Malala Yousafzai

Biography• Born on July 12th 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan• Father ran a school and was passionate about education for

everybody• Some people in Pakistan (the Taliban)believed that girls

shouldn’t be allowed to go to school• Malala campaigned against this – speeches and blogs• Taliban issued death threats against her and her family• On October 9th 2012, a Taliban gunman shot Malala in the

head whilst she was on her school bus• Malala moved to Birmingham, UK for urgent care• Continued to campaign for girls’ right to education• Won Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 (youngest ever)• Achieved A and A* grades in her GCSEs in 2015

How did Malala show humility?

Although Malala has been praised by very important and influential people (such as Barack Obama and the Pope), she always makes sure that it is her message about girls’ education that is most important. She doesn’t want to become a celebrity just to be famous.

She rightly shows pride in the achievements of her campaign so far but is also humble in the way she speaks to others.

What can we learn from Malala?

We can follow Malala’s example by thinking about what we can do to make the world a fairer place. Although we may not be putting ourselves in the same kind of danger, we may still need to make some sacrifices e.g. donating money, giving up our time, being brave and asking questions of important people.

We can also learn from her by being proud of our own achievements without showing off and by showing forgiveness as she does to her attackers.

Dear God,Thank you for Malala Yousafzai who has shown such courage and resilience as she campaigns for education for all. Thank you also for all of the medical staff who helped to save her life.Help us to follow Malala’s example by doing whatever we can to make our world a fairer and happier place.Help us to take pride in our hard work and achievements but keep us humble as we remember Jesus’s humility.May peace, love and hope flow through our school,Amen.
