Message from our Board Chair and our President & CEO

A successful hospital works in partnership with pa ents and families to deliver high quality care in a welcoming, respec ul environment. Your Humber River Hospital team works hard every day to do exactly that. As we look back at the past year, it is encouraging to note just how many successes there were, and how many pa ents and families took the me to say thank you for the excellent care they received.

We are pleased to off er a selec on of those stories inside this Report, as told by the pa ents themselves. These stories exemplify the dedica on and exper se demonstrated by your Humber River Hospital team throughout the past twelve months, and the response of grateful pa ents. They are representa ve of the thousands of other pa ents and families who passed through our doors in the last year.

Some of these pa ents benefi ted from the service enhancements we made in response to our community’s needs. The crea on of Humber River’s new Paediatric Neurology Outpa ent Clinic is an especially gra fying accomplishment from last year. We are now able to provide this important service close to home for some of our younger pa ents.

The opening of our new Interven onal Radiology Suite is another signifi cant achievement. State-of-the-art technology, in the hands of expert staff and physicians, allows delicate medical procedures to be performed, o en on an outpa ent basis for procedures that once meant admission to hospital for some pa ents.

These are illustra ve of the possibili es that our new hospital off ers for the future of acute care service delivery to our community. Our redevelopment project made tremendous progress last year and con nues to move ahead on schedule for a grand opening in the Fall of 2015. When fi nished, this new building will be a tremendous investment for the en re community.

Humber River Hospital will con nue to move its vision forward with determina on. We will con nue to focus on our role as a community builder; as teachers; and, most of all, your hospital will con nue to focus on delivering high quality care in a welcoming, respec ul environment. Pa ents are always our highest priority.

Vanessa Gale

Watch Vanessa’s story here:www.hrh.ca/vanessa

For Vanessa Gale, weighing almost 300 pounds, and suff ering from high blood pressure, acid refl ux, sleep apnea and low energy, even walking was a challenge. Since being referred to our Bariatric Surgery Program, Vanessa has an exci ng new career and a new lease on life.

Recognized as a ‘model’ for other hospitals across Canada to follow, the Program is home to Ontario’s fi rst Bariatric Centre of Excellence.

To say that Vanessa has become a ‘model’ pa ent for the Program is an understatement.

Page 5: Humber River Hospital 2012-2013 Community Report

This past year saw a major enhancement to our Diagnos c Imaging Program, with the opening of our new Interven onal Radiology (IR) Suite. We are just the second hospital in North America to feature the latest IR technology from PHILIPS, enabling us to off er even more advanced interven onal radiology procedures to our pa ents.

Among the highlights: in-room, high speed 3-D image processing, allowing the physician to navigate vascular structures anywhere in the body; and a ‘clot bus ng’ device for minimally-invasive removal of blockages in arteries and veins. As an added feature, the new system has the ability to ‘pull’ historical images into the ‘live’ procedure to assist in complex or cri cal interven ons.See the I.R. Suite in ac on:

As one of Ontario’s largest acute care hospitals, with a culturally and socially diverse pa ent popula on, Humber is uniquely posi oned to be at the forefront of training the next genera on of physicians. And with our new hospital facility shi ing the thinking about hospital design and processes, that role is taking on even more importance.

As Dr. Ray Mar n, Humber’s Vice President of Medical and Academic Aff airs explains, our affi lia on with the University of Toronto, partnerships with over 40 other learning ins tu ons and the extraordinary level of teaching provided by our medical staff prove that this is a role Humber embraces with enthusiasm.

Sean MacArthurSean MacArthur

See how Sean turned his life around:www.hrh.ca/sean

Humber River’s Bridgeway Chemical Dependency Program has a long history of success, helping mental health and addic ons pa ents and their families in the community and beyond.

Sean MacArthur says the Bridgeway Program and the tremendous care and support from HRH staff , physicians and volunteers saved his life. For care givers there is no higher compliment.

A er a lengthy ba le with substance abuse and alcohol, Sean is savouring his 16 months (and coun ng) of sobriety and engaging in a unique ‘con nuing educa on’ program that is changing his life – for the be er.

Norman Kleinberg

Norman shares his story here:www.hrh.ca/norman

Con nuity of high quality, comfortable care is very important to Norman Kleinberg, especially as he has required a number of vascular surgeries over the years. Taking charge of Norman’s care is the specialized team in Humber River’s Vascular Surgery Program. The staff and physicians bring excep onal surgical care to our community: at a level of quality and exper se that has been remarked upon by physicians at the world famous Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

In Norman Kleinberg’s long-term rela onship with Humber River, he praises the Program for giving pa ents like him the trust, confi dence and reassurance to cope with the reali es of illness and the stress of repeated surgeries.

Peers Fostering Hope is an amazing example of the crucial role our volunteers play at Humber River Hospital. Most pa ents and visitors see volunteers in their more familiar roles as greeters at the informa on desk, or raising funds for hospital programs. At Humber they do so much more - working across more than 50 programs and services to help

keep our hospital running smoothly.

O en it is their own life experiences that help make that special connec on between pa ent and volunteer. Perhaps nowhere else in our hospital is that connec on more profound than when they are Peers Fostering Hope.

Pu ng the care in caring starts with bringing both the pa ent and family into the care process as ac ve par cipants. At Humber our eff orts in nurturing the rela onship between pa ent, family and care providers are guided by our Pa ent Centred Care Leader Dawn Sidenberg.

Establishing an open and respec ul rela onship on all sides is key to ensuring that the highest possible quality of care is delivered to our pa ents, and that family members feel included throughout.

As Dawn points out, there are roles for all sides - staff , physicians, pa ent and family - to play in ensuring the right mix of communica on and compassion in the ideal pa ent-centred experience.

Trillium Gift of Life

Honouring the wishes of pa ents and families is at the forefront of delivering care at Humber River Hospital. Part of ensuring those wishes are carried out with empathy and confi den ality lies in our ability to foster a close rela onship with our community partners like the Trillium Gi of Life Network.

In fact, with the dedica on and collabora on of our medical and surgical teams, Humber River is proud of how our staff and physicians are helping to facilitate organ dona on with integrity and compassion.

At fi rst, Elissa Roberts thought her vivacious fi ve-year-old son Kymoni was just playing, but then she realized that he wasn’t responding. He was having an epilep c seizure. Her search for help eventually took her to the Paediatric Neurology Outpa ent Clinic at Humber River.

Since that day, Kymoni has shown remarkable improvement, and Elissa credits the Clinic’s staff and physicians for giving her the hope she needs, and the tools she requires, to manage the illness. With each visit, Kymoni con nues to delight and inspire his care team.

Managed Equipment Services

In October of 2012, Humber River Hospital and GE Healthcare announced an innova ve fi een-year agreement that will see them implement the fi rst Managed Equipment Services (MES) solu on for hospitals in North America.

The MES agreement ensures that Humber River is always at the leading edge of technology in many cri cal areas by providing a strategic approach to the ongoing acquisi on, replacement and maintenance of hospital technology. It covers approximately 1,320 pieces of essen al medical equipment in a wide array of programs: surgery; cardiac care; diagnos c imaging and more.

“Pa ents will benefi t from the latest technology to assist in both diagnosis and treatment,” explains Rueben Devlin, Humber River Hospital President & CEO. “Physicians will receive results faster, reducing wait mes. The cost savings from an MES model compared to the tradi onal RFP approach for capital equipment purchases will be re-invested in pa ent care programs.

In a period of economic instability, hospitals must look for new and innova ve approaches to ensure the sustainability of their technology assets. Our partnership with GE Healthcare does that.”

Dr. Laura Copeland

With online access to their en re medical record anywhere an internet connec on is available, pa ents in the new Humber River Hospital will have at their fi nger ps all of their care informa on: test results, physician notes, medica on record etc. For pa ents it’s an empowering applica on - for most physicians a paradigm shi in prac ce processes.

As Director of Medical Informa cs at Humber, Dr. Laura Copeland guided the work we did last year in prepara on for introducing the EMR at our new hospital. This included work on the Electronic Pa ent Discharge Summary, and work on organizing and designing the Problem List Module component of the EMR.

Apotex Pledges $10 Million

Team Revolution Conquers Granfondo Italia 2012

Apotex Inc. understands just how important it is to invest in the health and vitality of our community. The largest Canadian owned pharmaceu cal company, Apotex has been commi ed to our hospital for over 30 years.

They have generously pledged $10,000,000 in support of our new hospital. Apotex’s transforma onal gi will be recognized by the crea on of the Apotex Emergency Centre.

“This hospital is very important to Apotex – we have had a long associa on with HRH and many of our employees have benefi ed from the care provided at the hospital. There is a very personal connec on to Humber for me – both of my sons were born there,” explains Jack Kay, CEO of Apotex.

Team Revolu on, one hundred GTA cycling enthusiasts, has pledged $1 million for the NEW Humber River Hospital. In recogni on of their support, the new hospital’s community piazza will be named in their honour.

Last summer Team Revolu on kicked off their fundraising eff orts by riding in the 2012 Granfondo Italia in Carpi, Italy. The largest non-Italian team par cipa ng, they rode through 130km of breath-taking Italian countryside to reach the fi nish line with over $425,000 raised towards their goal.

The team gathered at the construc on site of the new Humber River Hospital this past Spring to look back at their Italy experience and to take a tour of the new hospital site.

They also took some me to review their training plans and riding routes for the 2013 cycling season. With this summer dedicated to preparing for another trip to Italy for the 2014 Italian Granfondo, Team Revolu on is already looking ahead to next summer.

Building Humber

North York Lions Club Invests $100,000 in Humber’s Future

“I’m helping to build the new Humber.”Maryam Naweed

Clinical Prac ce Leader,Mental Health/Addic ons Program

Humber is important to me because of its diversity and mul culturalism. I love working at Humber River Hospital because you make me feel like I belong. I donate because Humber makes me feel welcome, accepted, and included.

Kindness abounds in our hospital and every day I am reminded of these wise words: “Kindness in words creates confi dence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love” LAO-TZU (c.4th century BC). With that being said, it’s through kindness that we can make a diff erence in our lives and others around us.

Thanks to the generosity of the North York Central Lions Club and their $100,000 dona on to the new Humber River Hospital, the Eye Care Room in the Emergency Department will be named in their honour.

“When it came me to talk as a group about our charitable giving, the conversa on naturally turned to Humber River,” states Stan Simmons, President of the North York Central Lions Club. “This is our hospital, many of our members and their families have benefi ted from Humber’s talented doctors and nurses, and we will all be posi vely impacted by the new hospital.”

This deep-rooted sense of community and civic duty underlies the mission of the Lions Club worldwide. With over 1.35 million members in 207

countries, the members of this dedicated community group share a core belief: community is what we make it. Our local Lions each have their own personal reasons for wan ng to make this corner of the world a be er place. For many that involves suppor ng the redevelopment of our hospital.

Page 18: Humber River Hospital 2012-2013 Community Report

Our hospital lost a cherished friend last June when Dr. William (Bill) Francis passed away. Dr. Francis was appointed Chief of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at York-Finch General Hospital in October of 1969, leading the organiza on of the Department prior to the hospital opening in 1971. He served as Chief of the Department for many years, and also as Chief of Staff .

While recognized as an excellent clinician, Bill was also renowned for his wit and sense of humour. So much of the world around him he considered ‘awesome’: hence his nickname of Dr. Awesome. The Founda on’s Awesome Golf Tournament comes by its name honestly: it was started by Dr. Francis as a way to raise funds for his hospital. To be presented with the Tournament’s pink jacket - a tradi on started by Bill - is a singular honour.

In his October 8th le er accep ng his appointment in 1969, Bill wrote that “I expect our hospital to provide unsurpassed service to the community, with a dis nct view of the future.” A er all these years, this remains our highest priority.

Dr. Bill Francis

Ralph Waldo Emerson reminded us that the purpose of life is to “be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some diff erence that you have lived and lived well.” It’s a very fi ng descrip on of Norma Stenhouse.

A loyal friend, with more than half a century of service as a volunteer, we lost Norma last August. From her fi rst days on the Ladies Auxiliary and for the next 51 years, our hospital was always grateful that Norma was part of the Humber family. Norma served in many leadership roles with the Volunteer Associa on and the Hospital’s Founda on. Our longest-serving volunteer ever, Norma was the very fi rst Life Governor named by our Volunteer Associa on.

Humber River is honoured that so much of Norma’s life was shared with us – her legacy with our hospital is an incredible example of community service.

Volunteers

For more than 60 years our Volunteers have exemplifi ed the very spirit of community caring and service.

Whether helping pa ents fi nd their way; comfor ng worried family members; assis ng on inpa ent units; or raising money for hospital projects and equipment: they are an irreplaceable part of the Humber family.

Last year The Humber Hospital Volunteer Associa on announced their latest contribu on to our hospital: $700,000 to help pay for the new Interven onal Radiology Suite that has been installed at the Church site.

Only the second hospital in North America to install this type of system, this state-of-the-art equipment will be relocated to the new hospital site in 2015.

Members of the Humber River Hospital Volunteer Associa on gathered in September to catch up a er the summer break and to look ahead at their ac vi es for the upcoming year.

Shante Smith has been overcoming challenges her whole life. At 29 years old, she lives with a severe disability and needs dialysis to stay alive. Each day is a struggle for Shante, but one she faces with courage and an infec ous smile.

Now, thanks to the love and support of her mother Norma, and the exper se of Humber River’s renowned Home Dialysis Program, life is a li le easier for Shante and her mother.

Their story is an inspira on to all of the staff and physicians involved in our Home Dialysis Program, and to anyone who sees it.

ARTZ

Ozone Cleaning System

In February, we became one of the fi rst hospitals in Canada to begin using the “ARTZ”. It’s a steriliza on device that emits uniform UVC light to surfaces and air in pa ent care areas, delivering in minutes the dose needed to kill a number of bacteria, including MRSA, VRE and C. diffi cile. Pa ent safety is always top of mind at Humber - the ARTZ is another way we are working to eliminate hospital-acquired infec ons.

Our Environmental Services Team has implemented an extra step in their cleaning processes for pa ent rooms, hallways and public areas. The Ozone and Sustainable Cleaning System works by electrically charging tap water to create a powerful, chemical-free cleaning solu on that eff ec vely disinfects and destroys fungi, mold, allergens and bacteria.

While this new ini a ve helps make our hospital safer for pa ents, families and hospital team members, the Environmental Services Team is proud to report that this ‘green friendly’ ini a ve is also cu ng down on packaging and reducing chemical use in our cleaning prac ces at our three exis ng hospital facili es.

Last summer our Hospital became 100 % Smoke Free: smoking is no longer permi ed anywhere on Humber River property at all three sites, including entrances, exits and parking lots.

As a leading provider of care, Humber River is commi ed to improving the health and well-being of our staff , physicians, volunteers, pa ents and visitors.
