Bridgepoint Active HealthcareAuthor: Megan Suddergaard

Synopsis: Susan Himel was the Coordinator for the hospital-wide Livewell! strategy at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, a hospital located in urban Toronto. In the fall of 2012, the Vice President of her department told her that the Redevelopment Steering Committee was very interested in implementing an organizational policy to prohibit smoking on the entire hospital property with the planned opening of the new, state-of-the-art building. She got an urgent call from her Director to be the lead on the development of this possible organizational policy, with a first task of collaborating with her Director to provide a briefing report to be presented at the next Senior Leadership Meeting, which was in a few weeks’ time. This report would assist their Vice-President to bring the Smoke Free Bridgepoint proposal to the Executive Team so they could decide whether or not to move forward with the policy. Susan recognized the multiple considerations required when implementing a settings-based health promotion initiative, and she wondered: what were the opportunities and barriers that she would need to present to the Executive Team so that they could make an informed decision?
