Course Description

Human Services 100 is an introduction to the world of service professions and development of an

empathetic way of thinking. Through the broad range of topics, each week we will focus on a different

lens to understand and serve the world’s population. Through reflection, experiential learning, and group

discussion, this course is designed to create a rich learning experience focused on care and awareness.

2.} Prepare and present a well-researched and thoughtful group presentation to the class about a social

justice issue, while hearing and reflecting on their classmate’s presentations.

3.} Reflect on the many topics discussed in class such as homeless, living with differing abilities,

addiction, and HIV/AIDS.

4.} Integrate the most meaningful and useful tools learned into each individual student’s personal

vocational goals as well as their style of learning.

4.} Identify the benefits of living in a multicultural, pluralistic society.

5.} Demonstrate basic counseling skills.

7.} List the most important and crucial aspects of the Human Services field.

*If you identify with a cultural, ethnic, or religious background and there is a holiday or tradition you

would like to celebrate, please let me know! I would love to celebrate together as a class!

Required Texts

*A copy of this book is on reserve for use within the library!

2.} Additional articles will be posted on Sakai for recommended reading. These will be current issues,

case studies, and personal stories of individuals related to the topic of the week! I encourage you all to

read them or save them for future reference!

Accommodations

If there is a need for an accommodation, please speak with, e-mail, or visit me in my office to let me

know what reasonable accommodations I can provide for this course! Please bring the letter from the

Accessibility Services Office with you! It is incredibly important to me to use multimodal learning and

accommodating, so please come see me to assure your needs are being met and a rich learning experience

can take place.

*For accommodations on any assignment, please see me!

I will gladly modify the assignment ahead of time, and take your considerations to heart for future

Assignment Descriptions

1.} Experiential Learning Reflections…5 Points Each/15 Points Total

Human Services is an experiential field. Throughout the semester, you will have three

opportunities to do service learning or shadowing within the vocational areas of Human Services.

We will do three different types of journals, to focus your reflection and also to highlight the

different journaling techniques for your use in the future! The three journaling techniques we

will use are: active listening, critical incident, and unstructured.

At three different placement sites, you can do 3 hours of service and write a reflection tying in

the readings, class activities, and presenters.

You may do the experiential learning any time during the semester, but the reflections must

be uploaded to Sakai by the dates in the syllabus.

If there are scheduling conflicts with your sites and your service/reflections cannot be uploaded

by these times, just let me know and we can figure out a specialized plan for you!

2.} Counseling Recording…20 Points

Within Human Services or truly any profession, counseling skills are essential!

With a partner (which I will assign in advance), record ten minute sessions where you are the

counselor! That means Katerina is counselor for ten minutes and Sasha is the client, and then in a

new recording for ten minutes, Sasha is the counselor and Katerina is the client.

This may be turned in to me on Sakai. (If both recordings are in one file, that is fine! Just put a

note in the comments section to assure that each student receives a grade!)

A one page reflection sheet of your experience will be submitted on Sakai!

3.} Midterm Exam…15 Points

Page 4: Human Services Syllabus

HMS 100 Syllabus Spring 2016 4

As much as I dislike tests, I feel as though this is a way for me to see how well you have learned

the material from the book, class time, and within the synthesis of your life.

This is a way for me to make sure you are doing the reading, where our learning is as a class, and

what needs to be reviewed!

4.} Social Justice Presentation…15 Points

In groups of 3, the class will be divided up (by me) into groups to discuss social justice issues

with the entire class.

Based on the notes you take and learn from these presentations, a facilitation will take place the

next class period.

All groups must meet with me to discuss their social justice issue and ideas before they

present!

Your peers will be filling out evaluation sheets for you!

5.} Final Personal/Vocational Reflection…15 Points

I do not think that after this class every one of you will become Human Services majors! This

assignment is the final synthesis, after everything you’ve learned since day one in our class.

Looking ahead, what are your vocational goals? What are some personal goals? How has this

class guided your future path?

Please include five out of the ten top human services aspects to analyze for your goals.

This assignment may be a paper or creative assignment!

Please present your ideas to me through e-mail, in my office, or after class!

6.} Learning Portfolio…10 Points

This assignment is a crucial part of your experience as a learner! (Which I hope is the rest of

your life!) Understanding how you learn and making a commitment to learning in the future is

truly significant!

This assignment can be creative!

Please present your idea to me through e-mail or in my office!

7.} Attendance…5 Points

Look at the syllabus’ section on attendance for a full description.

For snow day forums, your thoughtful reflections will count towards that day’s attendance!

For snow days, there may be additional assignments, so please be vigilant in reading instructions

on the forum/e-mails!

8.} Participation…5 Points

Participation is an essential part of this course. Some are external processors, who like to talk

things out, and some are internal processors, making meaning of the topics inwardly. We must

respect everyone’s style of learning. However, there are some class days which serious

discussions will be happening in class, and if you do not feel comfortable participating, please let

me know in advance and I can grade you in another fashion.

You will submit the grade you think you think you should receive for participation with a short

explanation of why you feel this way!

9.} Mid-Semester Check-In…+5 on Any Assignment

Page 5: Human Services Syllabus

HMS 100 Syllabus Spring 2016 5

This is truly just for me to know what is working well for you, what I can do better, and how the

class is going for you.

I hope each one of you will participate!

10.} Final Semester Check-In…+5 on Any Assignment

Similar to the other check-in, I hope to continually improve the course for future students and I

am truly thankful for your feedback! I value your opinion, so please turn this in!

11.} Thank You Card…+5 on Any Assignment

We will be fortunate enough to hear from some incredible professionals in various fields this

semester! If you desire to write one of the thank you cards for one of our many presenters, you

will receive extra credit! Make sure you check-in with me before you write the message, it needs

to be thoughtful and thankful!!

12.} Final Grade…Entire Grade

At the end of the semester, the two of us will meet and discuss your points and what grade you

think you should receive based on your own evaluation of your learning!

{ S O M E L O G I S T I C S … }

Attendance Policy

Three or more unexcused absences from class will present a need for you to have a meeting with me and

talk about why you are not coming to class. This is a case-by-case basis, but as always, please be in

contact with me about your needs. I am accommodating, but the university also has certain rules

regarding attendance.

Snow Day Policy

Even if the university does not cancel class, I will most likely cancel if the public schools cancel. I do

this for those students who commute to school and have a longer distance to travel which may result in

unsafe traveling conditions. On those days, I will e-mail the class the night before or morning of canceled

class to inform you of the forum to post your reflections of the reading. They are graded, so make sure

you are thorough and thoughtful please! There also may be additional homework for the following

week, so make sure to read the instructions!

Academic Honesty

As a student at this university, the academic honesty rules apply to you. If there is a case, the dean will be

involved. If you need an extension or guidance, please let me know! This is a very serious issue and I

Page 6: Human Services Syllabus

HMS 100 Syllabus Spring 2016 6

rather have you turn in a late assignment than feel as though you need to plagiarize. Please e-mail me

with enough time to discuss your particular issue.

*LAPTOPS! I completely understand the need to take notes on a laptop. It is quick and efficient.

However, by bringing your laptop you are making a commitment to only take notes, not go on Facebook

or Pinterest or check your e-mail! Please take this responsibility seriously!

Tutoring Center

I encourage you to take advantage of the Tutoring Center! They are a wonderful staff and the three

Human Services tutors are there to aid with understanding the material, talking about the deep topics we

cover, helping with your learning portfolios, or anything else! Call (415)265-4440 to make an

appointment, e-mail [email protected], or walk in!

Course Fulfillment

This class fulfills the first or second Humanities requirement. It also begins the wonderful journey of

simply learning about Human Services or the start of a major or minor!!

Service Saturdays

This is an idea I have been hoping to implement since I dreamed of becoming a professor! On Saturdays

or Sundays, if you do service and write a reflection about your experience, you can receive extra credit!

The points given will be determined in class. Also, I may ask you to share your experience if you feel

comfortable with that! In this co-learning environment, we can learn together from one another’s

experiences. I hope you all chose to participate in service with an organization you feel called to work

with! (For example, this could be your place of worship, a nonprofit you enjoy, etc.)

Additional Information

{ About Professor Reilly! }

About me…I am from the Boston area and went to college in Worcester, Massachusetts at

Assumption College! I majored in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies! I then moved to

Chicago, Illinois to study for a master’s in Higher Education. Loving people from all over the

Page 12: Human Services Syllabus

HMS 100 Syllabus Spring 2016 12

United States, I decided to move to Seattle, Washington to work for Renew, Rebuild, an

incredible nonprofit organization which works to end homelessness. Next stop, San Marcos,

California to work at an Orthodox College in disability and teaching and learning. Finally, I am

here! I love the work I do, and would love to get to know you! I love to learn bike riding,

skiing, fashion, singing, and food! What do you enjoy?

Teaching Philosophy…I truly believe in a rich learning experience within your time in the

course! I base my teaching off of significant learning experiences within Lee D. Fink’s book! If

you are interested in course or program development, I encourage you to use this resource! I

have a personal copy in my office if you would ever like to browse! During this class, small

group work, stations, presenters, experiential learning are used to highlight different ways of

learning for students. I hope you enjoy the class, and if there is another method you would like

to implement in our class, please let me know!!

A Final Note

If any questions, comments, or concerns arise during our semester, please do not hesitate to

contact me so we can make sure to have the best semester possible!

Let’s have a great semester everyone!
