Human capital is the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of individuals that have
economic value to an organization. Human capital is intangible and cannot be managed the way
organizations manage jobs, products, and technologies. One reason why is because employees
own their human capital. If a valued employee leaves a company, they take their human capital
with them and the investment from training and money the company put into them is lost.
(Bohlander & Snell, 2010)
To have a high performing human capital in an organization, managers must continue to
develop superior knowledge skills, and experience within their workforce and retain and promote
top performers. They must recognize the knowledge that each employee holds and find a better
way to utilize it. By providing resources for employee development, each employee has the
option to better themselves and be one of the high performing employees that is looked at upon
promotions.
At my current organization, education is top priority. There are several trainings always
occurring throughout the year to for employee improvement. USAA also pays for a college
degree or certificate while in an approved school with an approved degree program. Each day I
learn something new just by working there. They provide the means to be a high performing
employee and person.
There are several different business trends today. One is being the employers ability to
meet employeesexpectations. Annual surveys explore employees true feelings anonymously
so that an action plan can be enforced to better the workplace. USAA does an annual survey

consisting of around 23 questions asking employees about various aspects of the company. Each
person is assigned a team upon getting hired and with this annual survey, the results are
compiled and submitted per team and then an action plan is created to better the workplace
environment. The results are completely anonymous so that the managers wont know who said
the good and the bad. It is becoming quite normal to see business care more and more about
their employees. More education benefits are being given and more annual employee surveys
are being taken seriously. Companies want to have a high capital company and are willing to
spend the money to get there. (Nolan, 2011)
