CUSB at a Glance

“….to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to make special provisions for integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, and technology in its educational programmes; to take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning process and inter-disciplinary studies and research; to educate and train manpower for the development of the country; to establish linkages with industries for the promotion of science and technology and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people, their intellectual, academic and cultural development”… with the above objective as its guiding principle, the Central University of South Bihar was established by the Government of India under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (section 25 of 2009). Central University of South Bihar is currently located at Patna, in the premises of Birla Institute of Technology (BIT Campus, PO: BV College, Patna – 800014) and is most likely to be located at Panchanpur, nearly 10 km from Gaya. The University became functional in 2009 with Prof. Janak Pandey as the first Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Mohammad Nehal as the first Registrar and launched a two year Master of Arts program in Development Studies (Centre of Development Studies) under the School of Social Sciences and Policy. In an effort for catering to the current scientific and social needs of the society, the University offers eighteen post graduate programmes, four integrated under graduate programmes and Six Intigrated M.Phil.-Ph.D programmes under the Schools of Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences; Human Sciences, Languages and Literature; Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science; Media, arts and Aesthetics; Social Sciences and Policy; Education; Law and Governance. The University aims at promoting academic concern among the youth by providing them societal and professional knowledge and to inspire them to become virtuous and responsible citizens of the country.

ICHIB-2016 will encourage the exchange of scientific information on cutting edge research and innovations in the field of biotechnology and its interdisciplinary relevance among active researchers. This conference is an attempt to bring the Industry and Academia together with a view of drawing attention towards the emerging future of Science and Technology in Bihar. We aim at providing a common platform for ‘Biotechnology based industries’ to address the lesser exposed Eastern India region, Bihar in particular and bring their latest technology and commodities to their knowledge and experience.

About Centre for Biological Sciences (CBS)

The Centre for Biological Sciences (CBS) is currently offering three different Masters level Programmes - M. Sc. Life Science, M. Sc. Biotechnology and M. Sc. Bioinformatics. In recent years, M.Phil.-Ph.D programmes have also been introduced. These Programmes include well-designed theory and practical courses. Innovation-based training is the key to train students with a special emphasis on understanding the basic as well as modern concepts in biological processes for pursuing research in frontier areas of Biological Sciences. Each of these three Programmes equip students with deep theoretical as well as practical understanding of different aspects of Biological processes and promote them to take on an integrative approach for their studies and research.

The discipline of Life Science covers several areas of Biological Sciences including Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Environmental Science related to “Life in Diversity”. It has a good balance of animal and plant sciences which broaden the students knowledge and capabilities and they have diverse options to choose for their future studies and research. Vaccine, various drugs, high yielding and stress tolerant varieties of crops and easily available clinical tests are few examples of impact of life sciences on the society. This Programme promises to enable the students for innovative solutions to fundamental challenges related to medicine, food, agriculture and environment.

Biotechnology has emerged as a major thrust in the field of science and technology having potential to boost the economy of several countries including India. The voice of global Biotechnology in 21st century is to transfer the bio-based technology from “Lab to Land and from Bench to Business” to bring the cost of bio-based commodities within the reach of common man. The courses in Biotechnology Programme are mainly related to recent and emerging trends in Biology but the students are also taught Biostatistics which enables them to analyse their data, draw meaningful conclusions and publish in reputed journals. The Programme equally gives emphasis on integrated approaches in human health, recombinant DNA technology, transgenic development, bioremediation and informatics. Students work directly with faculty on real-world projects, gaining hands-on skills necessary to solve emerging problems.

The post-genomic era has seen Biology grow from a 'soft' discipline to a 'hard' one. This has initiated a scientific revolution driven by Genomics and Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing field of study that centers around at the interface of Biology and Information Technology. The Bioinformatics Programme consists of a good amalgamation of courses like Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics and Physics. The students are trained for both dry and wet-lab techniques enabling them to better suit for different research laboratories and industries which look for personnel well-taught in programming languages, can do molecular modelling and also have abilities to work on bench producing raw data to analyse further using various Bioinformatics tools.

Centre for Biological Sciences is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment that provide a stimulating environment for teaching and research.

On behalf of organizing committees of ICHIB‐2016, we extend a warm welcome to all our respectablespeakers and all the delegates of this Conference. With the help of international, national, local andorganizing committee we are delighted to host such a meaningful conference. The presence of severalhigh profile dignitaries at this conference from USA, UK, KSA and different parts of India from variousfield of expertize indicates the success of this conference. They have been kind and generous in acceptingour invitation to be part of this conference organized for the first time by Centre for Biological Sciences,Central University of South Bihar, as an emerging educational hub in the Eastern part of India providing aunique opportunity to young minds towards high quality research. This conference is an attempt to bring the Industry and Academia together with a view of drawingattention towards the emerging outcomes of Biotechnology for human welfare. This conference will helpto understand the role of Biotechnology in Human welfare and focuses on emerging fields in the areas ofClinical Diagnostics, Drug Discovery, Design & Delivery, Stem Cell Technology, Gene Therapy, Stress,Biology, Neurobiology, Crop Improvement, Immuno‐Biology, Nano‐Biotechnology and Omics Technology. The stage is set for attendees and industry professionals alike to make meaningful connections andcollaborations during the conference. This conference is bringing the top scientists from India and abroadon one platform. I am sure there will be numerous opportunities for faculty, researchers, and students togain new knowledge, share technical and clinical experiences, networking, and communicate withindustry partners. There will be opportunity for Young Scientist Award as well as many participants willget enough opportunities to share their research with eminent scientists through oral and posterpresentations. You all are requested to encourage them.On behalf of the entire Centre for Biological Sciences, organizing committee and on my personal behalf, Iwould like to extend my good wishes to all participants.
