HINDUSTAN UNILEVERS CSR ACTIVITIES

ASHA DAAN

HUL supports Asha Daan running in Mumbai by the Missionaries of Charity

(founded by the late Mother Teresa). Asha Daan is a home for abandoned,

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hulcsr-reportsec-f-1 7/13

handicapped children, the destitute and people affected by AIDS (HIV

positive). Asha Daan had been set up on a 72,500 square feet plot, in the

heart of the city leased by the company. HLL also bears the capital and

revenue expenses for maintenance, upkeep and security of the premises

ANKUR

Very similar to Asha Daan is Ankur in HUL's Doom Dooma Plantation in

Assam. A center for special education of handicapped children aged

between 5 and 15 years, it was opened in 1993. It received the Lawrie

Group World aware Award for Social Progress in 1999. It provides

educational, vocational and recreational activities to its 60 inmates (38 boys

and 22 girls). These physically and mentally challenged children are taught

skills such as cookery, painting, embroidery, bamboo crafts, weaving,

stitching, depending on their aptitudes to make them self-reliant. A few of

the children have been able to pursue normal education in regular schools

after obtaining rehabilitative support.

KAPPAGAM

'Kappagam' (means 'shelter'); a second center for special education of

mentally and physically challenged children was set up in HLL's plantations

in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in 1998. At present, Kappagam takes

care of seven boys and 10 girls. Apart from various rehabilitative inputs, the

center provides the children with physiotherapy and speech therapy

PROJECT SHAKTI

The objective of Project Shakti is to create income-generating capabilities

for underprivileged rural women by providing a sustainable micro

enterprise opportunity, and to improve rural living standards through

health and hygiene awareness. It has already been extended to over 5000

villages in 52 districts in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya

Pradesh. HLL's vision is to scale it up across the country by 2010, creating

8/6/2019 Hul_csr Report_sec f (1)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hulcsr-reportsec-f-1 8/13

about 11000 Shakti entrepreneurs, covering 100,000 villages. A typical

Shakti entrepreneur conducts business of around Rs.15, 000 per month,

which gives her an income in excess of Rs.1000 per month on a sustainable

basis. As most of these women are from below the poverty line, and live in

extremely small villages (less than 2000 population), this earning is verysignificant, and is almost double of their past household income. For most

of these families, Project Shakti is creating opportunities to live in

conditions of dignity, with real freedom from want. HUL is now in the

process of piloting 'i-Shakti' an IT-based rural information service that will

provide solutions to key rural needs in the areas of agriculture, education,

vocational training and health/hygiene in Nalgonda district of Andhra

Pradesh.

VINDYA VALLEY

In 2002, the company also took up a project in Madhya Pradesh, which will

impact the entire state's rural population. The mainstay of Madhya

Pradesh's economy is agriculture. Prosperity thus means increasing the

income of farmers and small town and village entrepreneurs engaged in

agro processing and cottage industries. This is where HUL is contributing its

expertise. It has helped the government create 'Vindhya Valley', an

umbrella brand for food products, and support software for its marketing,

manufacturing and distribution. The up gradation will generate higher sales

and higher returns for rural artisan communities, many of whom are

women. To impact even larger groups, HUL is helping the government set

up permanent handicraft fairs across top cities and towns of the state. The

government already operates about 15,000 fair price shops. But there are

villages still, which do not have access to such shops. Those villages have

been identified, and fair price shops will be put up, each with a cluster of

villages as a catchment area. They will be run by Self Help Groups (SHGs)

and cooperatives.

KHAMGAON

HLL is also developing a Rural Education Programme, which aims at using

audio-visual aids, like video cassettes and CDs. These tools enable teachers

to explain basic concepts in mathematics, like operation on numbers,

fractions, algebra and geometry, to primary school children in villages.

YASHODADHAM VILLAGE

HUL has reconstructed a village in the Bhachau Taluka of Gujarat's Kachch

district. The village, which has been named Yashodadham, was dedicated to

its 1100 residents in December 2002. The residents belong to Nani Chirai

village, which was completely wrecked by the devastating earthquake of

January 2001. Yashodadham, spread over 25 acres, comprises 289 homes.

HLL has also provided a school building, an exclusive playground for

children and a multi-purpose community center, including a crèche, health

center, and community room and village administration office. All the

structures are earthquake and cyclone-resistant.

INTEGRATED RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Integrated Rural Development (IRD) Programme in the backward district of

Etah in the state of Uttar Pradesh (North India) was started in 1976,

adjacent to the company's dairy operations. In 1976, the IRD Programmestarted with 30 villages. As of now, it has been extended to about 500

villages. The basic activity is rural development -- implementation of

programmes towards activities such as farmers training, health of villagers,

infrastructure development, improvement in productivity and health of

cattle in Etah. The project is now being undertaken jointly with Nutricia

India (which has acquired HLL's dairy operations) and for certain health

programmes, with government-run Primary Health Centers and through

autonomous bodies, known as Samitis.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Our Corporate Safety & Environment Protection Department ensures that

all emissions from our factories are within norms set by the respective

Pollution Control Boards. To tackle the liquid effluents, gaseous emissionsand solid wastes that are generated by our factories, we follow a three-

pronged Pollution Control Strategy.

PROCTOR AND GAMBLE

Companies like P&G are a force in the world. Market capitalization isgreater than the GDP of many countries, and they serve consumers in

more than 180 countries. With this stature comes both responsibility and

opportunity. Our responsibility is to be an ethical corporate citizenbut

our opportunity is something far greater, and is embodied in our Purpose.

COMPARISION WITH P&G CSR ACTIVITIES

CSR ACTIVITIES

At P&G, Social Responsibility stems from our Corporate PVP (Purpose,

Values, and Principles). Social Projects are in keeping with P&Gs credo of

Business with a Purpose. P&G has always demonstrated its commitment

to the community not just through the quality of its products and services,

but also through socially responsible initiatives for the community. We

believe in building the community in which we live and operate by

supporting its on-going development.

Our effort to live up to the credo Touching Lives, Improving Life

continued with Shiksha (education) a P&G initiated and led national

consumer program in partnership with leading Child Rights organization,

Child Rights and You (CRY). Shiksha seeks to support the education of

underprivileged children in India. Over the past three years, Shiksha has

made a difference to the lives of over 67,000 children through a

contribution of about Rs. 5 crores. Today, Shiksha enjoys the goodwill and

support of leading luminaries from diverse fields. Shiksha 2007 had the

proud distinction of being blessed with the best wishes of the former

President of India, Dr. AbdulKalam. Shiksha has come a long way. Today it

has evolved from a one company one NGO initiative to a national consumer

movement with 15 projects across 9 states in India making the lives of over

67,000 children a little better. To quote Mother Teresa, We may feel what

we are doing is only a drop in the ocean . . . but if that drop was not there,

the ocean would be less because of the missing drop.

CONNECTIONS WITH VARIOUS NON- PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS:

ABOUT CHILD RIGHTS AND YOU (CRY)

8/6/2019 Hul_csr Report_sec f (1)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/hulcsr-reportsec-f-1 12/13

Child Rights and You (CRY) is an Indian NGO that believes every child

regardless of gender, caste or economic status has the right to survival,

protection, development and participation thus a childhood. For the past

30 years, we have partnered over 200 grass-roots level organizations in

working with children, their parents and communities in over 6700 slumsand villages across 18 states, to make this a reality. Three decades of

working with and for children have taught us that change is possible

when we tackle the root causes that continue to keep the children of India

hungry, illiterate, exploited and abused. CRY believes that if we ALL simply

do what we individually can, we can together build a nation that keeps the

promises we made to our children.

ASHA NIKETAN

Asha Niketan works with persons with mental handicap. It has two

premises in Kolkata, housing 14 persons. Except for one, none of them have

any known family. In both the locations, workshops are run where along

with residential members, 23 mentally challenged day workers join in, five

days a week. Based on their intellectual and physical capacity, they

regularly perform such jobs as making different types of candles, batiks, tie-

and-dye, greeting cards, paper bags etc.

Responding to the needs of the people in the locality, a Day Care Centrewas opened in 1996. Today, 17 children, all from families below the poverty

line, come to the Day Care Centre. These children are looked after by

assistants trained as special educators and other assistants. Asha Niketan,

Kolkata has a band of 15 dedicated assistants and 7 regular associates.

ANUPAM KHER FOUNDATION

It works towards good quality education for children from less privileged

background with the aim of maximizing their opportunities in life. The

objective is use child centric methods of learning by keeping in perspective

the psychological needs of the child and the sociological background in

perspective.

TERI AND BHARATIYA AGRO INDUSTRIES FOUNDATION

HUL's Khamgaon factory is located in a dry and arid region of Maharashtra.

Around 12 years ago the factory started a pilot project on 'Watershed

Management' on a five hectare plot to prevent soil degradation and

conserve water. The efforts have resulted in the creation of a green belt,

which is now a veritable forest of about 6,300 trees.

The community at Parkhed has already constructed 47 percolation bunds,

1,600 trenches, 6,000 running meters of continuous contour trenching over

100 hectares and 5 permanent check dams. Around 350 families have

reaped a second crop this year which is only possible due to construction of

check dams. Total land under cultivation during second crop season is 470

acres.

T hank You! Hope we have done justice to this project.
