Corruption in AmericaThen and Now
Social Issue Twain Satirizes
He satirized the corruption in society during the Gilded Age
in his novel
Carpetbaggers from the North would come to the South and capitalize on the Southerner’s ignorance and make money
off of them
Examples of Corruption in Huck Finn
“I says to myself, shall I go to that doctor, private, and blow on these frauds? No-- that won’t do. He might tell who told him; then the king and the duke
would make it warm for me” (176)
This describes Huck being intimidated by the Carpetbaggers who stood for corruption
“ The duke says yes. Then there was a fine time. Everybody sings out, sold,
and rose up mad, and was a-going for that stage and them tragedies.” (152)
•This describes when the duke and dauphin rip the people off
Cont.
Cont.
“The duke and the king begun to lay out a plan for working them towns” (157)

people out of their money

hundred and sixty-five dollars in that three nights.” (153)

CORRUPTION IN SPORTS TODAY
NFL
NCAAB
NCAAF
NBA
Corruption in NFL
The league wants to increase the amount of regular season games to 18 to make more money
This would seriously increase the amount of injuries to players in the league
The league only cares about making money not player safety
Corruption in NBA
NBA ref Tim Donaghy was arrested for betting on NBA games
He says that the NBA routinely instructed its referees to alter the outcomes of its games. Or, to put it more simply the NBA is fixed
Corruption in NCAAB
Jim Calhoun, UCONN’s mens basketball coach, spent more than $6,000 in improper recruiting inducements
He had impermissible phone calls and text messages to prospective student-athletes.
Cam Newton was recruited by Miss. State and Auburn and Cam Newton’s father asked for $250,000 from Miss. State for Cam to play there, which is against the NCAA policy
Cam went on to play at Auburn and Miss. State complained about how Cecil Newton had asked for money and the NCAA confirmed it through an investigation
Corruption in NCAAF
The social issue of corruption within society never really improved because we can see it today in modern sports
The issue of corruption will never really be eradicated because people will always want money and that will cause corruption
