Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link.
As I’m writing this the sun is actually out, yes it still cold, but I can see blue sky, the nights
are getting lighter and it feels as though Spring may be just around the corner. With the
Easter holidays already upon us, lets hope that the weather now starts to take a turn for the
better.
As the weather starts to improve, this is the time of year when we start to venture outside
again and start working on the out door jobs that we have put off during the Winter months.
If it’s jobs for your garden that you need help with, we have
some great landscape gardeners and garden maintenance
companies on board who can help you bring your garden
back to life. See the index on page 30 for more details. If
you are unsure where to start this month, Garden Delight
write us an editorial full of monthly handy hints and tips for
your garden maintenance - have a read on page 21.
If it’s more property maintenance that you might require
help with, again we have a full list of companies that can
help you in this area in our index on page 30. Although
Dave Stevens also writes a little Handy Tips article each
month on DIY issues that you may need help with in your
home, you can read this months on page 12.
Finally if you are thinking of having a conservatory , now is
the ideal time in preparation for the Summer months, or if
your existing conservatory could do with some repair before
the Summer, I can recommend Taylors conservatories on
page 8.
Please remember, as always we can be found on our Face
book page; www.facebook.com/TheLinkDirectories or on
twitter; www.twitter.com/@Sarah_Gerken we would love to
connect with you.
Congratulations to Anthony Prewer for winning last months Sudoku competition, tickets to
Cineworld Gloucester will be on their way to you. Please feel free to email me your
Sudoku entries if you so wish: [email protected]
Have a great month
Sarah.

Dave’s top tips
Repairing a cracked path
Mending cracks in concrete paths, patios, drives, walls and floors has long been a problem.
New concrete in a crack is completely useless unless the crack can be widened into some-
thing that will allow a decent amount of concrete to be placed in it. Its no good trying to fill a
5mm crack with concrete comprised of 10mm aggregate!
Now however you can purchase a jointing compound suitable for drives, paths and patios
which will fill cracks from 5mm wide to 40mm wide and harden to a permanent finish which
can even be power washed.
This compound is an epoxy resin compound that sets harder than the concrete itself! Epoxy
resin pigments can be added if you have something a little more exotic than standard concrete
colors
Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with
some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills
Regards
Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.
Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee
however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works
yourself.

Everybody has a brain.
Thank goodness for that because without that brain you would be dead. Now the brain
connects to the body via wire-like structures called nerves. We chiropractors study the
way the nerves interact with the body, like your internal organs (heart, pancreas, liver) as
well as the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments.
We also know how the stresses of life can affect the clear transmission of information or
energy along those nerves, which can affect any organ of the body often without you
being aware of it. Don’t worry though because chiropractors are trained in the identifica-
tion and treatment of nerve interference. The result is a reduction of your pain or other
symptoms, and an improvement in your quality of life.
At the Chiropractic Wellness Centre you’ll be greeted by our CA’s (Chiropractic Assis-
tants) who are always friendly, and they will guide you through the simple procedures.
You’ll be gently assessed. Part of that assessment uses non invasive scanning technology
to measure subtle changes in your spine and nervous system which enables the doctor to
get a really good idea of what is going on in your body as a whole. After that we give you
a thorough report followed by recommendations for care moving forward. The care could
be relief/crisis care, Rehabilitative/Corrective Care or Maintenance Care.
We are completely dedicated to restoring health to each and every person who walks
through the door whether that means getting out of pain so you can look after the kids
better or improve your performance for sporting events.

Gardening Tips for April from Garden Delight..
Flowers, Tubs and Borders Prune back forsythia after flowering this will keep the plants compact and bushy; the new growth pro-
duced will be next years flowering wood.
Clematis – train and tidy the new growth this will give you a much better display of flowers.
Dead head any bulbs that have flowered e.g. Daffodils, do not cut the foliage off, the bulbs need this to
produce the food for the bulb to flower next year. You can top dress with a good general feed e.g. fish,
blood and bone or Vitax Q4
Plant Dahlias and Gladioli, when you buy them in the garden centre; be sure to check the corms and
tubers have not dried out in the heat of the garden centre.
Straggly grey foliage plants like Lavender, Santolina, Senecio and Grey Cineraria can be cut back now.
Do not cut into the brown old wood as this can kill the plant. Trimming over now will give your plants
the encouragement they need to produce fresh new shoots and give plenty of time for them to build up
flower for the summer.
Spray your roses with Bio Multi Rose which is combined bug and fungus killer it helps control black
spot and rust and kills pests but not beneficial insects. Spraying every couple of weeks will keep your
roses clean and healthy.
Fruit and Vegetables Finish planting out sprouting maincrop potatoes but keep an eye out for late frosts which might take the
new growing tips.
Plant out Cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussel Sprout plants
Cover a few Strawberry plants with cloche or fleece to give you an early crop. ( you can use polythene
but make sure the air can circulate
Greenhouse You can sow seeds for the tender pants which will go out in the ground at the end of nest month e.g.
Courgette, French and Runner Beans
Sow Basil from seed for planting out at the end of May, alternatively if you don’t have a greenhouse
you can sow and grow in pots on a warm window sill. Make successive sowings which will give you
fresh young plants through the summer
Lawns Start to lower the blades on your mowers as the grass grows quicker and thicker.
You can continue to use a weed, feed and moss killer on the lawn, you will off course get bare patches
where the weeds and moss have hopefully died... you can get a ‘patch’ pack of grass seed from the
garden centre to fill in the bare spots.
General Tips April is a good month to make a start on those difficult perennial weeds. Most weed killers work best in
warmer weather when the sap is rising in the plant. Do not apply on a wet or hot sunny day. A dry
overcast day is best this means the weed killer will have time to be absorbed into the leaves and get to
work. You might be tempted to cut down weeds before treatment e.g. nettles but all this really does is
reduce the surface area for absorbs ion. If the weeds are particularly tough or have a waxy surface you
can beat them with a stick or cane to bruise the foliage, this will help the weed killer get into the plant.
For borders and rough areas where you want to continue to grow plants a contact systemic killer is best
e.g. a glyphosate based product.. This will kill what it touches and travels through the sap system of the
plants but breaks down and biodegrades when it hits the soil. For paths and gravel drives you need a
weed killer which has a contact and residual ingredient in it e.g. Pathclear. .
What ever you use follow the instructions on the packet and remember to only use the recommended
dosage.

Hucclecote Scout Group
The Founders Day celebrations went well with over 100
parents, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers singing the
camp fire songs and doing their items. All units renewed
their Scouts law and promise before tucking into the food
which soon vanished.
Plans for May Day camp near Stroud have now been
made and details sent out, it is a long weekend and ideal for the new
Scouts and for the older Scouts to show what they know.
The activities for the summer camp at Newquay have now been booked
with a 150 foot zip wire from the cliffs being very popular. With the rat
run (crawling along tunnels) and the snakes and ladders climb up the cliffs
should be a good day out.
With the weather getting better (we hope) and the nights getting lighter we
have started outdoor activities for part of the evening. Cooking on open
fires is a lot more fun than inside on a gas stove inside.
Anyone interested in joining the group is welcome age from 6 to 18 boys
and girls please phone Terry on 521664 for more information.

Hucclecote Horticultural Society By the time you read this we will have had our AGM, with a new chairman
elected and some additional committee members ready to plan ahead for next year.
Our thanks go to the outgoing chairman Jan Broadway, who has done a sterling job
for the Society continuously as treasurer, programme secretary and lately as chair-
man since it was set up, several years ago. Thanks also to Alan Pedrick who in
February entertained and amused us with his hands on demonstration of propogation
by cutting. Quite a few of the myths we have learned from the tv experts were de-
molished during that evening. I await my Myrtle bushes with interest! We have
also had a few dry days, so hopefully these will have allowed me to complete my
Good Friday job, planting my potatoes. This year I have again gone for Sarpo Mira
– a good blight resistant variety – and the old favourites Wilja, which last year also
survived the blight. On April 25th we will be hosting Steve Head. Steve will be
showing us how we can help benefit the wildlife [though hopefully not the slugs] as
we go about our activities in the garden. We all love to see different or unusual
birds visiting, and we long for a sighting of a fox or a hedgehog, so this could be an
opportunity to find out how to increase our chances. 23rd May then sees a visit from
Duncan Coombs from Upton-on-Severn who will be talking to us about Lilies in the
garden – all being well covering both the ‘over and done with’ day lilies and those
huge and gorgeous scented lilies that we see in gardens that we visit.
All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with
refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not
restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.
St Philip and St James Church April Flowers
As we move into the warmer months there is an increase in the number of baptisms and
weddings in our church. Both are special events where commitments and vows are made
before God, with families and friends present. They are happy and meaningful occasions
and it’s a pleasure to see them take place. Some of us may be looking forward to the
wedding of a friend or family member this year, or even their own! Some may be looking
forward to celebrating a special wedding anniversary and we have several of our ‘Flower
Ladies’ who were married 50 years ago this year.
We are blessed with a great team of Flower Ladies who do amazing flower displays in
church each week. On the 4th, 5th and 6th May they are taking over the whole church for
their ‘Gowns and Garlands’ exhibition, featuring wedding dresses through the years with
flowers. The church will be open from 11am to 5pm each day and monies raised will be
given to the James Hopkins Trust and The Butterfly Garden. During this weekend our
normal Sunday services will take place at 8:45am and 10:30am in the Church Centre.
You are very welcome to join us as well as visiting the exhibition.
At the beginning of April we will welcome back our much missed vicar, Revd Andrew
Axon, who has been on sabbatical!

Hucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen GuildHucclecote Townswomen Guild For a short time, at the February meeting of Hucclecote Townswomens Guild, members were disappointed as ‘Boots the Chemist’ were not able to ‘field their speaker’, on Boots No 7 Cosmetics, as advertised, but they listened with renewed interest, and apprecia-tion, as Carol Lee a member of Saintbridge Guild, spoke to us of her holiday in 2009 cruis-ing down the River Amazon and on to several of the Caribbean islands before returning home. Carol illustrated the talk with a slide show, starting with pictures at Maneus, which is a town built by the British 400 miles inland on the River Amazon!.After visiting the Opera House in Maneus-(the road outside, has a layer of rubber over it to deaden the noise of the traffic, so as not to disturb the performances!), the large market there, and a festival and show with music and dancing, all the dancers being dressed in vibrant, bright colours, the cruise got under way, and looking at the pictures of the river cruising, it is easy to imagine you’re cruising the ocean, as the river is so wide, and fast flowing, though a muddy col-our.Trips to the quieter resorts, and Rain Forest(many pictures of exotic insects here!) were by ships tender seeing the large water buffalo, egrets, etc. on the way. Leaving the river, on into the Caribbean, firstly stopping at Scarborough-( capital of Tobago), and trips to the large fish market and botanical gardens there,- St Lucia searching for dolphins and whales-St Kitts to see the mountains- Catalina Island and finally Montego bay in Jamaica, complet-ing a myriad of sights sounds and experiences on a very memorable holiday. Thank you
Carol. The April meeting of HTG, will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre, on Thursday 18th April, at 7-30 pm, and will be the first of our new programme- all members and visitors are welcome to attend.
Hearts & Hurricanes WI
Hearts & Hurricanes WI celebrated its first birthday in March with a beautiful birthday cake
made by Helen Beesley and a glass or two of bubbles. It has been a challenging but, most of
all, a fun year filled with chocolate, cheese, cake, crafts, walks, gardening, beer and mince pies
–not to mention a glass or two of wine when the occasion demanded!
The year ahead will be even busier with more members and an even more exciting line-up. We
have an intro to yoga, ceramic jewellery making, self defence, and gardening to mention a few
of the highlights. We also have family pet evening in August and wine tasting in October with
friends and partners (men are invited!)
At our next meeting on Wednesday 10 April, our Coopers Edge resident horticulturist, David
Bentley, will be giving a talk on 'Selecting the right plants for your garden'.
New members are more than welcome at this newly established WI. We
meet on the second Wednesday of every month at Coopers Edge School at
7:30pm. Entry is free for members and £3 for non-members.
