Hydrex™ Synthetic Magnesium Silicate Hydrex® products are a class of synthetic magnesium-aluminum silicates which are suitable for both acid and alkaline paper making. Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicate has a medium particle size, high brightness and high oil absorption characteristics. Available in both dry and slurry (30% solids) forms, Hydrex silicates offer unique structures which optimize light scattering properties in paper and coating applications. This results in superior optical and physical properties in the resulting paper product including: improved brightness, opacity, printability, bulk and enhanced friction control.

Huber Silicates for Paper. Product Properties, Grades, and End Use Benefits

Zeolex® Synthetic Aluminosilicate Zeolex® synthetic aluminosilicate products are excellent performers for TiO2 replacement. Huber silicates extend the efficiency of TiO2 pigments by minimizing crowding effects and optimizing inter-particle distance for light scattering. When TiO2 is properly spaced, opacity is increased and the appearance of the paper product is enhanced.

Zeocopy™ Synthetic Aluminosilicate Zeocopy synthetic aluminosilicate is used as a color developer in carbon-free sheet coating for carbonless copy paper. This specialty product enhances the reproducibility of the copied print while maintaining the integrity of the original.

Huber: A Partner You Can Depend OnMarket Applications

Specialty and Fine Paper Huber’s products are suitable for a wide variety of specialty and fine paper grades as they enhance the optics and print quality. Light-weight, fine papers are particularly susceptible to strike and print-through and Huber silicates reduce that risk while providing enhanced aesthetics to the finished product. Specialty products, such as carbonless copy paper, take advantage of Zeocopy™ synthetic aluminosilicate’s fast color development and high brightness to deliver a superior copy reproduction each and every time.

Board Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicates and Zeolex synthetic aluminosilicate paper grades provide folding boxboard, white-top and other board applications high brightness and opacity to drive the overall aesthetic of the package incluidng a significant reduction in surface mottling. In addition to reducing need for chemical pulp, the requirement for optical brighteners is also decreased.

Newsprint Excellent brightness, increased opacity, improved color printability and less print-through are all benefits that Huber silicates bring to mechanical paper and newsprint. Additionally, winding problems are a thing of the past when using Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicate, as a 1% addition into the web increases the kinetic friction by 15% enabling rapid production rates with consistent, high-quality results.

Decor PaperOpacity, brightness and color vibrancy are key to any decor application, and Huber’s Zeolex® synthetic aluminosilicates and Hydrex™ synthetic magnesium silicates shine in delivering these benefits. Increased brightness, reduced yellowing and truer color accuracy are properties which enable the design trends of today and those of the future with Huber silicates helping provide that design freedom and flexibility. Additionally, replacing a portion of the TiO2 with Huber silicates improves the economics of the overall process.

Huber Silicates for Paper. Product Properties, Grades, and End Use Benefits

Reduced Abrasion

The amorphous nature of Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicate lends itself to reduced abra-

sion and wear of parts vs. typical crystalline pigments. Reduced wear means more uptime,

increased quality and greater savings.

Control of Friction

Certain processes and formulations tend to produce paper which has a low coefficient of friction. This can cause winding problems like snaking of the paper web, wrinkles, loose winding and telescoping of the reels. Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicate gives the opera-tor control of the process by offering friction control vs. non-containing paper. This en-chances both the process and final product.

Optical Performance

Hydrex synthetic magnesium silicate has a unique pore structure which provides the paper with a significant number of light scat-tering interfaces between the air, pigment and fiber. As a result, Hydrex has excellent light scattering power. This gives Hydrex the ability to remarkably increase paper opacity and brightness as well as to impart a desired blueish-white shade resulting in improved visual appearance to thin printing papers.

Printability

Hydrex™ synthetic magnesium silicate im-proves the paper’s printability. The ink setting is enhanced due to the high sorption capacity of Hydrex. This feature results in increased print image density, which leads to a reduc-tion in total ink demand. Additionally, Hydrex reduces print strike-through by keep-ing the ink at the surface of the paper and preventing migration deep into the sheet. The result is a crisp print with high definition.
