2014 ANNUAL REPORT
3
The core purpose of Hubbard Street Dance
Chicago is to bring artists, art and audiences
together to enrich, engage, and change lives
through the experience of dance.
Hubbard Street is comprised of four
components: 1) a performing company of
professional dancers; 2) Hubbard Street 2,
an ensemble of early-career artists;
3) the Lou Conte Dance Studio (LCDS);
and 4) Hubbard Street’s Youth, Education
and Community Programs.

A message from Hubbard Street’s Executive Leadership
During the 2013–14 season, we were proud to make great strides toward expanding our program offerings in service of our mission to change lives through dance. Our in-school programs grew to reach 1,000 more Chicago Public School students with our choreographic process–based dance curriculum, and we also began reaching additional children in need by piloting a new Adaptive Dance Program for students on the autism spectrum.
In an effort to inspire more audiences to engage with dance, we began a new collaboration with improvisation and sketch comedy company The Second City, designed to demystify the art of contemporary dance. And to ensure that our fans are able to experience the best contemporary dance has to offer, our repertoire now includes works by all of those whom Hubbard Street views as the five master contemporary choreographers working today — Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián and Ohad Naharin — a programming coup 16 years in the making.
This year we also took an important step towards transforming the lives of artists by instituting a new dancer salary structure that ensures annual raises for all company artists. We hope this model will not only increase the well-being of our dancers, for whom we provide year-round salaries and benefits, but may also be adopted by our peer organizations in the field. The endowment created for this initiative led to the greatest increase in the company’s assets in recent years.
Hubbard Street strives to engage people and enrich lives through dance, every day, across Chicago and around the world. This report outlines just some of the people and places we were able to reach throughout the past year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, and the passion of our artists, staff, board members, audiences and students.

Hubbard Street traveled to Serbia to open the 11th annual Belgrade Dance Festival.
“At the opening ceremony of the festival, on March 30 at the Sava Center, visitors will see
the full-length ballet One Thousand Pieces by famous American troupe Hubbard Street
Dance Chicago, appearing for the first time in our region. Critics are unanimous in saying
that the work, inspired by Marc Chagall’s stained glass, is a superb interpretation of the
unpredictability of imagination.” —Danas Belgrade

Hubbard Street performed at the nation’s leading dance venues, including three
performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
“What was unusual about Hubbard Street’s program…was the combination of so many
different elements that kept you constantly engaged, surprised and inquisitive. Each work
was a distinct feat of the imagination, a complete world in and of itself, and yet taken as a
whole the evening had a kind of prickly coherence that felt fresh and alive.”

@_MOZAWA_: Going to @HubbardStreet broadcast @Millennium_Park. Love dance.
Love the company. Love being outside in summer!
“Not only is every one of the artists in this troupe highly accomplished individually, but
together they have developed a remarkable group ethos that enables them to dance as
a single organism without sacrificing any of that individuality. [The Summer Series was]
comprised of fiendishly difficult pieces, each with a very different tone… The company ( just
back from a successful engagement as an opening event at the prestigious Spoleto Festival
in Charleston, South Carolina), danced them all brilliantly.” —Chicago Sun-Times

Hubbard Street worked to help reach the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Arts Education plan’s goal for “every art, every student” by restructuring our programs to include a wider variety of entry points into a quality dance education. Our Movement as Partnership in-school residency program now includes three partnership levels, providing a pathway for schools to be introduced to Hubbard Street’s programs and gradually reach more advanced levels of partnership, allowing us to serve 1,000 more students annually.
“Watching students develop confidence in themselves and their choices has been rewarding while teaching for Hubbard Street. When we first started working together, everyone was very shy and eager to fit in; to be the same. No one wanted to stand out. It’s exciting to see students take the risk of being an individual — to risk being unique and distinct from everyone else. More than that, it’s rewarding to watch students appreciate and honor their classmates’ differences in order to cultivate an environment that promotes and respects bold, creative personal choices.” –Classroom teacher
