2010 was a watershed year for Huawei Australia in a multitude of ways. While Huawei has had an established Australian office since 2004, I believe a string of both business and technological achievements throughout 2010 shows that our localisation strategy is paying dividends for Huawei, and for our partners.

Huawei Australia now has 80% local staff, with Australians serving across every part of the business from the technical division to the executive. Australian employees are steering the local direction of Huawei, including our Chief Financial Officer Brian Hoppe, our Chief Technology Officer Peter Rossi, and the long list of Australians working with partners, working on solutions, working in finance, working with government. We are set to more than double our staff numbers during 2011 from 300 to over 600 while still growing our local staff ratio.

A key marker of our localisation strategy’s success is the creation of the Australian Board of Directors, set to conduct its first meeting by mid-year.

From a business perspective, 2010 marked a series of ‘firsts’ for Huawei Australia. During 2010, Huawei successfully completed its first Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile technology trials with Telstra, Vodafone-Hutchison Australia (VHA), and vividwireless, as well as working on a regional level with Optus parent SingTel. Huawei successfully delivered Australia’s first WiMAX network with vividwireless, using technology which is easily upgradable to Huawei’s LTE solution in the future. Huawei had its first launch event for the Devices division, demonstrating to our partners, media and analysts the broad range of smartphones, tablets, and mobile internet devices which Huawei produces. Huawei also gained its first commercial contract with Telstra with the launch of the T-Touch Tab, an incredibly affordable touch-screen tablet device.

Huawei is not merely growing in Australia due to our expanding global presence. Huawei is growing in Australia on the strength of our relationships with partners, and the power of our innovation. 2010 was a year which saw Huawei working with Optus delivering mobile services to regional Australia, with vividwireless on Australia’s first 4G network, with Telstra on the T-Touch Tab, with VHA on signing a contract to deliver a new mobile network. Across the country, around 50% of Australians are now using Huawei technology for some part of their telecommunications needs.

I hope the information contained our 2010 Corporate Report is of value to you.

04 Technology Report

Technology Report: Chief Technology Officer Peter Rossi

When people ask me how I would describe Huawei, I can sum it up in one word: innovation. Innovation is the driving force behind Huawei on a global level, and innovation is driving Huawei’s business right here in Australia.

Around the world, there is an undeniable trend towards deploying next-generation telecoms networks, and Australia is no different. Huawei has proven itself to be the leader in deploying next-generation fibre broadband networks. In the UK, Huawei is working with BT to deploy the government-backed 21CN (21st Century Network), a fibre-based broadband rollout which the UK government is already using to deliver new and innovative services to citizens. In Singapore Huawei is working with Nucleus Connect, the company chosen to operate the Next Generation National Broadband Network (NGNBN). The Singapore government has made it clear that fibre broadband will be an essential piece of national infrastructure used to deliver health and education services, as well as having broader business and societal benefits.

Huawei is also the partner of choice to deliver National Broadband Network-style infrastructure in Malaysia, the UAE, and Brunei.

Throughout 2010, we forged partnerships with the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society (IBES) and RMIT University. IBES will utilise Huawei technology in creating an NBN ‘test-bed’, where high-speed broadband applications can be developed and tested in a live NBN-style environment. Also, Huawei is contributing $250,000 to a Next Generation Technology Training Centre with RMIT, ensuring that Australian students are trained on the latest Huawei technology.

In Australia, Huawei set numerous technology milestones in 2010. LTE trials with Telstra, Vodafone and vividwireless marked a particular high point, with demonstrated speeds of up to 149.4Mbps with Telstra, and Australia’s first TD-LTE trial with vividwireless. Huawei’s new contract with Vodafone will deliver a new network capable of delivering LTE as well as 2G and 3G technologies.

As a global player, Huawei Australia continues to educate our customers on future technology roadmaps we see developing in telecoms. We have a local slogan which fits perfectly with how we approach technology – “delivering locally, leading globally.” It means our local partners not only benefit from our local expertise, but they also benefit from Huawei’s unparalleled global technological leadership. The numbers behind that innovation are simply staggering: 46,000: The number of staff Huawei has working purely on

Research and Development 10%: The percentage of Huawei’s annualised global revenues

invested back into R&D 11%: Huawei’s share of LTE (Long Term Evolution) essential

patents – Huawei holds more essential LTE patents than any other telecoms network vendor.

Huawei has consistently ranked in the top 5 companies applying for new technology patents every year for the past four years, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

Huawei is already delivering the next generation of telecoms networks around the world, both fixed and wireless. And with a list of successes in Australia throughout 2010, I have no doubt that Huawei will be bringing some more of that global innovation to Australia in 2011.

Financial Report 05

I am pleased to report that the 2010 financial results for Huawei Technologies (Australia) Pty Ltd were overwhelmingly positive. On the back of ongoing agreements with our existing partners and a number of new commercial contracts throughout the year, Huawei’s local results made a significant contribution to our regional and global growth.

Huawei Australia has reported revenues of $171 Million for 2010, representing a 29% increase on revenues for 2009. We secured a number of important new contracts in 2010 and overall Huawei achieved a year-on-year increase in Sales Orders of 35% in the Australian market, leaving us with a strong order backlog position going into 2011. I am also pleased to report that in 2010 Huawei achieved record sales figures for our Devices division, with a series of successes including the Pocket Wi-Fi with Vodafone, the Optus Mini Wi-Fi, and T-Touch Tab with Telstra.

Huawei has plans to continue our growth in 2011 with numerous market opportunities in both fixed and mobile broadband, as operators continue to upgrade their networks to cope with increasing demand. Additionally, the Devices division is also poised for ongoing growth, launching a number of high-profile handsets and securing new sales and distribution channels.

I believe that a key foundation of Huawei’s success during 2010 was the company’s continued investment in best-practice business process. Continuous improvement is one of Huawei’s ‘core values’, and our constant focus on best-practice business process is key to providing our local customers with assurance of efficient and timely project delivery, with our own world-leading solutions and services. On a global scale, Huawei is working with world-leading companies like IBM, Accenture, and the Hay Group in implementing and enhancing comprehensive first-class business process, and this investment enables us to scale quickly and efficiently.

It has been that steadfast focus on best-practice business process that has seen Huawei deliver such a positive result in 2010. I have no doubt that as this work continues, it will drive Huawei to even better results in years to come.

06 Business Development Report

From a Business Development perspective, there is no doubt that 2010 was Huawei’s most important year in Australia since our local office opened in 2004. From both a strategic perspective and a sales perspective, our successes throughout the year show that Huawei has gone from a relative unknown in the telecoms vendor market to a global powerhouse with a firmly established Australian presence.

I measure the success of Huawei’s Business Development strategy in two ways: the number of partnerships Huawei has forged and, more importantly, the strength of those partnerships. 2010 has confirmed that our strategy is working, with both the number and strength of Huawei’s local partnerships increasing during the year.

On each of our key accounts, we have seen significant milestones struck throughout 2010. These are noted in more detail in this Corporate Report, but I will note some particular highlights here:

Business Development Report: David Wang

With VHA: A contract to replace Vodafone’s mobile network in Australia,

which will see Huawei supply 5,800 base stations to replace existing 2G and 3G infrastructure, as well as 2,200 new base station sites. The network will be capable of delivering Long Term Evolution (LTE) by the end of the year.

Live trials of LTE mobile technology, demonstrating download speeds in excess of 74Mbps

The Pocket Wi-Fi modem, Huawei’s latest consumer device, launched in joint marketing activities with Vodafone

With Telstra: Successful trials of LTE with Telstra in Melbourne, with download

speeds hitting an incredible 149.4Mbps The rollout of the T-Touch Tab, Huawei’s first commercial contract

with Telstra and the exclusive Australian launch of Huawei’s 7-inch touchscreen mobile device

With Optus: The ongoing rollout of new 3G sites in the 900MHz band across

Australia’s rural and regional areas New mobile consumer devices, including the Mini Wi-Fi

08 Government and Public Affairs Report

Having delivered a long list of National Broadband Network-style projects globally, Huawei Australia is well equipped to share our global experience with Australia. In 2010, Huawei signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society, bringing Huawei’s fibre technology to a leading academic institution which has created a ‘test-bed’ NBN environment. Huawei also signed an MoU with RMIT University, witnessed by Victorian ICT Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips, which will see Huawei invest $250,000 to create a joint-training facility for Australia’s future telecommunications engineers. The partnership will ensure that Australia has the most up-to-date technological expertise in the NBN rollout, with students to be trained on Huawei’s world-leading fibre technology.

Huawei’s engagement with local institutions and businesses is also creating Australian jobs. John Brumby, then Victorian Premier, came to Huawei’s Shanghai campus to announce a commitment by Huawei to create 300 new Victorian jobs over the next five years. Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, offered his own congratulations and support for the announcement.

I congratulate Huawei on its decision to invest in Victoria.JOHn BRUmBy

Julia Gillard witnessed Huawei sign a contract with vividwireless, a poignant symbol of Huawei’s growing Australian operations.

The Government and Public Affairs division also established a presence with local media. During 2010, Australian media visited Huawei’s Shanghai campus as well as Shanghai Expo on two separate occasions. Media also visited Singapore for a hands-on experience of the Next-Generation Nationwide Broadband Network, being built by Huawei and partner Nucleus Connect.

I like to think of 2010 as just the beginning of Huawei’s engagement with Australia’s government, media, and academic institutions. The National Broadband Network will play a defining role in Australia’s future, and Huawei will continue to ensure Australia is well prepared for a future increasingly tied to broadband.

Jeremy MitchellDirector, Government and Public Affairs

Huawei Australia

Broadband has become a key issue for all levels of government in Australia. This should come as no surprise – around the globe, Huawei is seeing the positive effects of broadband policies which are delivering social services in innovative ways and laying the foundations for economic growth in the digital era.

At the federal level in Australia, both sides of Parliament put broadband development as a key policy focus in the lead up to the federal election in 2010, and the government has made it clear that the rollout of the National Broadband Network is a top priority to set a solid foundation for Australia’s continued economic prosperity. State governments have also made broadband policy a priority, with Tasmania’s government putting its weight behind the NBN and other states working with Universities and research institutions to ensure they too are at the forefront of broadband development. Even local governments and councils have become a key part of the broadband debate, with a growing list of local councils seeking ways to get faster broadband rolled out on faster timelines.

10 Australian Board

Huawei to create Australian Board of Directors

Having established a firm foundation in Australia with an ever-growing local workforce, it was only natural for Huawei to create a local Board of Directors. Huawei Australia has enlisted executive search firm Egon Zehnder to engage with a list of high-profile Australian leaders with proven experience in politics and the business community, with the view to holding the first meeting of the Board of Directors in mid-2011.

The Board will be comprised of a number of prominent Australians mixed with Huawei executives from local and regional offices, as well as a representative from Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

The Board of Directors will be charged with overseeing Huawei’s local operations and growth, ensuring the ongoing success of the company, and increasing Huawei’s already solid ties with its customers, with Australia’s business community, and with the Australian Government.

The significance of the trial with Huawei equipment is that it allowed Telstra to test the performance of LTE at 1800MHz and we were able to test the limits of the technology and explore its performance against a number of criteria... As a technology, LTE has some unique characteristics that result in improved radio network capability and efficiency such as improved capacity and speed.

Huawei provided a fully self-contained 1800MHz LTE-SAE (System Architecture Evolution) network and facilities, including a small number of base station sites in the Box Hill area, as well as test terminals and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) test servers for VoD (video on demand) and broadband data testing.

The trial allowed Telstra to test LTE technology against a number of criteria, such as: Capacity and coverage of LTE with various radio unit

configurations Performance of MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) with

various antenna configurations Interference management and its performance in a live LTE

environment Cell handover performance Propagation performance Latency Performance

2010 was a significant year in marking Huawei’s first commercial contract with Telstra as well as seeing the two companies undertake numerous technology trials. It also set a new high-water mark for Huawei’s Devices division, with the launch of the Telstra T-Touch Tab, Huawei’s first mobile tablet device launch in Australia.

The T-Touch Tab was developed exclusively for Telstra in cooperation with Huawei’s Devices team, and at just 500 grams the device sports the Google Android™ operating system, front and rear cameras, a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth compatibility, with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity through Telstra’s NextG network.

But the success of the T-Touch Tab was just one facet of Huawei’s partnership with Telstra during 2010. In March, Telstra and Huawei announced that they would partner to conduct trials of next-generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile technology in the 1800MHz frequency band.

Our trials with Huawei are giving us valuable insights into the potential of LTE technology at 1800MHz and helping Telstra understand how we can make best use of both existing and potential future spectrum assets to continue to deliver a world class mobile broadband service.

14 Huawei Partnership: vividwireless

vividwireless and Huawei made history in 2010 by rolling out Australia’s first 4G WiMAX network, delivering unprecedented speeds and service quality using wireless broadband technology. Deployed across Perth in record time, the WiMAX network gave vividwireless a technological edge against other fixed-line and mobile networks.

Over 6 short months we have built Australia’s most powerful wireless broadband network and assembled all of the pieces of a leading internet business. This remarkable achievement is a testament to skill, experience, team work, and motivation. Support from Huawei, our supplier of network equipment and terminals, was vital to meeting this tight deadline.ViViDwiRELESS CEO mARTin mERCER

vividwireless signed the supply agreement with Huawei in September 2009, with the completed network up-and-running by March, 2010. In the deployment, Huawei supplied vividwireless with 150 base stations, as well as end user devices including USB modems and a signal booster accessory to offer even greater speeds to users at home or in the office.

But the relationship with vividwireless did not end with the completed Perth network build. Huawei and vividwireless also established smaller CBD foundation WiMAX networks in both Sydney and Melbourne in July 2010, with Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane following in January, 2011.

Already vividwireless and Huawei are collaborating on ways to take the networks to the next level. A key strength of the network technology is Huawei’s SingleRAN solution, which allows vividwireless to upgrade its WiMAX network to the next generation of wireless broadband at the flick of a switch. vividwireless and Huawei have recently conducted live trials of TD-LTE (Time-Division Long Term Evolution) technology, with peak download speeds hitting 128Mbps and average speeds of around 70Mbps.

16 Huawei Partnership: Optus

Optus is Huawei’s longest-standing partner in the Australian market. In 2010, Optus continued to work with Huawei in delivering solutions and services across numerous parts of its business, including mobile infrastructure and consumer devices.

Since 2007, Optus has been deploying an expansive upgrade to its 3G mobile network in the 900MHz and 2100MHz spectrum band. Thanks to the network expansion, many areas of Australia are experiencing competitive mobile services for the first time. Optus has partnered with Huawei since the commencement of the rollout, which continued throughout 2010.

With the project largely completed, Optus has continued its partnership with Huawei as the 3G network is deployed in more rural and regional areas. The project was selected as a finalist in the ‘Best Regional Initiative’ Category at the 2010 ACOMMS Awards.

During the rollout period Optus deployed, on average, 3 Huawei base stations every day. At the beginning of the project, the Optus 3G network covered some 80,000 square kilometres of landmass. Within six months, the Optus network had expanded to cover over 680,000 square kilometres of Australia’s landmass. In total, Optus would utilise Huawei solutions to grow its 3G network to a total coverage area of more than 1 million square kilometres upon project completion.

Huawei’s partnership with Optus also produced the Mini Wi-Fi device. The Mini Wi-Fi creates a portable wireless hotspot which allows up to 5 devices to connect to The Optus Open Network, with fast and simple setup and great value data plans.

We’re extremely happy to be offering this product to our customers, and giving more people the chance to experience Mobile Broadband on The Optus Open Network. By offering the Optus Mini WiFi modem on both Pre-Paid and Post Paid plans will give Optus customers the flexibility to choose an option which best suits them

Huawei’s SingleRAN equipment will deliver maximum theoretical standards of 42Mbps, and is capable of software upgrades which will push speeds even higher. Vodafone is also working with Huawei to prepare the Vodafone network for an upgrade to 4G or LTE – the next generation of mobile technology capable of delivering maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 150Mbps.

Finally, Huawei continued out long-standing relationship with Vodafone in supplying the best mobile broadband devices. During 2010, Huawei supplied a range of USB mobile broadband dongles and mobile handsets to Vodafone, the most notable of which was the Pocket Wi-Fi. An Australian exclusive to Vodafone, this version of Huawei’s E5 portable Wi-Fi modem allows up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices (such as laptops, portable gaming systems, and smartphones) to access a single 3G connection, acting as a router which is small enough to fit in your pocket.

Huawei has had a long-standing partnership with both Vodafone and Hutchison, being named the #1 data card supplier to both companies back in 2007 – long before their merger to become VHA. It was only natural that such a partnership would continue after the merger was completed, and late in 2010 Huawei and VHA completed negotiations for a contract which would see Huawei replace VHA’s entire Radio Access Network, Huawei’s largest Australian contract to date.

The contract was the culmination of a great deal of work during 2010. Most significantly, Vodafone and Huawei collaborated on trials of LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile broadband technology, utilising Huawei’s LTE radio network and back-end systems. In October 2010, following months of trials in Newcastle NSW, Vodafone announced that it had successfully achieved speeds of up to 74.3Mbps – a huge leap from current mobile network speeds.

It was in early 2011 that Vodafone officially announced the Huawei had been chosen to replace its Radio Access Network, a deal which would see Huawei double its Australian staff numbers over the 18-month rollout period.

We’re installing the latest technology from the company that we believe is the best network hardware and software vendor in the world to deliver a better mobile experience to our customers.

niGEL DEwS, VODAFOnE CEO

Under the terms of the contract, Vodafone will replace around 5,800 existing 2G and 3G base station sites with Huawei’s SingleRAN solution, which is capable of delivering 2G, 3G and, later, 4G or Long Term Evolution (LTE) from a single base station site. Vodafone will also install the new Huawei network equipment at more than 2,200 new sites that it will bring into its network over the next 18 months.

Additionally, Vodafone will replace its radio network controller (RNC) equipment with the latest Huawei technology, which will be located at sites in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The RNC equipment serves as a hub that is used to control and optimise the performance of the national mobile network.

2010 was a milestone year for Huawei’s Devices division, with the formal launch of the Huawei brand name a particular high point. Huawei’s success in Devices is nothing new – the company was named the #1 supplier of mobile data cards to Vodafone, Hutchison and Optus as long ago as 2007 – but for the first time in 2010 consumers became familiar with the Huawei brand name.

Huawei’s Australian data card business continues to put the company in a market-leading position. But while Huawei’s USB modem sales remain strong, a much wider range of new devices is now available to the market – including Android powered smartphones, portable Wi-Fi modems, and even tablets.

Mobile Phones

Probably the biggest growth area for the Huawei Devices division, the company closed out 2010 with a number of Huawei

branded models ranged across Optus, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, Crazy John’s, Dick Smith and Allphones.

Launching the first Android 2.2 smartphone in Australia, the Huawei IDEOS remains the most affordable Android 2.2 device on the market. Boasting a capacitive touch-screen, 3.2MP camera, and GPS navigation, the IDEOS also includes Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities allowing users to connect up to 5 devices through the IDEOS data connection. The IDEOS was ranged with VHA and Virgin Mobile, as well as into channels with Crazy John’s and Dick Smith.

Having successfully worked with our operator partners for many years, 2010 also saw Huawei’s expansion into direct dealing with channels and mass retailers, which has already proved a success.

Mobile Wi-Fi

With affordable innovation at the core of our brand, taking consumer broadband WI-FI with Huawei’s E5 mobile Wi-Fi modem has proven a hit with consumers. Vodafone and Huawei collaborated on a marketing campaign to launch the E5 as the ‘Pocket Wi-Fi’, spanning TV, press, online and outdoor activity as well as sponsoring a competition to find ‘Australia’s Biggest Gadget Geek’ with technology magazine T3. With Optus, another E5 model was launched as the ‘Mini Wi-Fi’, available on both pre-paid and contract. Additionally, the E5 has continued to sell throughout the year with Virgin Mobile.

Telstra T-Touch Tab

Huawei’s first commercial contract with Telstra came in the form of the T-Touch Tab, a 7-inch touchscreen mobile tablet. The device, a Huawei S7 tablet customised to Telstra’s needs, uses the Google Android operating system, with front and rear cameras, Bluetooth compatibility, and Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity through Telstra’s NextG network. The device also allows users to access Telstra’s range of NextG mobile services.

Brand Launch

A spectacular event on Sydney Harbour marked the official launch the Huawei Devices brand. Attended by key Australian media and Huawei’s partners, the event saw Huawei offer a sneak-preview of the hottest devices due in 2011 – including the IDEOS X5 now available at Crazy John’s and Dick Smith. 2011 will see further focus on affordable smartphones and increased brand focus with Huawei branded campaigns.

Huawei has long maintained a global leadership position in innovation, and R&D remains at the core of everything Huawei does. With that in mind, it was only natural that with such a blossoming Australian presence, Huawei would want to share that expertise with local academic institutions.

In January 2010, Huawei announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES). The MoU was witnessed by Victorian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister John Lenders, with Huawei technology to be implemented in the IBES National Broadband Network ‘test bed’ environment.

The commitment from Huawei, as well as the continuing support of the State Government of Victoria, ensures that IBES will play a key role in the development of an Australian society that is ready for a broadband-enabled future.iBES DiRECTOR PROFESSOR ROD TUCkER

In July 2010, Huawei announced a second University partnership,

this time signing an MoU with RMIT. The agreement saw Huawei and RMIT partner to train up to 500 Victorian students on a variety of new technologies including fibre Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), Long Term Evolution (LTE), and Next-Generation broadband applications.

Huawei is one of the world’s leading broadband technology companies, and this training program will be the start of the development of a new industry based on the products and services that will be delivered with the advent of super fast broadband.miniSTER FOR inFORmATiOn AnD COmmUniCATiOn TECHnOLOGy JOHn LEnDERS

The partnership was strengthened in December 2010 as Huawei announced the creation of a $250,000 Next Generation Technology Training Centre to be housed at RMIT. The Centre will use Huawei equipment to train students on next-generation broadband deployment and applications, essential skills required for the rollout of the National Broadband Network.

22 Huawei Australia Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Throughout 2010, Huawei Australia significantly increased its involvement in Corporate Social Responsibility programs. The scope of Huawei’s CSR work was not just limited to Australia, with Huawei contributing funds, technology, and hands-on practical help to worthy causes across the entire Pacific Islands region.

Key highlights include:

Mercy Learning Centre, Solomon Islands

With Huawei acting as a key partner to major operators in the Solomon Islands, Huawei’s Australian staff took a hands-on approach to helping the local community. A school for underprivileged children, Mercy Learning Centre, was awarded a A$10,000 grant from Huawei Australia’s A$100,000 Pacific Islands CSR fund. With over 400 children in just one classroom staffed by 15 unpaid, untrained teachers, the grant went towards new chairs and desks to fill three new classrooms, a new computer, printer, and photocopier, formal training for three teachers, two new 1000 gallon water tanks to provide children with clean drinking water, and new books and learning materials for students.

At Huawei, our motto is ‘enriching life through communication,’ and this fund has been created to ensure that Huawei gives something back to communities around the region – to help enrich people’s lives throughout the areas we work in.

Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

Run by the Jobs Australia Foundation, the IYLP contains a series of leadership and personal development courses culminating in a 10-day trek of the Kokoda Trail. Huawei acted as a key sponsor of the program, which saw seven mentors and thirteen ‘mentees’ trek the Kokoda Track with Olympic hurdler and program patron Kyle Vander Kuyp, and foundation Director and CEO of Reconciliation Australia, Leah Armstong.

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney University

Huawei Australia will help drive adoption of e-health training services across the Pacific Islands region after joining forces with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Under a new A$50,000 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment from Huawei, doctors and nurses across the Pacific Islands will be given greater access to up-to-date, online medical training and support programs as part of the International Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate. Huawei and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead are currently developing a technology solution which will make online access to training materials possible in countries currently lacking reliable broadband connectivity.

Nelune Foundation

Huawei sponsors the Nelune Foundation to help ease the burden of cancer patients who may not have the support or resources that are needed to cope with this life threatening illness.

On February 2, 2011, Huawei Australia hosted a special event at the National Press Club in Canberra to launch a groundbreaking new White Paper. Titled Connecting Communities: The impact of broadband on communities in the UK and its implications for Australia, the report offers a compelling new body of evidence on the effects of broadband on society – with broadband found to be key to attracting people back to rural and regional areas, as well as breathing new life into healthcare, education, aged care, and social engagement.

Commissioned by Huawei Australia, the White Paper was independently researched and complied by renowned community regeneration expert Dr Tim Williams. Delving into the UK experience (where Huawei is working with BT/Openreach rolling out the UK’s NBN equivalent), the report found a long list of positive outcomes from high-speed broadband deployment, including: In health: telehealth is saving lives in remote communities in

Scotland. In the care of the elderly: telecare is now enabling 1.7 million to

stay in their communities, lead independent and sociable lives, making huge savings – and strengthening family cohesion.

In the environment: tele-conferencing and related home-working are already reducing emissions and congestion – and supporting greater community involvement.

In education: results improved by two grades and hard to reach kids got switched on – especially if they had access to devices at home and school. Education is being transformed.

Older, disabled, the isolated: all report improved well being from tele-care and greater connectivity, speaking to long-lost friends and family on Skype, getting involved in communities online.

Public service efficiencies: the digitisation of X-rays is saving money and lives; in Wales 22 local authorities and all public services are sharing one network, saving millions and improving quality; NHC Choices (a Facebook for health advice) got 20 million hits in the severe 2010 winter, saving the NHS £44 million; a whole education service has enabled parents to apply for schoolplaces online, reducing costs, and disagreements.

Public servants and politicians: are having to be more responsive, more immediately because of the instantaneous interactivity of fast broadband – and this is empowering people (and different kinds of people) too busy, too private or too remote to go to face to face meetings.

What we’ve found in the UK is that those areas that have high-speed broadband are beginning to attract people back to regional economies. It’s not de-population, it’s re-population. Because you can do a modern job, you can have modern services, you can have the highest quality of life in those areas now that you’ve got connectivity, we’re seeing a recovery of those areas – it’s particularly important for the sustainability of regional economies.DR Tim wiLLiAmS

Green leaderHuawei is actively working towards a sustainable future.

Huawei’s environmentally-friendly products can reduce the power consumption of a base station by up to 60% and can be integrated with environmentally-friendly energy sources sich as wind, methane and solar power, for even greater environmental benefits.

We are continuously working to conserve energy. This has resulted in an average annual energy cost reduction of 6.3% across Huawei operations since 2003.

Huawei is also a member of the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), the most influential environmental protection organisation in the global information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.
