AnewdesignteammadeupofDistinctiveLeaderOptions,Inc.andNorthlandCommunityandTechnicalCollegehasbeenchargedwiththeresponsibilityfordevelopingthenewprograms.Dr.OkokonO.Udo,PatBalstad,DeannaMurphyandSheilaMichaelsaretheteammemberswhoareworkingcloselywithNMFTrainingSpecialistRebeccaWeir.

Guidedbytheirvision“tocreatethebestleadershipprogramFORtheworld,”theteamismindfuloftheneedtomaketheprogramreflectmoreofalife-longlearningapproach.Committedtousingthebestoftechnologyanddevelopmentthatisgroundedinregionalreality,theprogramwillbecost-effective,user-friendly,flexibleandsustainable.

Since1988,theLeadershipDevelopmentProgramoftheNorthwestMinnesotaFoundation(NMF)hasbeenattendedby870individualsinthe12-countyservicearea.ThefocusoftheprogramisruralleadershipandwasdesignedspecificallyforNorthwestMinnesota.Theparticipantsattendedafour-and-a-halfdayresidentialworkshop,andthenreturnedtotheirhomes,theirjobs,andcommunitieswithnewtoolsandskills,whichtheyputtoworkhelpingtoimprovethequalityoftheplacestheylive.

Asecondworkshop,LeadershipII,wascreatedseveralyearsago.Itwasa2-day“refresher”tothefirstworkshop,reinforcingleadershipskillsandservingasawayforparticipantstoreconnectwithpeopletheyhadpreviouslymetandnetworkedwith.Additionally,NMFhasdeliveredSTARTeamsyouthleadershipdevelopment,theOrganizationalExcellenceProgram,anddiversityandculturalcompetenceworkshops.

NMFhasdecidedtorestructureitsoveralladultleadershipprogramtorespondtofeedbackreceivedovertheyearsandtoadapttochangingpriorities.Stafftraveledaroundtheregiongatheringinputthroughfocusgroups.Majorfindingswereidentifiedintheprocessandcombinedwithfeedbackreceivedfromparticipantsofbothleadershipworkshops.

FourfemalepoliticalsciencestudentsgainedknowledgeandnetworkedattheLeagueofWomenVoters’LeadersofTodayandTomorrowconference.WomeninHawleylearnedhowtoprepareforajobinterviewandreceivedanoutfittowearwhenmeetingwithpotentialemployers.Baudetteareawomenandteengirlsreceivedfinancialmanagementtraining.GirlsinClimax-Shelleyschoolsearnededucationalexperiencesthoughanenrichmentprogramforadvancedstudents. Thesebeneficialopportunitiesandmanyothersmightneverhavehappened,ifnotfortheestablishmentoftheNorthwestMinnesotaWomen’sFundanditsgrantprogram,fundingtheseprojectsandmore.OnFebruary21,1997,theBoardoftheNorthwestMinnesotaFoundationbecameoneofthemostvisionary,progressivecommunityfoundationsinallofMinnesotabyestablishingaregionalWomen’sFund. NormaHansonisoneoftheoriginatorsoftheNorthwestMinnesotaWomen’sFund.ConversationsbeganwhenshewasservingontheNorthwestMinnesotaFoundationBoardofDirectors,workingwithRuthEdevold,whowasexecutivedirector.TheydeterminedthatwomenandgirlsfacemanyinequitiesinnorthwestMinnesota,resultinginmissedopportunities,wastedleadershippotential,andunrealizeddreamsandaspirations. “Throughmyexperiencesintheregionasamemberofvariousboards,asacommunityvolunteer,andruralfarmpartner,itbecameapparentthatasourceoffinancialsupportwasbadlyneededinourregion,beyondwhatthefoundationcouldprovide.Theideaarosetocreateacomponentofthefoundationthatwasspecificallydevotedtowomenandgirls,”Hansonsaid. Hanson,Edevold,andotherwomeninterestedinfindingwaystoimprovethelivesofwomenandgirlsinnorthwestMinnesotaattendedfocusgroupmeetings,whichwereheldinThiefRiverFalls,CrookstonandBemidji.Communityleaderswereinvitedwhosharedthebeliefthatwomenintheregionneedtofullyunderstandandparticipateinareasthatimpacttheirlives,suchasfinance,business,estateplanning,careerdevelopment,andothers.Theirtaskwastoidentifytheuniqueproblemsorissuesconfrontingwomenandgirlsinnorthwest

Hansonhasbeenamemberoftheadvisorycommitteeeversince.SheisoneofthefirstFounders’Societymembers,hasmadetwoadditionalFounderdonations,andisalsoaVisionaryPartner. “BeingpartoftheNorthwestMinnesotaWomen’sFundishelpingtocreateinterestandfascination,”Hansonsaid.“Itisencouragingwomentosucceedandcommittomakingadifference.” CurrentAdvisoryCommitteeChairFlorenceHedeenstated,“Bystimulatingdiscussions,promotingideasanddevelopingandcommittingfinancialresources,theWomen’sFundwillrealizeitsvision,”shesaid.“Thereisagreatneedinourregionforwomenandgirlstoshareandusetheirpersonalstrengths,talentsandresources.Wemustencouragethemsowecanmakethemostoftheirabilities.” Todate,theWomen’sFundendowmenthassurpassedthe$260,000mark,madepossibleprimarilythrough153individualdonationsof$1,000totheFounders’SocietyandVisionaryPartnerprograms.Investmentearningshavebeenputtowork,withover$15,500distributedintotalgrants,helpingtosupportprogramsandactivitiesforwomen

andgirls.Althoughthisisnotasubstantialamount,itisanexcitingdevelopmentforthefoundingmembersanddonorswhowatchedtheWomen’sFundgrowfromthetheoriesdevelopedbyfocusgroupswithzerodonordollars,tothelevelithastoday. AdvisorycommitteememberandformerChairNancyCarrollexpressedhercommitmenttotheWomen’sFundverywell.Shesaid,“WhyamIamemberoftheFounder’sSocietyandaVisionaryPartner?Because,ItrulybelieveintheVisionStatement:Aregionwherewomenandgirlsshareandusetheirpersonalstrengths,talentsandresourcesand…usetheirleadershipabilitiesinthehome,school,workandcommunity.”

Ithasbeenalong-termgoaloftheWomen’sFundtorecognizewomenatalllifestagesfortheircontributionstofamily,organizations,communityandtheregion.Theever-popularCommunityBuilderrecognitionprogramisoneofthewaysthatgoalisachieved.Twenty-threeextraordinarywomenfromacrosstheregionhavebeenrecognizedfortheircontributionsasmentors,communityvolunteersandforprofessionalexcellence.Nominationsaresolicitedeachyear,withselectionsmadeinMay.ReceptionstocelebratetheawardsarearrangedandhostedbytheWomen’sFundinthehometownofeachCommunityBuilder. Co-sponsoringWomen’sHistoryMontheventsandtheNorthwestMinnesotaWomen’sHallofFamebeganin1998inapartnershipwithBemidjiStateUniversityWomen’sStudiesProgram.Nineteenindividualshavebeenselected

throughnominationsinthisexclusivegroupofwomenwhohavehadalifetimeofimpactandinfluenceintheregion.Amongthemaremanypioneersintheirchosenfieldorinnontraditionalcareers.OriginaloilportraitsoftheinducteesareondisplayinaHallofFameexhibitintheACClarkLibraryontheBemidjiStatecampus. Throughtheyears,numerousforward-thinkingwomenhaveservedontheadvisorycommittee.CurrentmembersareNormaHansonofGoodridge;FlorenceHedeen,Chair,ParkRapids;VickiSvedarsky,Vice-Chair,Crookston;GloriaKaste,Secretary,Fertile;JodyHorntvedt,Treasurer,Baudette;JeannineWindels,Crookston;BarbaraMuesing,Fosston;andNancyCarroll,ParkRapids. Thecommitteehasrecentlybeenworkingonrenewalofthefund’sstrategicplan.Theyhaveheldaretreat,whichaccomplishedarefreshedmissionstatement,visionandgoals.Workcontinuestocreateactionplansbuiltaroundthenew,focusedsetofgoalsandobjectives. Oneofthenewestadvisorycommitteemembers,BarbaraMuesing,skillfullyarticulatedwhatliesahead.Shesaid,“ThefoundersoftheNorthwestMinnesotaWomen’sFundmadetheirownway,inspiredbyamissiontoimprovethequalityoflifeforwomenintheregion.Theirextraordinarypatiencewasmatchedbyremarkableimaginationandgenerosity. “Tenyearslater,”sheadded,“visionarypartnersaremovingforwardwithanequallyambitiousagendatoencourageandequipwomentoreachtheirfullpotential.Thevisionisbold.Thetimeisright.”

significantroleinthedeliveryoftheprogram.Oneofthemajorcomponentsisfortheparticipantstostayconnected,tobenefitfromprofessionalcoachingastheycreatetheirpersonalvisionanddeterminehowtheycanimplementtheirindividualplans.Mostofthatworkwillbedeliveredonlinethroughavarietyofforms.Networkingwithintheregionandamongprogramparticipantsisanintegralpartofthedesign.

Will the training result in increased effectiveness and productivity for everyone? Certainly!Inthecurrentdesignprocess,outcomesareadefiniteconcernandwillinformtherigorandintensitywithwhichtheprogramdevelopmentprocessisengaged.Weintendtobuildevaluationstrategiesintoeverystepofthedeliverytoinsurerelevanceandmeasureongoingimpactoftheprogrambeyondtheclassroomsetting.Theprogramwillprovidethestructureandresourcestoassistallparticipantsastheydeterminetheirstrengthsandhowtoapplythemintheirlivesandintheircommunities.

Will the training be useful to both non-profit and for-profit workers and businesses?Traditionally,thefoundation’sprogramshavetendedtohaveanonprofitfocus.Giventherealityoflifeintheregion,forbothnonprofitandfor-profitorganizations,needsforcompetentleadersandexcellentstaffdevelopmentopportunitiesexistacrosssectors.Thegoalofthecurrentdesignistomeettheneedsofindividualsnomatterwhatsectortheyserve.

In a recent interview, Dr. Okokon Udo answered questions about the new design:What does the new Individual Leadership Development Program hope to achieve? ThedesignteamhasbeengiventwomajortasksbytheBoardofDirectors,namely:redesignoftheindividualleadershipprogramandcreatingaframeworkforintegratingallofthefoundation’sleadershiprelatedprogramsintoaneasilynavigablestructureandflow.Thiswillallowindividualstodeterminewherebesttoentertheprogram,whichwillhaveseveraldifferenttracks.Withregardtotheindividualleadershipprogram,thedesignteamhasthevisionofcreatingthebestpossibleprogram-notjustforthe12-countyregion,butfortheworld.Thegoalistomakeaprogramavailablelocallythatiscomparabletoanyofferedglobally.Theprogram,whenlaunched,willbebasedonclearlydefinedcompetenciesaimedatdeepeningpersonalawarenessofone’sleadershipandenhancingtheimpactofsuchleadershipathome,work,andthebroadercommunity.

How will it meet the needs of Northwest Minnesota residents? Abigstrengthisthattheentiredesignwillbebasedonthereality,assetsanduniquechallengesoftheregion.Assuch,itwillhavearegionalfocuswiththeintentionofexpandingtheindividual’sperceptionofhowlocalactionsimpacttheworld.Giventhefoundation’slimitedresourcesandfocus,theprogramisintendedsolelyforresidentsoftheregion.

Will the programming include ways for the participants to stay connected and network? Inlinewiththetimes,technologywillplaya

Udosaidtheteamisexcitedaboutthechallengesahead.“Weareanticipatingthepossibilitiesofwhattheregionwillbecomeandtheconnectionsthatwillbemadebetweenitandtheworld,whilebeinggoodstewardsoftheregion’sresources,”hesaid.

TheActionTeamManagerfortheBemidji-Blackduck-KelliherThriveInitiativesiteisCarolHeimsoth.Shecomestothepositionwithextensiveexperienceinmaternal-childhealth,aswellasincommunityorganizingandgrantmanagement.Herleadershipwillbringpeopletogetherwhoareinvolvedintheissuesaroundearlychildhoodmentalhealthtodevelopaplanforthearea. PartneringwithNMFinthemanagementoftheThriveInitiativeistheBeltramiAreaServiceCollaborative.AccordingtoExecutiveDirector

JohnPugleasa,theyareveryexcitedabouttheopportunity.“InfantandearlychildhoodmentalhealthhasbeenanareaofspecificconcerntoourChildren’sMentalHealthTeamforsometime,”Pugleasasaid.“Weseethisasanopportunitytointegrateourchildren’smentalhealthworkwiththeThriveInitiative.Clearly,thesoonerweareableto

getyoungchildrenandfamiliestheservicesandsupporttheyneed,thegreaterthelikelihoodthattheywillbefullypreparedtoenterschool.” TheActionTeam’sfirstpriorityistoconductacommunitysurveyandidentifycurrentservicesandopportunitiesforfamilies.Aspringseriesofcommunityforumswilllaythebasisforanactionplan. NMFisoneofsixMinnesotaInitiativeFoundations(MIFs)workingtoaddressearlychildhoodissuesthroughoutthestate.Ithashelpedtoform64coalitionstoimproveearlycareandeducationopportunitiesforyoungchildren.TheNMFserviceareaincludescoalitionsinNaytahwaush,Fertile-Beltrami,Warroad,Bagley,ThiefRiverFalls,MarshallCounty,LakeoftheWoods,Crookston,ParkRapidsandtheBemidjiarea.

Northwest Minnesota Foundation Launches New Effort for Early Childhood Mental Health

With$1.5millionfromtheBushFoundationina$2.5millionproject,theNorthwestMinnesotaFoundation(NMF)isoneofsixpilotsitesparticipatinginthestatewideMinnesotaThriveInitiative–promotingthehealthysocialandemotionaldevelopmentofouryoungestchildren.NMFhasselectedtheBemidji,BlackduckandKellihercommunitiesforthepilotsiteinitsservicearea.Theywillreceive$380,000overthreeyearsforplanningandimplementingacontinuumofcare.ThesixMinnesotaInitiativeFoundations(MIFs)arecollaboratinginthisjointventure. NMF’sEarlyChildhoodSpecialistLinBackstromdescribesearlychildhoodmentalhealthasthedevelopingcapacityofachildtoexperience,regulate,andexpressemotions;formcloseandsecureinterpersonalrelationships;andexploretheenvironmentandlearn.“Ayoungchild’shealthysocialandemotionaldevelopmentformsastrongfoundationforallotherdevelopment,includingcognitive--theabilitytolearnandthriveinschool.”Backstromsaid. Childrenundertheageoffivecanexperienceanarrayofemotional,behavioralandmentalhealthproblems,mostofwhichgountreated.Parentsandcaregiversareoftenunsurewhattodoorwheretoturn.Unsettledlivingconditions,poorbondingwithcaregivers,familyviolence,andsubstanceabusecanbecontributingfactors.Leftuntreated,earlychildhoodmentalhealthproblemscanleadtodifficultyinschool,aninabilitytodevelopfriendships,andpoorsocialskills. ThegoalsoftheMinnesotaThriveInitiativearetoraiseawarenessofchildren’smentalhealthneedsbetweentheagesofbirthandfive,determineexistingservicesandgaps,anddevelopofnetworkofservicesforfamiliesandyoungchildren,supportinghealthysocialandemotionaldevelopment.ThelocalActionTeamwillworktogatherinformationanddevelopaplan,sothatexistingservicesworkwelltogetherandgapsinserviceareeliminated.Trainingforprofessionals,parentsandthewholecommunitywillalsobepartoftheplan.
