What yyou ssee –– Lounge Habits, on Road No. 45, Jubilee Hills(near State Art Gallery) is a concept that could go well with justabout anyone today. It is basically a place where you can spendleisure time, attend workshops, have fun with family and friendsor just slouch on a sofa and read a book.

Started by some young turks (the oldest one is 26 years old!),

Lounge Habits is set in a multi-storied bungalow. The colororange rules here, whether it is in the paint of the building, theclothes and caps of the people at your service or even the visit-ing card of the ones running the show. Wooden and cane chairsin the restaurant upstairs and the coffee shop downstairs, beanbags in the rooms (bulky ones for older people and small ones forthe kids) and a face-shaped tooth-pick holder with a ring for theear are all part of the interesting décor here.

What yyou gget –– This is a place where you can read a book, play asimulation game, watch a movie, enjoy a board game, hold aworkshop or even attend one – and all this while you munch ona sandwich and flush it down with a coke.

On the ground floor is the coffee shop where you can sit outsideand sample some cappuccino or espresso. Walk up the stairsand there is a lot more that you can do. To start with, for kids theyhave games and toys that range from building blocks and adven-ture path games to electro-magnetic sets to help learn scienceand electronic rattles for babies. The charges are Rs. 100 for

each kid for one hour for any number of toys or board games. For older kids there are Wii simulation games to try out and Xbox360 to spend time with. You can even try one of these games forfree to gather whether you would enjoy playing it or not. Trust us,it is fun. The games here range from classic Kameo to YuvrajSingh Cricket 20.

Then there are loads of movies you can pick from. Schindler’sList, Gone with the Wind, Salaam Bombay, Roja, Kramer VsKramer and Annamaaya are just a part of the varied collectionthat you can check out. Kids can enjoy some series like the HarryPotter, Tom and Jerry, Tales of Akbar and Birbal etc. There aresome educational movies too from Discovery Travel and Livingand National Geographic, apart from rhymes, grammar and VedicMaths. For a three-hour slot of their home theater they charge Rs.1,000. The group could be as large as 15 people.

So what else can you do here? Well, you can just pick up a bookfrom their range which includes titles by Agatha Christie, SatyajitRay, Richard Bach and PG Wodehouse among others. They even

have Tintin and Calvin and Hobbes. There are interesting combooffers like a club sandwich, coke and a book (no time limit forreading) would come for Rs. 175. Soups, salads, corn wraps, piz-zas, pastas, sizzlers and desserts like chocolate sledge andcheese cake are the other things you can binge on here.

After all those activities you can even end up buying somethings from here. Lounge Habits allows you to pick up anythingfrom the lounge for a price. Some interestingly designed stuffincludes a zipped fake coconut, a dhobi ghaat photo frame anda wine bottle lamp.

Lounge Habits also allows you to hold workshops where you canshowcase your theatrical talent, musical abilities and more. Youcan even use their services to do something special for your

loved one. For instance, candle light dinners with live guitar, or asalsa/tango dance. You could even step into their kitchen andcook up something for your beloved.

Our vverdict –– This is a place that could take away your worriesabout how to spend a weekend the edutainment way. There issomething for the entire family. And then it allows you to choose. For instance, if you were to watch a movie with your 15 friends ata theater you would have limited choices in terms of timings andthe type of movie. Here you can decide to watch even an old clas-sic at around 10 in the morning. What’s more? It is a place whereyou can comfortably spend time alone as well with a book in onehand and a coffee mug in another.

An aavid ccoin ccollector ssharessome iinvaluable ttips.

Old coins, paper currency, stamps, fountain pens andminiature wine bottles. An eclectic collection but a hobbynonetheless for Kesava RRao MM. MetroMela spoke with thisavid collector of unique and old stuff and got to know thatKesava Rao quit his ‘secure government job’ to pursue afuture in professional coin and paper money collection. Andtoday, even after 35 years, his face does not fail to display hispassion when he flaunts each of his masterpieces. One ofthese is the 2 Rupee 50 Paisa currency note of 1917 thatequaled a US dollar then. Apparently, this rare piece of curren-cy is worth Rs. 7 crores today, we are told. Kesava Rao shareswith us his tips on how such a rare collection can be built.

BUYING GGUIDE…]One of the most reliable sources is the Reserve Bank ofIndia, which releases commemorative coins and currencynotes.]For stamps, any Head Post Office would have a PhilatelyBureau. You have to become a member here to buy stampsdirectly from the government.]Individual coin collectors often sell and exchange coins andpaper currency. So do make a point to discuss hobbies withpeople you meet. You might just find a collector like you. ]It’s always good to have two pieces of the same coin so thatyou can exchange the extra piece with a new one. A jewelercan easily mold a fake Ashrafi. Hence it’s wise to buy from areputed seller/dealer.]Outlets are there too but it is better to crosscheck the back-ground of the outlet to avoid buying fake stuff.]The price of a stamp or a currency note depends on its avail-ability and its age. The older ones cost more. ]Serious collectors can also refer to ‘The Standard Guide toSouth Asian Coins and Paper Money Catalogue – since 1556AD’ by Krause Publications, Iola, Wisconsin, USA.

PRESERVATION TTIPS…] Preserve all your coins, currency notes and stamps inalbums.] Do not fold the currency notes and avoid taking them out ofthe album or touching them.] Do not wash coins with chemicals or other detergents. ] Protect your collection from dust and moisture and alwayskeep a count of your collection.

Padma Shri awardee, All England Open Badminton Championand a recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, PullelaGopichand is all that and much more. To begin with, did youknow that apart from badminton he loves thesport of soccer? Or that his favorite music is theIndian classical form?

Gopichand likes to experiment when it comes tofood and enjoys sampling new cuisines. Andwhen it comes to leisure, he likes getting theadrenalin rush with adventure sports like waterrafting. Balancing that passion is his interest inreading books like The Monk who sold his Ferrariand The Power of Now.

Gopichand spent some time with MetroMela sharing his tipson badminton in particular and sports in general. Read on:] The ideal age to start training in badminton is around sevenyears. However, that should not stop people above that age tostart learning the sport either. As Gopichand says, “I started learn-ing badminton when I was eleven.”] You could play badminton either for excellence or for exercise. Ifyou are going for the former, Gopichand says that opportunities togrow professionally are getting better. ] Exercise in the form of badminton helps because it increasesstrength, flexibility, agility and coordination. “It is basically an all-body sport,” he adds.

] One hour of badminton or any other form of exercise isessential every day for kids (seven hours a week). For eld-

ers, four hours a week is good enough.] Gopichand believes that the Indian diet isnot protein-heavy. So he suggests the intakeof chikkis, biscuits and soya bean productsfor a balanced meal.] It is better to stay away from burgers, piz-zas and fried items.] Food and energy is best absorbed immedi-ately after a sport or exercise. “That’sbecause the body is like a sponge and soaksin the entire intake. So the best food shouldbe taken after a training session,” advisesGopichand.

] It is possible to manage sports and studies simulta-neously. How, you ask and he adds, “Just cut down on

your television viewing time.”

Old sarees of our mothers and grandmothers, especiallythe wedding ones, are likely to be found neatly wrapped andtucked into a closet. Such yards of richness get their chanceof stepping out only when the closet is being cleaned; simplybecause the saree would have become old or damaged andthe fabric would have lost its luster. The original zardosi (goldthread work) or embroidery work, however, would still bebreathtakingly beautiful. Here’s what MetroMela thinks youshould do with such sarees instead of letting them rot away tooblivion.

There are several boutiques in the city which help you trans-fer the original work from one fabric to another. So this wayyou can get an entirely new saree, salwar suit or even a wallpiece made, with the help of your old one. The work of theboutiques that we list below is so neat that it’s difficult for aperson to find out that the zardosi or embroidery work is actu-ally old and has just been transferred. Better still, the oldsaree will find a good use.

Sarang (Rekha Lahoti)469, Road No. 10, Opp. Ofen,Banjara Hills, HyderabadTel – 040-66822121, 66564477This boutique can get all kinds of work transferred to a newfabric – ranging from Kalamkari (hand-painted or block-printed) work and zardosi to embroidery and artificialleather. You can even get printing, dyeing, sequins or lacework done over here. Sarang specializes in placement trans-fer which means that instead of transferring the entire workin the same pattern from an old saree to a new one, theydesign a new placement for all the beads, sequins, zardosior gota work (appliqué). Based on the amount of work, sucha creation would take at least 20 days. Charges start from

She can transforma new plain saree into an exquisiteone with the help of your old saree. You can get a lot of new embroidered(especially the Parsi embroideredones) sarees here as well. She alsodeals in bed sheets, dress materialand jewelry. Asha takes 20-30 days toget the work done. You could get asaree done (with her new saree andyour old saree) for Rs. 4,000-5,000based on the kind of work it involves.

Ira BBoutique (Shilpa / Richa)Near Ohri’s, Road No. 12,Banjara Hills, HyderabadTel – 09848047491 (Shilpa),09885046861 (Richa)

This sister duo run the boutique from home. Butas (floralmotifs), zardosi, embroidery, borders, dyeing, printing etc canall be freshly done or transferred here. They can even buy thefabric that you want to get it transferred to. A simple transfer, say on the border, would take about two weeks and wouldcost about Rs. 650. You can get blouses, salwar suits, kurtis, tunics, skirts and gowns designed and tailored here as well. This boutique is about four years old. Shilpa is an alumnus of

the National Institute of FashionTechnology.

What yyou ssee - The BJN Hotels Group took a long time toexpand in Hyderabad. But when they did, it was with a bang. Theystarted off with Angeethi, the Punjabi dhaba-like restaurant thathas been doing really well in the city, thanks to the economically-priced buffet. And then waited for years (wonder why?) to starttheir other restaurants in the city.

With the City Center mall opening up in Hyderabad, the BJNGroup has booked a complete floor for their businesses rangingfrom Aromas of China for Cantonese and Shanghai cuisines toFirangi Paani, a pub with an ambience of the Victorian era. Wedecided to check out Indi Joe, their multi-cuisine restaurant onthe same floor.

The restaurant is not flashy when it comes to the colors that areused for the décor. Only subtle colors like brown, black, beige andwhite abound here, whether it is in the furniture, the walls, thestylish bar, in the uniforms that the stewards wear or even thecutlery (barring the silverware).

We visited this restaurant on a weekday. Not that it made a dif-ference because it was full even then. We luckily managed to getseats for ourselves.

What yyou gget - Like Angeethi, this restaurant is popular for its buf-fet. It’s a lavish spread starting from soups and salads to pastriesand soufflés. What’s more? You could choose from a variety ofcuisines by either going for spaghetti, plain rice or even hashbrown potatoes (made right in front of you). In fact, some of thenames were totally new to us. The food was nonetheless deli-cious. Everything tasted just right – neither too spicy, nor toobland.

The best part is, of course, the dessert. Here you could choosefrom ice creams, soufflés and muffins or even dip your piece ofapple or cake in liquid chocolate. And then there are flat-paneltelevisions for your entertainment here; though you may not beable to really hear what’s going on because of the loud music andthe general din.

Our vverdict –– We give our thumbs up to Indi Joe because the buf-fet here is worth every penny of the Rs. 182 (inclusive of taxes)they charge per person. But make sure you go there in the after-noon as that is when they serve buffets. Evenings are for ‘a lacarte’ options like pizzas, sizzlers and the like.

What yyou ssee –– This restaurant isn’t difficult to locate. Bangopposite City Center and right there on the ground floor (so youdon’t have to wait endlessly for an elevator to take you up there),Yoko is a restaurant that looks neat and clean right from theentrance. Comfy chocolate brown leather sofas outside for thewaiting crowd, wooden flooring inside, suede orange chairs anda huge wall display of cutlery, are whatprimarily make the interiors here.

What yyou gget –– Yoko is for siz-zlers. Well, they do serve, pastas, pizzas, salads, soups and burgers, butwhen you are in Yoko, youcannot step out withoutsinking your teeth into a pipinghot sizzler.

Let’s however, give you an overview of the variety that they haveon offer. In soups, apart from the usual crème varieties they havesome unique ones like Spinach and Corn or Onion and Cheesetoo. These start from about Rs. 75. Salads include the Russiansalad, Vegetable cocktail (Rs. 135) and more. We tried the latterand it turned out to be a mix of finely chopped veggies in mayon-naise, served like a cocktail in a glass. This one goes perfectlywith the Garlic toast (4 pieces – Rs. 65) on offer.

You should try some of the non-alcoholic concoctions here. Mostof these go with interesting names and the menu card, thankful-ly explains what you can expect in each too. There is CrimsonTide (a mix of orange juice, mango juice and cassis or black cur-rant syrup) which isn’t too innovative when it comes to taste

(much like Maaza). But then there is Coco Kiss (Rs. 85) which isan interesting mix of cola and coconut. This one is worth a try. There are the regular Iced teas too.

Now coming to the main course of sizzlers. Here you can try thechicken or the vegetarian variety. Served with French Fries andvegetables, these come with a heady appetizing aroma. We triedthe Veg Sizzler with Baked Beans and Noodles (Rs. 255) and

Veg Shaslik (Rs. 245). Delicious is the word that would gowith both of these as they neither had the

uncooked texture nor did they havethe burnt flavor. The cutlet did seem

a little sweet though. Yoko evenhas a desserts section whichincludes the usual stuff. But youneed to have a huge appetite totry out the desserts after the fill-

ing sizzlers.

Our vverdict –– Food is gratifying here andthe portions of sizzlers are ample. Service is

quick. The crowd that frequents includes families as well as theyoung college-going/working breed. Valet parking is available.Prior reservations would help as the place has people coming inhordes. Private parties too can be arranged here for about 50people, according to Rahul Gandhi, a partner with Yoko.Needless to say, Hyderabad’s lucky to be on Yoko’s map afterMumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Dubai.

Hyderabad knows how to party, and also knows its music. From lazy lounge to heart thumping electro techno, the DJsin clubs and pubs in Hyderabad spin it all. So if you’re a

music aficionado who knows the beat per minute of your favouritesong, or just a regular party-hopper, you won’t be disappointed.

But just to make it easier, we’re givingyou the lowdown on what type of musicplays where; to help you pick andchoose the party destination accordingto beats you want to swing to.Remember though, that a club maydecide to play one or more of the genresbelow, so this is in no way a restrictivelist. It’s more of a guide to the popularjoints in Hyd to dance to the differentkinds of music we all love.

A- AAlternative…Alternative Rock is not very groovy todance to, so the only time you may hear bands like the Foo Fightersor Linkin Park play is if the place is playing Worldspace! But if you’rereally keen, pubs like 10 Downing Street (10 D) may just play someAlternative rock, but only during afternoons!

B- BBhangra…Bhangra has gone global and is a definite fixture in most clubDJ sets. One can jump to Punjabi MC on ‘Bollywood Nites’ inBottles & Chimney (B &C), 10 D, Myst and sometimes evenAhala.

B-BBollywood…Get one thing straight.Bollywood remixes rock and welove them. So they’re alwaysgoing to be there. Almost everyhappening party will have somecool Bollywood remixes thrownin for some good ol’ desi flavor.Specialists are B&C and Ahala, especially on dedicatedBollywood nights.

C- CClub…Club music is currently the

rage of the Hyderabad night life. From sexy remixes of JustinTimberlake to hardcore Club legends like Benny Benassi, clubssuch as Touch pump up the revelers with club tracks. Ahala isanother cool place to check out some vibrant sounds.

D-DDance…Dance and Club are pretty similar, so theclubs that play the former would playDance as well. Wednesday nights inTouch, Ahala, F Bar as well as otherplaces such as Myst and Firangi Paaniwould be a good choice.

E-EElectro…B&C and Liquids are known to playTechno every once in a while. But Electrois as popular as Dance/Club. Touch andAhala also play Electro, but only a fewelectro tracks would be squeezed in, sodon’t count on a complete night ofElectro!

H- HHip-hhop…50 Cent, Kanye and other gangstas alsomake us jump, so the DJs in B&C, FirangiPaani and Ahala will play a good measureof some hip-hop to all you playas!

L –– LLounge…Touch owns this genre. DJ Yogi will spinsome cool lounge for all the party peopleevery Saturday night, but it’ll be duringthe beginning of the night. Later on,more of Club music is played. Ahala,Liquids (especially on Friday nights) andSixth Element will also play some coolsoothing Lounge music, ideal for anunwind session.

R- RRock… Rock can never die. So pubs like 10Downing Street and Firangi Paani giveyou enough reason to drink another pintwhile the cool riffs of Pink Floyd, theScorpions and Guns n Roses pipethrough the speakers. Retro nights in 10D are specially worth checking out, ifyou’re a true ‘Rock star’ at heart.

Ahala and Touch will play remixes of rocktracks, but not pure rock as such. Sothere you go. A complete guide to what’splaying where to help you decide whichpub to hop to this weekend!

The very name ‘Sahib, Sindh, Sultan’ spells opulence andsure enough we weren’t disappointed! Right from the décor tothe elegantly carved water jugs, this is one restaurant that isclassy in every sense. Built to resemble a luxury railway coachin the early twentieth century, dining here is an experience initself. One of the earliest telephone models adorns the wallsof the ‘railway platform’ style dining area, even as bearers inquaint uniforms and turbans bustle about getting in and outof the ‘bogey.’ The restaurant owes its unusual name to thefirst train that ran between Mumbai and Thane. The threecoaches were named Sahib, Sindh and Sultan.

We started our meal with a starter of Makai Motia Sheekhand Zamindari Achari Aloo. They were lip-smacking and atreat for us vegetarians. Our appetite being whet, we decid-ed to order the main course, which were Bhutta Palak Methiand Paneer Kastoori Bhurjee. The captain suggested arather intriguing Aloo aur wadi ki tehri which turned out tobe a spicy rice preparation. The meal was delicious to saythe least. We rounded off with an ‘Indian Sweet Sampler’which turned out to be a three-in-one combination of kheer, kulfi and ras malai. To sum it up, the starters and maincourses were very good but the dessert was ordinary. Therates in the restaurant are on the higher side and a vegetar-ian meal for two will cost about Rs. 500. The non-vegetarianfare sounded very appetizing too. All in all, it’s a restaurantto go to if you want to get rid of the bulge in your pocket andsee it appear in your tummy!

Reiki experts in the city teachyou how to learn and healthrough a centuries old method

Reiki, which comes from two Japanese words (Rei and Ki),means Universal Life Force Energy. It is basically a hands-onhealing technique which uses the body’s inherent energy (theuniversal life force), the Ki, to heal various problems - be itrelated to the mind, body or soul. This healing procedure ismore than a couple of 1,000 years old. Though it’s not a sub-stitute for medical treatment, it is meant to complement thesame for a speedy recovery.

In this process, a Reiki practitioner transmits energy throughhis/her hands into the body of the receiver.

As Reiki flows through an unhealthyarea, it washes away any negative

thoughts or feelings lodged in theunconscious mind/body.

There are four levels to learning Reiki. The first levelteaches you self-healing and introduces you to the art ofhealing others through Reiki. The second level gives youtraining in distance healing. The other two levels are forthose who wish to take it up at the professional level or whowish to teach others. MetroMela traced some renownedexperts in Reiki who can heal as well as train you in this art.

Dear Natasha,

Yet another action packed week ended in Mumbai - full of fun and frolic. It was a weekend of introspection toobecause it has made me realize many things. Like having money when none of your friends have any is as goodas not having any. I have also gathered many insights into the love life of south Indian men. And what I haveunearthed is most disheartening because comprehension of these truths will not change my status anytime soon;in spite if me being a virile, gallant, well-educated, good looking and sincere South Indian. Sigh!

Let me explain. The future of people like me is shot to hell as soon as parents bestow names that are anythingbut alluring. I cannot imagine a more foolproof way of making sure that the child remains single till classifiedadvertisements or that maternal uncle in San Francisco thinks otherwise. Name him “ParthasarathyVenkatachalapthy”. He will grow to be known as Partha. And before he knows, his smart, seductively namedNorthy classmates will start calling him Paratha. The result - No woman in her right mind will go anywherenear poor Parthasarathy.

Yes Natasha, nomenclature is the first nail in the coffin. In a kinder world they would just name the poor south-ern male child and throw him off the balcony. “Yes Appa we have named him Goundamani...” THUD. Lifewould have been harsh to him anyway.

Couple this with the other failures that have plagued our existence. In a disco while we can manage the medi-um hip shake with neck curls, once the Bhangra starts pumping we are as fluid as cement and gravel in a mixer.

And then the women love a man who digs pasta and fondue. But why do they not see the simple pleasures ofcurd rice and coconut chutney? When poor Senthilnathan opens his tiffin box in the office lunch room his femalecoworkers just disappear on seeing the tamarind rice and papads. They rematerialize around Bobby Singh whohas ordered for Pizza and Garlic bread.

Sociologically too the South Indian man is severely sidelined. An average stud of my origin stays in a housewith, on average, two grandparents, three sets of uncles and aunts, and over 10 children. Not the ideal atmos-phere for some intimacy, is it?

Alas, it does not end there. On the first night, as the stud sits on his bed finally within touching distance andwhispers his sweet desires into his wife’s delectable ear, she blushes, turns around and whispers back, “Butamma has said only on second Saturdays...”

Warm Regards,Ajith Kumar Bala Kirshana Pillai
