Dear People of St. Michael's,Those of you who shared in the terrific Baker Wedding Bash last

Friday saw that the main prop for the skit was a re-creation of my office desk. The impression was true-to-life, although the mounds of paper on the skit-desk didn't quite measure up to the real thing.

I can't account for all the paper on my desk, but four stacks or scraps on top today recall the following things worth sharing:

grounding verse in our work with the

Four blank thank-you notes - unfulfilled good intentions -remind me: ● Great party! Other thank-yous may be shared in this Sword, but let me add mine for all of you who surrounded Kara and David Baker with goodwill, joy, generosity and more last Friday evening. A fine moment for me came when one soul observed: "Look at all the generations gathered here!".

A sticky note on which I scrawled 'Muslim' and 'Conf.' reminds me: ● A few eyebrows were raised, I know, when our Confirmation candidates visited the Islamic Education Center in Glendale Heights last Sunday afternoon. I'd suggested at least two inter-faith field trips for the Confirmands. Outcomes for participantsoften include better appreciation of their own faith and better preparation for living in a world of increasing diversity. I welcome follow-up inquiries and encourage your prayers and presence when eleven St. Michael's youth Confirm their Christian faith, May 12, 4:00 p.m., Church of the Redeemer, Elgin.

A note on green paper tucked into the pages of a Hymnalreminds me:● Our fine organist Barbara Wischmeier finalized her agreement this past week to serve as Director of Arts and Music at Trinity Episcopal School, Midland, Texas. Barbara's last Sunday with us at St. Michael's will be June 17. Look for information soon on both the resulting new organist search and plans for a grateful farewell to Barbara.

If you haven't seen here what most interests you, the related paper may be further down on my desk. But write me a note! I'll put it on top and may then be prompted to respond sooner rather than later.

In April we will continue to gather

food for St. Cyprian Food Pantry. This will help refill the shelves that wereemptied at Easter

time. The pantry has reached a new high

of serving 855 families in one

month. So the needcontinues to

increase. Our Food Pantry Fund is also

in need of replenishment. It is used to supplement

needed items that are not donated. Please

Clean Up/Mulch Day will start at 8:00 a.m. (or throughout the day if you can make it). We are looking for folks to tidy up the planting areas and spread mulch around the church properties (simple lunch and beverages provided). Anyone who can lend a hand, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and/or small garden tools, please sign up on the sheetoutside the Community Room by the Adopt-A-Plot display or contact

Kim Lessner at 847-381-2323, ext. 16, [email protected]. - We are also looking to borrow a rototiller for a day on the prior Saturday, May 12th, for flower bed preparation prior to mulching. Can pick up and return but needs to fit in an SUV.

The Covenant was originally signed by then Bishop Daniel Deng Bul, Renk Diocese, and Fr. Al Johnson, then Rector of St. Michael's. It led St. Michael's into partnership with Renk Theological College and then Principal Fr. Joseph Atem Garang, now Bishop of Renk, since Archbishop Daniel's election as Primate of the Episcopal Church of Sudan.

Wednesday Night Eucharist/Dinner/Bible Study...(Give us your Feedback)For the Easter season, we have decided to take a break from the Wednesday night offering of eucharist, dinner and bible study. Over the course of this past year, Wednesday nights have been used in a variety of ways. We want to take the next few weeks to evaluate what has happened and to then develop a plan for what should come next. Whether or not you have been participating, we would love to hear your thoughts on how things have been structured and what we might do moving forward. Given that many of St. Michaels' other groups take a hiatus during the summer and the positive response from last summer's offering, we are considering starting up again in the early summer. That being said, as we begin to lay the groundwork for this, we would really appreciate your feedback.



As we look forward, please consider taking a moment to reflect on the three different elements of our Wednesday program (eucharist, dinner, and study) and offer your feedback. Which, if any, of these elements appeal to you? What would you be excited aboutparticipating in? If we do a bible study, is there a topic or style that you would be particularly excited about? Would you enjoy doing a character study of a particular person in the bible? Or perhapsstudying a particular book in the bible? Would you be interested in seeing something besides a bible study? Any thoughts about the dinner? Or the Eucharist?

Thank You for the FANTASTIC Wedding Bash!Wow, where to start? Thank you, thank you, thank you for theamazing wedding celebration last Friday night. Thank you to those who helped plan, set up and clean up the community room, those who graced us with their acting and singing talents, for all in attendance, and for those who sent their love and support even though they could not attend. As we sat in our living room the next day with piles of goodies for the house, we felt sograteful and overwhelmed by your support and love for us. It also put into perspective how quickly we are getting married, again! As Grace Episcopal in Galena only

holds a small amount of family and friends, we will carry you in our hearts and minds on May 5th. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and prayers throughout this exciting time for us. We feel so blessed and filled with joy to be part of the St. Michael's family. It is a trulyspecial place!

Outreach Grant DistributionApril 15, 2012

Dear St. Michael's Vestry Members,



On Saturday, April 14, the Grant Committee met to review and grant requests for 2012. We received a total of 24 grant applications. We have been allocated $93,000 for 2012 and distributed grants totally $46,200. In addition, vestry generously allocated $15,000 from the2011 surplus. The following grant requests were filled using the 2011 surplus:

Church of the Redeemer ($5000) - to subsidize the cost to send youth on this summer's mission trip. Church of the Redeemer ($5000) - to assist with costs associated with their interim priest (pension funding and program materials)St. Cyprians Food Pantry ($5000) - operating expenses related to food distribution

The funds to Redeemer are intended to be one-time grants to assist them transition from St. Michael's support. This will be discussed with Fr. Lopez. St. Cyprians is constantly in need of funds to support their growing client base. The committee left the option open ofsending additional funds to St. Cyprian in the fall.

Synopsis of the April 23, 2012 Vestry MeetingThe regular monthly meeting of the Vestry convened on Monday, April 23, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in the Undercroft. Fr. Raymond provided an opening devotional, "Speaking the truth in love - how are we doing?", for review, reflection, and brief discussion.

Following approval of the meeting agenda, Little Angels ChristianPreschool Director Caren Hunter and Michele Philips, Vestry Liaison to Little Angels, presented a report on the status of and strategic plan for the Preschool. At the end of the report, Director Hunter noted the "Week of the Young Child" program in which Little Angels is participating this week....to read the entire report click here.
