those she met , a t t e n d i n g u n i v e r s i t y l e c ­

t u r e s , v i s i t i n g s c h o o l s , a r t g a l l e r i e s

and museums, H i s s H i l l o b t a i n e d a v a r i e d

and f a s c i n a t i n g i n s i g h t i n t o Amer i can

S o c i o l o g y . She gave a t h o u g h t f u l and l i b ­

e r a l a n a l y s i s o f t h e Amer i can o u t l o o k as

i t appeared t o h e r , a f o r e i g n e r i n t h e i r

c o u n t r y j but she was c a r e f u l t o s t r e s s

t h a t t h e s e were he r own o p i n i o n s and

t h e r e f o r e sub j e c t t o e r r o r s .

Though handicapped by a severe c o l d ,

M i s s H i l l ' s obv i ous i n t e r e s t i n h e r s u b ­

j e c t , and h e r a p t i t u d e f o r t r a n s m i t t i n g

h e r e n t h us i a s m , a roused everyone p r e s e n t

i n t o a d i s c u s s i o n i n w h i c h p r e j u d i c e s

f e e l i n g a l i t t l e d o u b t f u l as t o t h e c o r r e c t t r a i n i n g f o r t h e j o b , he sought h i s w i f e ' s !

a d v i c e . " L e a r n t o d o o d l e " , was t h e r e p l y . Or Bronowsk i b e i n g a ma themat i c i an was not]

i n t e r e s t i n g p r o p e r t i e s . The q u e s t i o n he asked h i m s e l f was what s o r t o f doodle can be

done wh i thou t t a k i n g t h e p e n c i l o f f the p a p e r . Hav ing proposed such a q u e s t i o n , t h e

l e c t u r e r t h e n , w i t h some d isagreement from t h e a u d i e n c e , d e f i n e d a good mathemat i c i an

as one who can not o n l y s o l v e t h e p r ob l em , but one who t h i n k s t h e prob l em i s a good

one. F o r t h e b e n e f i t o f t h o s e not covered by such a d e f i n i t i o n i t was t h e n shown how

A f t e r a somnambulent s e s s i o n as s e c r e t a r y he became

c a p t a i n i n 1950 , w h i c h a l l o w e d h im f u l l s c o p e f o r h i s

u n r i v a l l e d o r g a n i s i n g a b i l i t y . The C l u b ' s t o u r o f H o l l a n d

l a s t summer was a r ranged by means o f a s i n g l e l e t t e r w h i c h

a r r i v e d a t i t s d e s t i n a t i o n o n l y a s h o r t t i m e a f t e r t h e t eam.

He was h a s t i l y e l e c t e d p r e s i d e n t .

A l t h o u g h somewhat p r e o c c u p i e d w i t h h i s t h e s i s t h i s y e a r

he s t i l l s t r o v e t o t u r n out f o r c o n t e s t s . H a l f t h e team who

remained t o e s c o r t h im t o t h e match w i t h Ox f o rd ( F e l i x 18/2/52)

were de l a y ed t h r e e h o u r s t h r o u g h h i s l a t e a r r i v a l .

H i s c l o s e f r i e n d s w i l l p a r t i c u l a r l y remember h i s c h a r a c ­

t e r i s t i c b l u n t n e s s o f a d d r e s s and h i s a b i l i t y t o bestow ap t
