Naidoc Week at Altona Meadows
The children at Altona Meadows Childcare Centre celebrated NAIDOC week with a number of activities. As pictured above, the children aged between three and five had fun making and painting clapping sticks. Those between two and three discussed NAIDOC-related ideas and the educators in the zero-two room painted handprints with the babies.
National Tree DayWere you one of over a hundred people who attended last years National Tree Day at Newport Lakes? Well, this year National Tree Day is taking place on 27 July at Altona Coastal Park and the focus is on restoring chaffy saw-sedge (Gahnia filum) to the area. The sedge plays an integral part in the future of the Altona Skipper butterfly (Hesperilla flavescens flavescens), an endangered species listed as threatened under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. The population of the Altona Skipper numbered just over a thousand in 1988.
Starting at 10am and finisihing at 1pm, we will be planting over 3,500 tubestock in recognition of National Tree Day. Meet and register at the gate next to the Pines Scout camp. Its an enjoyable social occasion for people of all ages.
Would you like a free tree? Come along to the EnviroCentre at Altona Library and pick one up to celebrate National Tree Day. There is a limit of one tree per person available at the following times: Tuesday 22 July, 3:30 pm to 4.30pm or Thursday 24 July, 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
Budget 2014-15 adoptedThe Council adopted its 2014-15 Budget at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 8 July 2014.
The budget includes a total operating expenditure of $119.5million and $30.6 million in capital works, with a 10 year financial plan put in place. The average rate rise is 4.8 per cent and will allow the Council to maintain existing service levels and renew the citys infrastructure.

Ever wanted to start a book group? Theyre a great way to meet new people, read great books, and share opinions. Come along to an information session where you will learn more about book groups, and we will connect you with like-minded people to start your own book group. The session takes place at Williamstown Library on Tuesday 22 July, 10:30 am to 11.30am.
Long Day Care consultationAre you interested in being part of the decision making process for the Council in your local community? Would you like your opinion and ideas to make a difference? If you said yes to any of the above, Hobsons Bay City Council wants to hear from you.
The Council is holding a community forum on Wednesday 6 August from 7pm at the Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona for all residents to have their say about Councils management of long day care services.
Even if you dont use long day care services, but have an interest in looking at facts and figures and contributing feedback and ideas in relation to Council policy then this is the community forum for you.
The Council wants to give all those who attend the forum access to balanced and accurate information about long day care. We want to give you sufficient time to explore and discuss the issues associated with long day care and then feed back your conclusions.

A new campaign to have more schools built in Melbournes west has been dismissed as a smoke and mirrors tactic.
Altona Labor MP Jill Hennessy launched the campaign last week, saying the west would continue to struggle if more schools were not built to service a growing population.
As development continues to be approved across Melbournes west, there is a distinct lack of adequate investment in education infrastructure, especially at the senior level, Ms Hennessy said. Many local residents are travelling long distances to access schools, dealing with the transport challenges and congestion in the process.
Ms Hennessy urged residents to sign a petition calling for more schools. She said she would continue to advocate for greater funding to ensure we can deliver the education excellence local young people deserve.
But she did not promise schools would be built if Labor was elected in November.
With the state election only four months away, SKY High which has been lobbying for a new secondary school in the Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville (SKY) area for a decade is compiling report cards on the major parties and their commitments to public education.
Labor has vowed to investigate the feasibility of a high school in the Seddon, Kingsville, Yarraville area. The government argues there is no need for the school, citing Education Department studies showing sufficient capacity at other inner-west schools.
SKY High, which presented a petition to local MPs Marsha Thomson and Wade Noonan in April, said residents had snapped up 10,000 of the groups postcards which urge Premier Denis Napthine to act.
SKY High president Melissa Horne said the group had yet to receive a response from Dr Napthine. Weve written and sent emails to the Premier, the Education Minister and to [Western Metropolitan Liberal MP] Bernie Finn and their lack of engagement has been appalling, she said.
Already more than 2000 children attend local primary schools and our statistics show 78 per cent of their families want to send them to a local public secondary school.
Well be encouraging local residents to carefully consider their vote this November.
Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the Labor campaign was an election year hoax.
Theyre not saying what they would do differently, Mr Elsbury said. Yes, you can sign the petition, but what are they going to do?
He said at least five western suburbs schools were closed by Labor when it was last in power.

More than 20 years after he first appeared on our television screens, Jimeoin (above) is still Australias favourite Irishman.
