Dear Fellow Harrisburg Symphony Fans:

Happy holidays! Our fall membership reception had a tease of winter outside, but wonderful warmth indoors. Thank

you to co-chairs Lynn Daneberg and Jill Smeltzer, and hosts Miles and Carole

Gibbons for a delightful event. What a treat to hear Carlin Luz perform. Welcome and thank you to our new

members for choosing the Harrisburg Symphony Society (HSS), and our current

members who fi lled the Gibbons’ home with a din of happiness and enthusiasm

for HSS.

Have a relaxing and very special start to the new year by attending the Musicale. Guest artist Di Wu will perform Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Orchard Hill, the president’s residence at Messiah College.

Thank you to Dr. Kim Phipps for her hospitality. Invitations to the brunch and performance will be mailed shortly, or call Michele Longenderfer or 717.697.6320

or [email protected] for more information.

No hibernating for the 2012 Harrisburg Symphony Showhouse & Gardens

committee. Designers are selected, and the committees with their distinct charges are all hard at work. Cheers to co-chairs Shirley McCormick and Stephanie Otto.

Now and throughout the year, we are thankful for our volunteers who choose

to give the gift of their time through the Harrisburg Symphony Society to support the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. The results of your work are tangible, found on the stage at the Forum and in other

settings throughout our region. Volunteers, please be sure to treat yourselves, too,

over the holiday season.

Thank you. Happy 2012.

Fondly,Julie Sullivan

Fulton Bankpresents

May 19 through June 10, 2012

The Harrisburg Symphony Society is delighted to announce Fulton Bank as the Presenting Sponsor for our sixth Showhouse & Gardens, the premier fundraising event supporting the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra (HSO). Symphony Society events have raised over $1 million for HSO over the years, and we are proud to continue that tradition. We are also excited to unveil the house’s offi cial portrait, seen here, painted and donated by local watercolor artist, Richard Michaelian.

The talented designers and landscapers who will transform this 5,000+ square foot house have been selected and will begin their work in the spring of 2012. Exciting special events are being planned throughout the run of the Showhouse, the Underwriting Committee continues to seek sponsors, and a fabulous preview party and auction will open the house on Friday night, May 18. Our marketing efforts will include traditional advertising as well as the introduction of social media. Look for Showhouse news on Facebook and our website --- coming soon!

Volunteers are still needed for many of our committees. If you would like to be part of this fun and exciting event, please contact co-chairs Shirley McCormick at [email protected] or Stephanie Otto at [email protected] or look for sign up opportunities at future HSO concerts. You can also help by donating old denim jeans and striped oxford shirts, which will be turned into unique gift items to be sold in the boutique. Gently used books and CD’s are also being collected for sale in the boutique. All of these items can be dropped off at the HSO offi ce or contact Boutique Co-Chairs Alison Coppock, [email protected] or April Gift, [email protected].

Tickets for the Showhouse will be available for purchase at HSO concerts, on the HSO website, and at many vendors throughout the area. Special pricing to tour the completed house is also available for groups of 15 or more. Contact [email protected] for details.

Our deep appreciation goes to the underwriters we have received to date.

Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) and the HSO joined forces on October 22-23 to present the world premiere of a staged version of the Saint-Saëns classic, “Carnival of the Animals,” at the Whitaker Center. The audiences were WOWed by the story, the costumes and the music, all combining to make this collaboration a huge success!

The “Night of the Red Dragon” Gala on November 6 was a memorable mix of arts, culture, and fi ne dining at the Hershey Lodge. The Chinese Arts & Cultural Institute provided the stunning music and dance, while Fête Events transformed the Chocolate Ballroom into a palace of Asian delights, with a special touch added by Flowers by Cheryl Ann.
