HRPA YORK REGION CHAPTER ANNUAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT CHERYL POUNDER, GOLD MEDAL OLYMPIC CHAMPION Leadership & Teamwork It’s always about the journey. That’s the message women’s hockey champion Cheryl Pounder seeks to instill in every audience she speaks to. Believing that learning from our successes, as well as our failures, is the key to staying on the path toward excellence, Cheryl shows audiences that true achievement is found on the way to winning gold. Who shows up every day ready to compete, even when it isn't easy? Can we work together? Do we respect and have the ability to help one another? This is where we learn about ourselves and our teammates. We must make a conscious choice to ‘share information’ and help one another because it’s always about the journey! Cheryl Pounder played on six of Canada’s World Championship Hockey Teams, where she was named an All-Star Defense-man in 2005. She was also voted the Top Defense-man at the 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007 Canadian National Hockey Championships. Her greatest career accomplishments are her two Olympic gold medals from the Salt Lake City and Torino Olympic Games. NANCY J. GOWAN, B.H.Sc. (O.T.), O.T. Reg. (Ont.), CDMP Creating a Psychologically Healthy and Safe WorkplaceIn 2015 the World Health Organization noted that depression is the number one cause of disability in the workplace. The Conference Board of Canada survey completed in 2016 noted that mental health is the leading cause of sick leave for Canada. Mental Health conditions have various causes but the psychological risk factors that arise out of the workplace are a prevalent concern. In 2013 the Mental Health Commission of Canada worked with the Canadian Standards Association to develop voluntary National Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace Standards. These standards help organizations to identify, manage and eliminate the 13 psychological risk factors. This session will review each of the psychological risk factors and provide the participants with practical tools to audit the workplace as well as strategies to implement for each of the 13 risk factors. As Human Resources professionals, the participants can use these tools to assist the organization in taking the precautions necessary to maintain a healthy workplace.

Nancy Gowan is a registered Occupational Therapist and Certified Disability Management Professional with experience working in industrial rehabilitation, accommodation and stay at work planning. She is the owner of a national health and disability management company oering support across Canada and now into the US. Over the past 30 years, she has worked in partnership with employers, employees and unions to develop customized strategies that improve employee success and productivity. She has presented at national and international forums on accommodation and disability management and regularly contributes to disability management education through workshops and training programs as well as online newsletters.

DONAL O’REARDON, M.A., M.Litt., H.DipEd., ADR Cert A Deeper Look at Mediation: How to Manage Conflict AuthenticallyConflict is about personalities, so there is no 'one size fits all' method for conflict resolution. In this session Donal O'Reardon will explore the psychology of eective mediation and conflict management. He will discuss how to harness your personality traits in the service of successful conflict resolution. By the end of this session you'll have gained some helpful insights and practical strategies to share with your organization for managing conflict from your authentic self.

Originally from Ireland, Donal O’Reardon has worked in Europe and North America over the past two decades. Now based in Toronto and principal of O’Reardon Consulting, Donal works as a mediator, negotiator, trainer and executive coach. Donal’s approach to conflict resolution is based on the principle that all interpersonal skills are founded on “intrapersonal” skills, the ability to look at and listen to what’s inside us. Donal’s intrapersonal focus means he brings a depth dimension and emotional intelligence ethos to mediation, conflict management and coaching. Donal is particularly interested in the emotional and psychological investment people make in their patterns of behavior and how this impacts their thinking and conflict management skills. He focuses on how these patterns can be safely challenged, or consciously used, in the service of personal and professional development and of lasting agreements.
