HRM STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Name: Paulette Varnado Hometown: Baton Rouge, LA Education: Robert E. Lee High School What do you do in your department, including job title and area? I am an Administrative Coordinator and the HR contact for the Office of Human Resource Management. I maintain the front desk operations by directing customers coming in with benefit and retirement questions to the appropriate personnel. I also handle HRM’s billing, budget, payroll, employment verifications, Westaff assignments and assist applicants applying for LSU jobs. How long have you been with LSU? Almost 13 years! I started in August 1999 in Graphic Services. I moved into Human Resources in September 2010. What has been your most satisfying or rewarding experience as an HR professional? Helping people fill out their forms so that it does not seem so intimidating. What do you like most about working at LSU? I enjoy the team spirit of everyone on campus and having the time off during Christmas break. Tell us something about yourself. During my personal time, I really enjoy fishing and reading.

GEAUX ACT IVE

We hope you will enjoy the newest section of The Happenings, Geaux Active. Here you will find great tips for leading a healthier lifestyle. We encourage our faculty and staff to take an active approach in his/her quest for health and well-being.

If there are any health/fitness topics that you would like to see in upcoming issues, please e-mail them to [email protected].

Want to Burn Some Calories? Get Moving!

Remaining in a seated position throughout the day causes your muscles to weaken. Take some time out of your day to move around. It’s recommended to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, but that doesn’t mean it has to be done consecutively. Try walking around for 10 minutes in the morning, afternoon and evening. Adding in elements like taking the stairs or increasing your pace will help burn some extra calories! Or consider taking a walk around the Parade Grounds at lunch. Two full laps around the Parade Grounds is approximately one mile. Challenge yourself and see how many laps you can do! Plus, getting your work-out in during your lunch break allows you more time for other things when you get home! Healthy Snacks for You and the Lactose Intolerant Try a cup of sliced bell peppers and celery with a ¼ cup of hummus. Be aware that some brands of hummus do contain milk; however there are many brands that do not. As an added bonus, eating these two types of veggies which are high in the plant extract luteolin, may help boost your memory, according to a 2011 study published in The Journal of Nutrition. Adding in some broccoli can also help supply some calcium to those unable to eat milk products. “Healthy Diet Snacks” Redbookmag.com

Another healthy option is baked tortilla chips with mashed pinto beans, which are a good source of calcium. You can also dip your chips in a hearty tomato salsa or some guacamole (without sour cream). “Snacks for Lactose Intolerant” livestrong.com
