WELCOMEI am thrilled you will be living on campus with us! I remem-ber the day I moved into my freshman residence hall - it seems like yesterday! I was a first generation college student excited to meet new friends, build experiences with my roommate and hall-mates, and engage in the college experience. Although I was looking forward to these new opportunities, I was nervous because I did not know what to expect. However, after reaching out to my RA and becom-ing more involved on campus, my anxiety turned into confidence. Living on campus significantly changed my life. Not only was I academically engaged as a Biology major, I also became a student leader for several organizations on campus which opened the door to my career path. Through these experiences I connected with peers from all walks of life, and these people have become life-long friends that I now catch up with on social media. Lastly, and most importantly, I learned a lot about myself in the process.

I share this with you because we all have a story - you will have a story. As you prepare for your first year at Old Dominion University, I challenge you to think about what is important to you - academics, social connections, extra-curricular activities, etc. What experiences will be a part of your story? The decisions you make while in college will significantly impact your future.

Enjoy every moment! Reach out if you need assistance, connect with your peers and faculty, get involved in campus organizations like Residence Hall Association or Community Council, learn beyond your current knowledge, and dedicate time to your academic studies.

Navigating life as a college student will present both challenges and rewards. We are here to assist you and provide resources that will help launch you on your way to success. Best wishes to you and have a successful year!

April Hicks Konvalinka, Ed.D.Executive Director of Housing & Residence LifeOld Dominion University

Page 4: HRL Move-In Guide 2015

LET’S GET PACKINGMove-in is an exciting day, but can also be a lot of work. We recommend you think through what you are bringing and how you are packing. There are elevator(s) in Scotland, England, France, Dominion, Virginia, Ireland, Whitehurst and the ODU Inn, but with high traffic these can take a while to utilize; we suggest you pack in loads that you can carry upstairs and save the elevator trip for the heavy items. This will help save you time and let you get unpacked and settled into your room much faster.

Upon arrival, Housing & Residence Life staff members are here to make your experience the best it can be. When you move in, there will be a bed (lofted if in a triple), dresser, study desk, chair, and closet/wardrobe in your room for each student; this furniture must remain in your residence hall room.

We encourage you to call or e-mail your new roommates prior to move-in to get to know one another and discuss what items you are bringing to the room. By consulting with your roommates, you can reduce overlap of items and determine items that can be shared, which is a great strategy to maximize space in any space (i.e. double, triple, or apartment). In order to make the most of space in the room, it is a good idea for only one person to bring large items. Additionally, you might want to save items to bring later, such as winter clothes. During your conversations with your future roommates be sure to discuss who will bring what: Mini fridges, TV, electronics, microwave [allowed in the Quad and Apartment communities], dishes, etc. Deciding on these things ahead of time will help make the transition to life in a residence hall easier for both you and your roommates.

Page 5: HRL Move-In Guide 2015

The following is a short list of suggested popular items to pack for your new residential space. Always be sure to check the HRL Policies and Procedures (http://bit.ly/hrlpolicies) regarding items that should stay at home.

*Please note: Microwaves are not permitted in Rogers, Gresham, Whitehurst, or the ODU Inn.

SMOKINGSmoking is prohibited inside all of our residential facilities. This also includes traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vaporizers. If you do smoke, you must be at least 25 feet away from the entrances/outside of the building.

PETSWe do allow fish as pets in the residence halls. The maximum size tank you are allowed for fish is 10 gallons. Other pets should stay at home; even just for a quick visit from family or friends.

BICYCLE REGISTRATIONAs part of complying with ordinances of the City of Norfolk, all bikes on campus need to be registered. ODU Police are happy to assist you with registration at either of their locations at University Village Apartments or Powhatan Village Apartments.

LAUNDRY FACILITIESYou will have 30 loads (or 60 starts) each semester of laundry included in your housing fee. These starts are used via your ODU ID card at the laundry facility in your residence hall. Unused laundry loads carry over from the Fall to the Spring semester. You may also add additional funds to your card via the Card Center, located in the Webb Center.

HOUSEKEEPINGOur facilities staff is responsible for cleaning the common areas of the building. We recommend that you bring cleaning supplies for your personal space, including your bathroom.

When securing your bike on campus, use a good U-Lock rather than a chain lock. Its design makes it harder break, leaving your bike more secure.

U LOCK IT!

Page 17: HRL Move-In Guide 2015

DAY OF MOVE-INThis is the first formal opportunity for you to connect with your Resident Assistant (RA) and other residence hall staff members who will help you throughout the year. In these required meetings students will be introduced to community standards, leadership opportunities and much more useful information.

SUNDAY, THE NIGHT BEFORE CLASSESConnect with your Resident Assistant (RA) and other residence hall staff members to learn about community standards, leadership opportunities, and other useful information.

MAINTENANCE REQUESTSFor maintenance or housekeeping services within the Residence Halls please use Maintenance Direct (visit http://bit.ly/oduhrlmaintenance for directions). It is our online resource for submitting non-emergency work requests and is available 24/7. Maintenance Direct will track work requests you have submitted and will also automatically e-mail acknowledgements of receipt of work requests and notifications of any status changes of requests.

FRONT DESK SERVICESFront desks are open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight in each residence hall/residential area*. Visit the front desk for general inquiries, checking out hall equipment, temporary key check outs, reporting facility problems, including those with laundry and vending equipment, picking up packages, cleaning kits, and more.*Note: Gresham Main serves the Gresham Complex and Foundation House residents. Rogers Main serves the Rogers Complex and Nusbaum Apartments residents.

FLOOR MEETINGS

Page 18: HRL Move-In Guide 2015

Internet/WifiGetting connected to the internet is easy. Simply open your web browser and use your Midas ID and password to log in. If you’re having trouble your Resident Assistant would be happy to help you. For additional assistance visit www.odu.edu/its.

CableScrew one end of your video cable into the threaded coax jack on the wall plate. Screw the other end into the appropriate coax connector on your TV. Your TV should be set to CABLE or CATV. Then be sure to run the auto-program or channel search feature in order for your TV to search for and memorize all of the available cable channels.*We recommend that you bring the manual and any remote controls that came with your TV.

Game ConsolesTo connect your computer, gaming or other device to ODU ResNet, you will need to request activation of your wired port by visiting http://ww2.odu.edu/apps/portactivate/. You’ll need to also register your console at http://ww2.odu.edu/apps/gaming. This will activate the internet port in your room and allow your console to bypass the ResNet authentication process. This grants your console wired network access for up to one academic year and will need to be repeated at the start of each Fall semester. You will also need an ethernet cable. You can purchase a cable at any electronics retailer.

*Please note that wireless game consoles, such as the PSP, Nintendo DS, and Wii, are unable to authenticate to the ODU wireless network, and therefore cannot be connected to the Internet on campus. Nintendo Wii users can purchase the Wii LAN Adapter to connect their Wii to the wired network.
