HRCR MINI SPORT CUP STAGE RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

At the open day the 2019 HRCR Mini Sport Cup will be celebrating both sixty years of the iconic Mini and

ten years of the HRCR Mini Cup. We will have several of the previous Championship winning Minis on

display and there will be an opportunity to meet the crews.

The Championship is open to all Classic Mini and Mini derivatives and will again be supported by Mini

Sport of Padiham who provide our competitors with a wide range of products and services including their

workshops and rolling road facility. Our competitors also receive additional product support from

Yokohama Tyres and Penrite Oils.

The format is an 8 round Championship over 7 events, with the Tour of Flanders counting as two rounds.

The best 5 scores to count. The rounds have been selected for their value for money, geographic location

and variety, to provide competitors with a real challenge within a reasonable budget.

In addition to having the Motorsport UK historic classes the Championship will incorporate an open class for Classic stage rally Minis. To encourage participation by younger competitors there will be an award for the highest placed competitor that is aged under 25 at the start of the year.

2019 Guest Car

Next season in the Clubmans it is intended to run a guest car in a similar vein to the one that Martin Phaff ran in

the Ginetta Championship which proved an excellent promotion opportunity.

The car is Martin’s 1968 Cat 1 Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.3, (these cars were only made in '67 + '68 and were amongst the last Lancias built prior to the Company being purchased by FIAT). The car has been well sorted with

a proven track record and recently finished 19th on LeJog which is recognized as Europe's toughest rally!

Matt James editor of MotorSport News has kindly agreed to promote our Championship with a 1/2 page report

after each round together with an advert on the same page which we will be able to offer to our sponsors. Matt

and Martin will be finding the drivers mainly from other areas of motorsport to put in the car and that selection

process will begin in January at the Autosport show on 11th Jan. Our guest will be accompanied by a

Championship winning navigator or as Martin puts it, “if we are unable to sort this ........it'll be me trying to guide them round!”

HRCR Navigators Training Day

This event is being run on the 2nd February at the Ross and District Motor club and will be aimed at first time

competitors who wish to know more about historic regularity road rallies.

The subjects will consist of equipment, basic navigation, terminology and examples. There will also be a vehicle

preparation session which will give advice on vehicle preparation, equipment and eligibility etc.

The afternoon will consist of a hands on navigational route to test new found skills.

Further details and an application form can be found in the news section of the HRCR website.

Start of the Season

By the time this newsletter is published, applications for the 2019 Tour of Cheshire that is taking place on the 2

March should be open. Make sure you get in early as this ever popular rally fills up quickly. Not sure if this is

tempting fate or not but here’s hoping for better luck with the weather this year.

Championship Registration

Registration for the 2019 Clubmans Championship can now take place via the secretary who can be

emailed at [email protected]. Alternatively entries can be made at the HRCR open day at Gaydon

on 12 January. The cost is the same as last year at £25 per crew or £15 for an individual.

Championship and Overall Class winners 2018 The final results are out for the West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Challenge 2018, showing any car which has a good reliable season can be in for a shout of the overall awards. This year the season was curtailed by the cancellation of 4 rounds due to problems with road closures or a lack of an organising committee. For 2019, competitors can be assured that everything possible has been done to make sure this unfortunate situation does not happen again. Congratulations must go to Ken Davis and Alan Jones who have won Category B and officially crowned the overall champions after using their Volvo in the woods and the Cortina to good effect on the asphalt. Peter Ellerby and Jeff Anderson took second overall in what was a frustrating season for the crew from the north east being plagued by a series of mechanical problems. Mike Simpson took Category C on the final event of the year in Killarney with the bonus points of offer, he also started the year with an overall win on the AGBO stages. Jeff Wincott’s efforts on the first couple of rounds of the season was enough to see him crowned category D winner and also the winner of the Shawn Rayner Escort Cup. Maximum points secured on the AGBO and Severn Valley was enough after retirement on the Dixies Challenge brought an early finish to his season. Steven Powell (Hillman Avenger) and Eric Davies (Mini) benefitted by registering for the Old Stager and the Stage Masters championships to finish in second and also won the Miller Oils prizes and various points throughout the year. Regulations for the 2019 series will be available at the HRCR open day at Gaydon on January 12th. . FORTHCOMING HRCR MIDLANDS EVENTS

12 January 11th HRCR OPEN DAY, GAYDON

This year’s theme will be the 60th anniversary of BMC’s Mini (not 6R4 as website says!) so HRCR Mini Cup competitors past and present will take the fore.

As if that was not enough, once again it will see the launch and opening of the entry list for our own Derbyshire Dales Drive will take place at the HRCR Open Day, and assistance will be needed to steward the stand during the day.

Entry to the exhibits at the HRCR Open Day is free to all and for those who want to combine their visit to view the World's largest collection of Historic British cars with over 300 classic cars on display, discounted pre-booked tickets can be purchased by clicking onto the following link using the code MEMBER2019HRCR

19 - 20 Jan VSCC MEASHAM NIGHT RALLY

The Measham Night Rally is one of the greatest challenges for Drivers and Navigators in the VSCC Calendar.

The main rally comprises two loops, totalling approx 140 miles with straightforward, “no tricks” navigation and its entrants will be eligible for the Measham Challenge Cup + Class awards

There is also a concurrent Measham “Lite” Rally that will run over the first half of the main Measham route. It is an event in its own right of approximately 80 miles and its entrants will be eligible for the Measham Mug

What is interesting is that such rallies are now open to Pre-1962 Historic cars so may be of interest to some HRCR Members. All Competitors are encouraged to arrive earlier in the day, when we have been invited into the ‘Quick Reaction Hangar’ at Bruntingthorpe during the afternoon of the event to see the 1950’s Cold War Jets, specifically the ‘Lightnings’ which are kept there and are being restored by enthusiasts, some of whom are VSCC Members of course.

For the last three years, the rally has started from Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire and the 2019 event is no different, the Start, Halfway and Finish all at the Aerodrome. It is an excellent venue, easy to get to from any part of the country, and offers ample trailer parking, undercover scrutineering, fettling facilities and plenty of plotting room. Drinks and hot food will be available on site throughout the event.

Instructions in the first half will be by map reference only (i.e. traditional), whilst the second half will be following a new format that will be easily accessible to all, with the emphasis being on accurate timekeeping. There will also be two sections timed to the second to act as a tie decider. These will be completed on the airfield before heading out on the main route.

MARSHALS - The Organisers would be delighted to welcome any offers to marshal for the event. Please contact the VSCC Competition Department directly via [email protected] or thorough the VSCC Web site www.vscc.co.uk
