ONCE UPON A TIME

Page 5: hpeq student profile

HPEQ Student is a network of Indonesian health professional

student organizations focusing on issues related to health

professional education quality. Initiated by 8 student

organizations from 7 health professions, the network was

established at the “Indonesian Health Professional Students

Summit” in Jakarta, November 19th 2010.

The summit itself was held to answer the need for a proper

opinion channeling and aimed to create a forum for Indonesian

health professional students to convey their aspiration

regarding their education system. The summit was then ended

with the signing of the Indonesian Health Professional

Students’ Declaration on Students’ Role in Health Professional

Education, addressing two main points: student participation in

education governance and interprofessional education.

TRANSFORMING MIND

Page 8: hpeq student profile

The declaration resulted from the summit was not merely words read

out loud to impress those who hear them. It was a manifesto of the spirit

of togetherness among health professional students and a big step of

hope to make changes in students’ role in education governance.

For the students, the declaration changed their way of seeing

themselves: they are no longer an object, but instead, the agent of

change of their own education. It has also transformed the way we see

health professionals: we are one big team!

And thus, the declaration has attracted many experts in Indonesian

health professional education, including the Directorate General of

Higher Education, the Ministry of Education and Culture. Through the

Health Professional Education Quality (HPEQ) Project, in 2011 the

government started to support programs and activities of the student

network, which was later known as HPEQ Student.

THE FIRST BUDS OF SPRING

Page 12: hpeq student profile

Year 2011 was the critical phase for HPEQ Student. Like a seed

struggling to bud, the students faced dry soils and hard rains. But with

the support from the student organizations and HPEQ Project, HPEQ

Student was finally able to reach a success by conducting two national-

scale studies which were very crucial for their advocacy. The first study,

which was on students’ participation in the improvement of health

professional education, was conducted online, introducing the power of

technology to channel students’ aspiration. The second, which was on

interprofessional education, managed to provide the first national

evidence on students’ and teachers’ perception and readiness for

interprofessional education. The two studies were then presented on

the 2nd HPEQ International Conference and gained interests from many.

Page 13: hpeq student profile

At the conference, HPEQ Student also launched the book “What Health

Professional Students Ought to Know" written in an easily

understandable language to talk to students about the quality of their

education. The book described the shortcomings of Indonesian health

professional education system, explained what the students could do

for improvements, and encouraged the readers to participate. The book

also emphasized the importance of student advocacy at the local level

and the need for implementing interprofessional education.

In one session of the conference, HPEQ Student held a small working

group discussion to capture the aspirations of 200 Indonesian health

professional students to find out what problems existed in the education

system of the seven professions. The result was a list of problems and

recommendations to be presented to the stakeholders during an

advocacy process later on.

GROWING STRONG

In 2012, the HPEQ Student has grown bigger. With more students

being aware of its existence, the network had more manpower to carry

out new programs. HPEQ Student then set out five areas of work,

which include Advocacy, Research, Media and Campaign, Training, and

Monitoring and Evaluation.
