HPC-TVHIGH PLAINS COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
Started 7 years ago as a project – a brainstormed idea
“Friday Morning Storm Warning”
Became a Digital Media Class taught as an elective
Open to our high school students – fits perfectly into the middle school setting
Class meets daily as part of our class schedule
HPC-TV 2009-2012 Original format was to pre-record each segment and studio scene
Was not efficient – too much time lost recording studio clips
Uploading an entire show was time consuming and often didn’t look professional as a final product
Great results but not as efficient – accountability not there.
HPC-TV 2013-2015 Live Broadcast of our weekly show
13-18 minute average show time
Live portions – Intro In-Studio Interviews Lead ins Weekly Announcements Closing Commentary
WHY LIVE TV? Accountability – get it done right the first time
The show builds to Friday and it has to be produced and prepared leading up to that day.
Improves students ability to speak, think, and process on the fly
Everyone has a role on Friday
Anchor, Interviews, Production, Hallway Monitor, Camera, Sound
Who Participates in HPC-TV? We have a mix of 9th-12th graders
Cap the class at 8
Rely on our outgoing students to be “Live”
Techy students produce the show – Bells and Whistles
This year we have 4 freshmen participating in the class. Basic skill levels Learning as they go Behind the scenes
Needed Equipment To “Go Live” A Quiet Place to Produce the Show
Green Screen (Not needed but cool!)
Camera
A great microphone or two
Computer (Updated and Working Well)
Broadcasting Program
Challenges With Going “Live” A student may “FREEZE” in front of the camera
Producer of show must nail it! Get you in and out of commercials, features, etc.
Student roles need to be developed over time. Not everyone is good at every role right away
Relying on Technology to Work! Internet, Microphones, Computer, Camera
Expectations of our Students Prepare each week for Friday
Segments, Commercials, Script
Participate during the week and during the Live Broadcast
Take it serious – we have both a live audience and an archived audience
Represent High Plains Community Schools the right way
