Current situation Diversity has been an important topic in the national conversation for several years. While the topic has been discussed and debated in every segment of society, the world of business has found solid benefits to making diversity a value.

In 2013, Harvard Business Review published research results and concluded that the findings “constitute a powerful new dimension of the business case for diversity.”4 Gallup authored “The Business Benefits of Gender Diversity,” and Entrepreneur magazine included an article, “The Myriad Benefits of Diversity in the Workplace.” The theme rang throughout corporate America, and companies incorporated diversity values, goals, and strategies.

HP has a long history of leadership in Diversity and Inclusion (D&I). From starting one of the first LGBTQ employee resource groups over 30 years ago, to ranking as a top company for women since 1990, D&I has been a big part of HP’s innovative culture.

Today, diversity and inclusion in gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, ability, military status, age, and many other factors, are what fuel our innovation. At HP, diversity and inclusion is a business imperative.

HP is an integral part of the conversation and, more important, drives action and change. And the company holds itself accountable and measures ongoing results. HP has innovative diversity programmes and is recognised in the tech industry for its diverse leadership teams, retention statistics for diverse hires, inclusive recruiting strategies, and it leads the pack.5

Benefits of diversity center on reaching a company’s market more effectively, understanding new markets better, and bringing different perspectives to the table. A diverse leadership and workforce lead to greater understanding and potential growth.

“HP is committed to diversity and inclusion. We value, respect, and support all of our employees. We aspire for every HP employee to bring everything that makes them unique as individuals to work each and every day.”

Tracy Keogh, Chief Human Resources Officer

Did you know?

In FY16,

42% percent of what we spent on patent development with outside counsel in the US, was with firms owned by women or minorities.

HP ActionHP Inc. has been both proactive, and widely acclaimed as a leader, in modern day diversity actions in support of HP’s employees, suppliers, partners, and customers.

As we formed our company, diversity was on the forefront. We started at the top with the most diverse board of directors for a US tech company (42% women and 42% minorities). Through an active and progressive Global Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board, sponsored by Tracy Keogh (Chief Human Resources Officer) and Lesley Slaton Brown (Chief Diversity Officer) and comprised of senior leaders from across the company, we have leadership oversight and guide our strategy as we reinvent the standard for Diversity and Inclusion. Under this Advisory Board, HP’s “BIG” Strategy is being driven in our work. This focuses our efforts to provide a workplace where employees Belong, Innovate, and Grow.

HP carried out a number of actions and set various systems in place in order to build on the diversity of its workforce and support our inclusive culture. In 2016, we launched Unconscious Bias: Unleashing Innovation training for all hiring managers and Human Resources. This in-person training provides the knowledge needed to take personal action and help remove bias from our systems and structure. HP’s Cultural Competence program trains employees to develop cultural thinking skills as part of a global workforce. Recently HP introduced the Reinvent Mindsets campaign, which aims to spark behavioural change and demonstrate action by shining a light on difficult topics, such as unconscious bias.

Our Business Impact Networks (BIN, formerly called Employee Resource Groups) help to drive diversity and inclusion at all levels. In 2018, approximately 13,000 BIN members participated in events across 25 countries.

HP continues to partner and promote opportunity for girls and underrepresented groups in STEM+C (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computing) by annually supporting Hour of Code activities. Thousands of HP employees have volunteered, teaching computer science and basic coding to over 20,000 K-12 students in underserved communities globally through Hour of Code in over 140 schools and community centres. We also strategically partner with Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and others.

31% women executives (director and above) in HP, as of October 2018.

Our commitment At HP, we believe in the power and promise of committing to a more diverse and inclusive workplace. And we’re proud of the progress we’ve made, with the most diverse board of directors of any technology company, among other things, and the awards and recognition we’ve won because of it.

But we are far from satisfied.

That’s why we’re continuing our efforts and literally reinventing the standard for diversity and inclusion at HP. We are not merely correcting the underrepresentation of women, people of colour, and other minorities in our workforce and among our partners and suppliers, we are creating models of behavior—and role models.

We call this new journey “Reinvent Mindsets” because we want to make it clear that just as our business reinvents how our customers live, work, and play, we are also reinventing how we think about diversity and inclusion. Reinvent Mindsets comprises ongoing internal training, new measurement tools, and other efforts, but focuses on two areas we think haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. Lesley Slaton Brown, Chief Diversity Officer, Global Diversity & Inclusion
