Course introductionThis course educates on the laser printing print-technology, hardware design, supply, and solution innovations that help differentiate HP products in the black and white and color laser printing market. The objectives of the course are as follows. Lets begin by explaining the basic laser printing image formation process. This will help set the stage for our discussion of how HP innovations improve this process.

The basics Static electricityThe primary principle at work in a laser printer is static electricity, the same energy that makes clothes in the dryer stick together or a lightning bolt travel from a thundercloud to the ground. Static electricity is simply an electrical charge built up on any insulated object. Since oppositely charged atoms are attracted to each other, objects with opposite static electricity fields cling together. A laser printer uses this phenomenon as a sort of temporary glue. Keeping that simple concept in mind, lets now review the six-stage image formation process used in laser printers.

Six stage processMost laser printers follow a basic image formation process that involves six stages. These six stages are cleaning, conditioning, writing, developing, transferring and fusing. Note that for color images, some of these stages are performed up to four times. The color image formation process is described at the end of this lesson. Image formation process overview Before we examine each stage individually, lets take a look at the overall image formation process. Cleaning stage, conditioning stage, writing stage, developing stage, transferring stage and fusing stage. Now lets take a closer look at what happens in each of the six stages. 1. Cleaning Stage During the cleaning stage, the cleaning blade removes any excess toner from the print drum. This excess toner is stored in the waste toner receptacle within the toner cartridge. 2. Conditioning Stage During the conditioning stage, the drum is given a total positive charge by the charging roller, a roller with an electrical current running through it. This prepares the print drum to receive an image.

3. Writing Stage During the writing stage, the image is written to the print drum. As the drum revolves, the printer shines a tiny laser beam onto a mirror that reflects the laser beam onto the drum. The laser beam turns on and off to create one dot at a time as it sweeps across the print drum. In this way, the laser draws the letters and images to be printed as a pattern of negative electrical charges. 4. Developing Stage With the pattern is set on the drum, the drum is rolled through a reservoir of positively charged toner -- a fine, black powder. Since it has a positive charge, the toner clings to the negatively discharged areas of the drum, but not to the positively charged background. 5. Transferring Stage During the transferring stage, the image on the print drum is transferred to the media. With the powder pattern affixed, the drum rolls over a sheet of paper and the paper pulls the toner powder away. As the media moves past the transfer assembly, the electrically grounded static eliminator removes any remaining charges from the media. This allows the media to separate from the print drum's surface. 6. Fusing Stage The fusing stage has two purposesto melt the toner and to bond the toner to the media. A heating element heats the fusing roller. As media passes under the fusing roller, the toner is melted. The pressure roller holds the media firmly against the fusing roller to ensure that the toner bonds to the media. The printed media exits the printer into the output tray.

Color laser printingHow is color laser printing technology different from black and white? Essentially, color printers work the same way as monochrome printers, except they go through the entire printing process four times -- one pass each for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. By combining these four colors of toner in varying proportions, the full spectrum of colors can be generated. How is this done? There are several different ways. Four pass carousel With a four pass carousel configuration, the printer has four toner and developer units on a rotating wheel, or carousel. This method of printing starts by placing one color plane -Cyan, Magenta, Yellow or Black - on the belt. The belt continues rotating and the toner cartridge carousel is rotated

to the next color. At this stage, the second color plane is placed on the belt. This process continues until all color planes are placed on the belt and the image is complete. The image is then transferred to the printing media (paper, transparency, etc) which passes through the rest of the engine to the output paper tray. This technology is for users who print mostly black and white, and some color. Fast black and white speed is the highest priority. Four pass technology is older and less expensive than single pass technology and is used in entry-level devices. Single pass in-line For faster color printing, some printers utilize single pass in-line technology which adds all four colors to the belt in one pass. After the image is placed on the belt, it is then transferred to the printing media and processed by the print engine. This technology results in faster color printing than the four pass process does. Single pass in-line, direct to media The single pass in-line, direct to media method places all for color planes directly onto the media during one pass. Of the three technologies, this one results in the fastest color printing.

HP innovationsNow that you understand the basics of the imaging phase of the laser printing process, well explain some laser printing innovations developed by HP. The point to remember is that these innovations help HP continue to deliver the whole solution, not compromising product quality or features to hit a lower price point. HP Instant-on technologyIn the past, laser printers used metal cylinders for fusing, or melting, toner to paper. Those metal fusers were dense and therefore took a long time to heat up. And once they were hot, they stayed that way while the printer was on. This technology resulted in:

A longer wait for first page out, and Wasted energy since the fuser had to be kept hot while the printer was on.

HP LaserJet printers now use a film cylinder for fusing and a ceramic heating element to provide the heat. Because the film is so thin, it heats up very quickly resulting in time savings and energy savings. Time savings, because HP LaserJet printers with Instant-on technology can come out of Powersave mode and finish a three to four-page document before most other printers start printing. That means, users spend less time waiting for output. Energy savings, because warm-up time is eliminated and the fuser does not need to be kept hot between print jobs, so the printer consumes less energy and produces less wear on the engine. Now lets take a look at another laser printing technology developed by HP HP ImageREt.

HP ImageREtOne important topic relative to color production is dots per inch, or dpi. Its important to know that when manufacturers advertise dpi numbers like 1200 dpi or 2400 dpi, they are specifying addressability only one factor in the imaging chain. But there are other important factors for achieving maximum print quality. Development, transfer, and fusing also play significant rolls in the overall print quality of an image. In fact, HP printers printing at 600 dpi with ImageREt 2400 produce image quality equal to or superior to binary printers printing at a stated 2400 dpi. Now lets find out why. ImageREt 2400 does not mean that a printer prints at 2400dpi. ImageREt is a term used in the marketing of HP printers to describe the imaging advances of a printer using specific image enhancing technology.

Old technology Binary imagingWith the old technology, called binary imaging, individual toner dots were placed sideby-side to create the impression of different colors. For example, cyan and yellow toner dots were placed very close together to create green. With magnification, you can actually see the individual blue and yellow dots side-by-side. Binary imaging places a single-sized dot in a fixed position in each cell. The dot is either on or off. If on, can only be one of four primary colors cyan, magenta, yellow or black. To increase resolution from, say, 600 dpi to 1200 dpi, the printer prints more, smaller dots. But this can create performance issues because increasing the dpi increases the size of the print job resulting in increased memory requirements and network traffic. With binary imaging, the processing system is configured to print in default mode. When switched to best quality mode, the system can experience performance issues and slow print speed by half or more. Whats more, single sized dots result in jagged edges and lower-quality images.

New technology HP ImageREtTo counter the performance and print quality issues inherent with binary imaging, HP has developed ImageREt, or Image Resolution Enhancement technology. HP ImageREt produces professional-looking color documents through a suite of technologies including multi-level printing, adaptive halftoning, and color plane registration, or trapping, to name a few. Multi-level printing Show Unlike binary printing which places different colored toner dots side-by-side to create color, multi-level printing controls color by combining up to four colors within a single dot and by varying the amount of toner in a given area.

Adaptive halftoning Adaptive halftoning helps produce sharp edges for text and graphics by positioning various sizes of dots to closely match the ideal profile. The result is a clean edge. In contrast, binary technology uses a collection of single-sized dots which results in fuzzy edges. How does adaptive halftoning work? Adaptive halftoning provides for changes in dot size, with smaller dots filling in the spaces between larger dots. It achieves this by taking advantage of the new smaller HP toner particle and dynamically switching between 600 x 2400 and 600 x 600 dpi, as needed, to provide the highest print quality with lowest memory usage. Since print files generated with this technology are usually smaller than files created with traditional highresolution print technologies, users experience faster file transfer and faster printing. Additionally, printers using ImageREt technology have only one print mode, best quality, so unlike with binary imaging technology, the processing system is always able to handle the print job without experiencing performance issues. Color Plane Registration Trapping Color plane registration, or, trapping is achieved by overlapping one darker color over an adjacent lighter color. Trapping allows HP printers to prevent white edges from showing up around text printed on colored backgrounds. HP ImageREt achieves this by detecting potential alignment trapping problems and correcting them by adding more background color under the edges of the darker text.

Automatic calibrationThe final print-technology innovation we will discuss is automatic calibration. HP LaserJet printers offer automatic calibration as opposed to the tedious manual calibrations that need to be performed with some competing devices. Calibration technologies for color density and color plane registration adjust the HP Color LaserJet behavior to keep it performing optimally and consistently. Intelligent calibration and shorter, less frequent cleaning cycles minimize interruptions and pauses in printing and result in fast printing over the life of the printer.

Hardware design innovationsWeve just examined several HP laser print-technology innovations. Now lets examine the hardware design innovations that make HP LaserJet printers more efficient to use and maintain than competing devices. Single point of access offers just one convenient location for clearing jams and replacing supplies. The easy-access-to paper path reduces help desk and service calls. Single-pass, inline process adds all four colors to the belt before placing the image on paper. This is faster than the four-pass process. Compact, space-saving, vertical design creates a smaller footprint making HP LaserJets easier to move and the perfect weight for desktops. Fewer replacement parts means HP LaserJets generally require significantly fewer replacement parts than competing devices, often only one. Competing laser printers require replacement of up to 28 parts. Fewer replacement supplies means HP LaserJets have fewer supplies to replace throughout their life. Unlike competing printers, many HP devices just require the replacement of tonernothing else. Finally, many HP LaserJet printers come with extra toner in the box.

Supplies innovationsIn addition to the print technology innovations and the hardware design innovations just described, HP offers innovative supplies including cartridges, toner and paper. Lets begin by discussing innovative HP LaserJet Smart Print Cartridges.

HP LaserJet Smart Print cartridgesHP LaserJet print cartridges are not simple canisters of ordinary toner, they are like the finely tuned engine of the printer. HP LaserJet print cartridges are produced under the highest manufacturing standards with some 48 quality checks during the process. Customers who replace this engine with something less than HP will not get the same results they came to expect with their original HP LaserJet print cartridge. What makes them smart? Each genuine HP print cartridge with smart printing technology has a special memory chip called an e-label that stores cartridge data such as model number, date of manufacture, and capacity as well as usage information including the percentage of toner remaining and pages printed per cartridge. The firmware updates the e-label on a perpage basis and provides this information to a web server. The data can then be accessed by a variety of supply management software tools like the Embedded Web Server, HP Easy Printer Care or HP Web Jetadmin. The HP Print Cartridge comprises 70% of the printing system, including the imaging drum, charge roller, toner supply hopper, developer roller, and waste toner remover. The other 30% of the printing system includes the laser and electronics and the paper path. Since the print cartridge is 70% of the printing system, with every HP LaserJet cartridge customers essentially get a new printer engine.

HP ColorSphere tonerWeve just illustrated that the HP print cartridge is much more than simply a toner containerbut theres also a big difference in the toner thats inside. Smooth toner is better than off-brand jagged-edged toner, and the smooth, round, chemically-grown HP toner produces the crisp, colorful pages that people expect with their HP printouts. How is HP toner different? HP color toner is grown using a special chemical process that creates spherically shaped toner particles. Particles are extremely consistent in size and shape, ensuring precise placement of colors. In contrast, other brands crush a solid mass of resin and dyes into tiny particles, which create jagged, irregular shapes. These particles do not line up evenly on the page and can create blurry, inconsistent images. Chemically grown color toner provides many benefits. Here are a few. More colors The extremely consistent size and shape of HP ColorSphere toner particles allow more precise placement of toner particles on the page, which enables production of a broader color gamut - up to 22 percent more colors than with the previous generation of toner. Fade-resistant color Not only do text and images come out with sharper definition with HP toner, the colors are richer as well.
