HP LaserJet P1102w Configuration

Note: If you have already installed and configured the printer, and set it to use a static IP address on one computer, skip to ”Install Printer on Second and Subsequent Laptops” on page 18 for instructions on installing the printer on additional laptops.

Importance of Static IP Address for Printers When a printer is first installed to a computer, its IP address is noted. If that address changes, the computer will be unable to print to that printer without having to reinstall the printer. To avoid issues relating to changing printer IP addresses, the printer should be assigned a static IP address which never changes. Every computer on the network can then use that address to direct jobs to the printer.

Restore factory settings 1. Turn printer off 2. Make sure the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in. 3. Hold down the wireless button and the cancel (x button) as you turn on the power switch. Don’t

release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.

Download HP Installation Software 1. Download “HP LaserJet Pro P1100, P1560, P1600 Series Full Feature Software and Driver” at

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1102-printer-series/4110394/model/4110306.

2. Ensure that the printer is not connected to the computer with a USB cable. 3. In Windows Explorer, double click on the downloaded file,

hp_LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution-v20120831-50157036_SMO.exe. Note: The download file will extract files to a directory named” LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution” in the root directory of the C: drive; this is very odd behavior.

Install the Printer Using the Downloaded HP Software 1. Locate the folder in the root directory of the C: drive. Scroll down to HpSetup.exe then double

click it:

2. Select “Advanced Install” then press the “Next” button:


3. Accept the terms in the license agreement then press the “Next” button:

4. Review the HP Privacy Policy then press the “Next” button:


5. Deselect “Install HP Customer Participation Program”:

6. Select “HP LaserJet Professional P1100w Series” from the list of printers, then press the “Next” button:


7. Select “Configure to print over the Wireless Network” then press the “Next” button:

Installation will begin:

8. When prompted, connect the USB cable between the computer and the printer, then press the “Next” button:


9. After connecting the printer, the “Wireless Configuration Utility” will appear. Press the “Next” button:

10. The “Wireless Discovery Method” window appears. Select “Automatic” discovery then press the “Next” button:


11. After some time, the printer will display a dialog confirming that it has obtained wireless credentials from the wireless network. Confirm that the correct wireless network is selected, then press the “Next” button:


12. After some time, the configuration utility will be successful:

Disconnect the USB cable from the printer. Be sure “Print Test Page” is selected, then press the “Finish” button. The Windows Printer Test Page will print the DHCP-assigned IP address of the printer. You will need this address to configure the printer to use a static IP address.

Assign Static IP Address 1. Note the IP address printed on the Windows Printer Test Page. If you do not have this page,

print a configuration page by pressing and holding the Cancel (X button) on the printer until the Ready light blinks.

2. Open a Web browser and type the IP address of the printer into the browser’s address bar:

The Information page of the printer will be displayed.


3. Select the “Networking” tab, then select Manual IP, then enter an IP address that is outside the DHCP range of the Tax-Aide router. For example, if the DHCP range of the router is 192.168.234.50 to 192.168.234.100, you may set the static IP address of the printer to 192.168.234.20, as shown below. Press the “Apply” button:

4. After setting the static IP address, you will be required to enter a new IP address in the browser’s address bar to view the printer configuration.

5. Type the static IP address into the browser’s address bar to confirm that the IP address has changed correctly:


Update Windows Printer Settings for the Static IP Address 1. Press the Windows Start button then select settings (the gear). 2. Select Devices (Bluetooth, printers, mouse), then select “Printers and Scanners”. Locate

the HP P1102w printer in the list of installed printers. Click on the name of the printer, then click the “Manage’ button:

3. Click on “Printer Properties”:


4. Select the Ports tab. Note that the IP address selected for the port is the old DHCP address, not the new static IP address. Ensure the old port is selected, then press the “Delete Port” button:

5. Press the “Add Port” button. Select “Advanced TCP/IP Port Monitor” then press the “New Port” button:


6. The “Add Advanced TCP/IP Port Wizard” dialog is displayed. Press the “Next” button”

7. In the Add Port dialog, select IPv4 Address then enter the static IP address for the printer. Check the “Always print to this device even if its IP Address changes” box. Press the “Next” button:


8. On the next screen, press the “Finish” button:

9. Press the “Close” button:

10. The list of ports will now include the static IP address and will be selected. Uncheck the “Enable the bidirectional support” checkbox. Press the “Apply” button, then the “OK button”


11. Return to Windows Settings page and print a test page to confirm that the printer is set up correctly. If desired, press the “Set as Default” button to make the printer the default Windows printer:


Update the Printer Firmware Two flavors of the P1102w printer exist, CE657A and CE658A. The CE658A version can definitely be updated with new, KRACK-free firmware. It is not certain whether the CE657A can be updated. (The NTC is working with Hewlett-Packard on this issue.) For now, the CE657A version printer is not to be used wirelessly.

Download Firmware Update Utility 1. Download “HP LaserJet P1102w, P1109w Firmware Update Utility” at

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1102-printer-series/4110394/model/4110306.

2. In Windows Explorer, double click on the downloaded file, LJP1100_P1560_P1600_FW_Upgrade_20180302.exe.

3. The firmware update utility will display a list of installed printers that can be updated. Press the “Update All” button:

4. The update will take a few minutes. When complete, this dialog will display:


Install Printer on Second and Subsequent Laptops The process for installing the P1102w printer on subsequent laptops is simpler. The printer should already be set up with a static IP address, and configured to connect to the Tax-Aide wireless network.

1. Copy the “LJP1100_P1560_P1600_Full_Solution” folder from the original laptop to a USB thumb drive, then move the thumb drive to the new laptop.

2. Locate the folder in the USB thumb drive. Scroll down to HpSetup.exe then double click it:

3. Select “Advanced Install” then press the “Next” button:

6. Deselect “Install HP Customer Participation Program”:

7. Select “HP LaserJet Professional P1100w Series” from the list of printers, then press the “Next” button:

8. Select “Connect to a configured Wireless Network Printer” then press the “Next button:


9. Select “Select from a list of detected printers” then press the “Next” button:


10. If it is displayed, click “Next” on the “Firewall Detected” message:

11. Select the detected printer then press the “Next” button:


12. Press “Next” on the Confirm Network Settings button:

13. On the “Product Settings” dialog, select “Disable Direct Print” then press the “Next” button:

14. On the “Software Installation Complete” dialog, uncheck “Register your product”, check “Print Test Page”, then press the “Next” button”


15. Press the “Finish” button. (Do not download the XPS driver.)


16. On the “HP ePrint Setup” page, press the “No” button:
