If you’ve ever tried to lose weight before, you’ve probably discovered more diets and “secret tips and tricks” than you can ever remember. The question is: how many of them really worked? _______________________________ I bet by the time you’ve finished this guide some marketing hype man has cooked up a fresh new diet which promises a new you but is simply an old failure with a fresh coat of paint. It’s frustrating trying to navigate this infinite sea of weight loss advice, and I don’t blame the people that fall for bad diets, I blame the people that push them. But with the right education, you can make educated decisions. In the last section we cleared up the basics of a diet, so now let’s take a look at five common diets out there today and which can actually get you significant, healthy and sustainable results.

1. The Low-Fat Diet: There’s a simple fact about fat: it’s tasty stuff. We’re naturally wired to crave it because it’s such an efficient energy reserve, so we just can’t help finding fatty foods delicious. Of course, the abundance of fat available and our less active modern lifestyles is a dangerous cocktail for putting on the pounds, as we store fat for energy that we’ll never use. It seems to be common sense that to lose weight you lose the fat, but since fat is what makes food so delicious, the companies who produce low fat or zero fat food have to find other ways to make their diet products appetising. The most common way of doing this is adding sugar, which turns low fat diets into get fat diets. All this added sugar messes with your blood sugar levels, making it harder to manage weight control. Low fat diets are really high carb diets and can often cause fatigue, mood swings and sugar cravings. Another problem with low fat diets is that they don’t discriminate the good fats from the bad fats. There are essential fats that your body needs to function properly, and depriving yourself from these leads to low energy, allergies, yeast problems as well as dry skin, hair and nails. Doesn’t sound like a diet you’ll want to stick with, does it?

2. Crash Diets: If food is where the weight on your waistline comes from, it seems natural that cutting food will trim the inches. Crash diets apply this principle to the extreme, convincing people to reduce their caloric intake to sub-1000 levels, sometimes going as far as promoting starvation and “no food days”. The problem is, cutting calories is a case of diminishing returns. Once your caloric intake drops below 1000, your body assumes that it’s under attack (it is being starved after all!) and slows down the metabolic rate by as much as 45% to preserve energy. Simply put, the more you cut your calories the less you gain from it. “As weight falls, the metabolic rate always falls too.” Dr. Marks, Cambridge University In the short term you can lose around 7lbs of body fluid and, if you’re lucky, maybe 2lbs of body fat a week as well, accounting for an impressive 10lbs in two or three weeks. But the minute you start eating again that weight will pile back on in no time, since your metabolic rate slowed, meaning you now need even less food to put on weight. Also, when calories are reduced too much your body will start to burn through its lean body mass, losing you precious muscle, which further reduces your metabolic rate and the natural fat-burning capabilities of your body. The sudden, obvious weight loss of crash dieting combined with how rapidly the weight returns makes it a match made in heaven for the diet businesses. Many customers will repeat their crash diets and fall into the yo-yo dieting pattern, repeating the cycle an average of three times a year. Not only is crash dieting entirely unsustainable, it prevents you from enjoying a normal life and is ultimately dangerous for your health.

3. Calorie Counting: Calorie counting is now so commonplace it’s difficult to find any fitness or dieting regime that doesn’t include it in some capacity. Calories are placed on food packets and menus as if they’re the be all and end all of weight loss. It would be great if it was just a numbers game but calorie counting is a flawed concept. When you start limiting your calories below your recommended daily allowance your cortisol levels start ramping up. Cortisol is a stress hormone which increases your appetite (especially for fatty and sugary foods) and starts sending fat to your belly. Numerous studies have found a proven link between cutting calories and cortisol production, such as a study at the University of California where levels rose in all female subjects who limited their calories. Here’s how I explain the calorie counting conundrum:

• One banana will add around 100 calories to your daily count, so if you just cut out your daily banana for a whole year you would end up losing an amazing 36’500 calories.

• Now, 1lb of fat is around 3500 calories, so in just a

year of one less banana a day you would have lost 10.4 lbs.

• In five years, you’d lose 52 lbs,

• 104 lbs in ten years

• and after fifteen you’ll have vanished completely!

As you’ve guessed, that math is totally wrong. It doesn’t take into account that your body is a complex self-protecting system that does everything it can not to starve. Cutting back the calories simply means your body will make it harder for you to lose weight. Calorie counting is working against your body when you want to be working with it. 4. High Protein Diet: High protein diets are all the rage these days and everyone’s cutting carbohydrates like they’re poison. It seems like the ideal diet for dedicated carnivores out there, but there are some potentially disastrous downsides that need to be taken into account before you start throwing away all your pasta. Too much protein in your diet leads to the formation of toxic substances called ketones, especially if you’re not eating enough calories and your body starts burning protein as fuel. This isn’t easy for the body to accomplish, so weight loss can occur but at a cost. You see, proteins contain amino acids, which have to be neutralised by the body through the release of calcium from the bones. This occurs naturally all the time without any adverse effects, but a high protein diet can send protein levels beyond what the body has the capacity to deal with. You could find your bones drained of their vital calcium,

increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis. High protein diets are popular because they can give rapid results, there’s no doubt about it. But these results are achieved through an unnatural, potentially toxic process which can lead to unhealthy eating disorders and long term damaged health. 5. The Balanced Diet: For most people, the word “diet” implies a short term fix. Just switch what you’re eating and watch the pounds melt away! But this attitude leads to disappointment when the results aren’t as revelatory as promised or the weight comes back with a vengeance.

The Truth – which some people find hard to deal with – is that long term gains require long term change.

The good news is that – as long as you change your mindset – a long term, balanced, healthy diet is the easiest to maintain. Because you’re giving your body everything it naturally needs you can easily integrate it into your life and you’ll feel better than ever. As an exercise and nutrition expert, it was a natural goal for me to perfect the balanced diet. After all, there’s no magic trick to weight loss, it’s simple science. Actually, it’s very complex science, but putting it into action is simple!

It’s a ratio that probably flies in the face of a lot of your accepted wisdom for weight loss – I’m sure that 30% fat has raised your eyebrows! If you’re overweight, chances are your body is programmed to turn food into fat instead of energy. In the long run, simply counting calories and avoiding fat won’t help. In fact, it could harm you. As we’ve seen above, crash dieting can reduce your metabolism, and thus your fat burning capabilities, by as much as 45%. I understand why people assume losing fat means cutting fat, it seems to be common sense! But remember that your body is a network of incredibly complex processes relying on you giving it what it needs to work correctly, and that includes managing your weight. What you need to do is reprogram your body to burn fat. And the good news is you can start to do this in just 30 days. Where most people go wrong is far too much carbohydrate. They’re our main source of energy and are found in abundance in nearly all commonly available food. As with all nutrients, they’re essential for our wellbeing, but too many carbohydrates will send your blood sugar, and therefore your insulin, to dangerous levels.

Insulin: You’ve probably heard of insulin before; it’s released by your body when there is too much sugar in your blood stream. A high blood sugar level can cause severe harm to your body if left elevated for too long. For this reason, the second your blood sugar level rises too high your body moves quickly to expel the sugar from your blood stream. Insulin takes this excess sugar and stores it in your liver and then in your muscle cells. When they fill up, all remaining sugar gets converted and stored as fat. The bad news is, our bodies have an almost unlimited capacity for fat storage, both on the surface and in your organs. The more frequently your blood sugar is raised, the more insulin you produce. The more insulin you produce, the more sugar you dump as fat. High insulin levels not only encourage the conversion of food into fat, but also inhibit your body’s ability to break down your previously stored fat. So, once you’re fat… you stay fat. Excessive insulin will keep the fat flowing to all the places you don’t want it. Think of it as the Fat Storing Hormone. Insulin also controls how you feel day to day. When your body produces too much insulin your blood sugar plummets, a phenomena called hypoglycaemia. The typical symptoms are:

• tiredness, • mood swings, • headaches • and cravings for fast foods and sugary snacks.

Enter Glucagon: If excess insulin is the enemy to weight loss, then glucagon is the hero. What you want to achieve with your diet is to find the right balance of nutrients to make glucagon thrive. The way to think of glucagon is as The Fat Mobilising Hormone; It instructs your body to take excess fat and converts it back into glucose (blood sugar) to fuel your body. Glucagon is basically the opposite end of the fat storage process to insulin. They work together like a seesaw: when insulin levels are up, glucagon is down and vice versa. We can get glucagon fighting for us by:

1. Cutting back on our carbohydrates, which culls both your sugar consumption and insulin production.

2. Eating good fats with every meal since they slow the release of carbohydrate into your blood stream meaning that your blood sugar levels will stabilise.
