What would we call a breeding bitch? The rules currently state breeding bitch can be bred at 6 months. Wayne will contact Jullian and find out how we can help him. An amazing day was spent at the first North Branch Kid’s Carnival, Saturday, September 13th at the City Park. This event had over 700 children attending. We provided coloring books, a few dogs for petting and information about caring for dogs. A special thank you to Karen Lawrence for coordinating this event and to those members who volunteered to help make this event a success. We will certainly be looking forward to participating in this event next year.

Congratulations to Kathy Haglof and her Lagotto Romagnolo!

Minnesota Lagotto Romagnolo Wins Club Show Villa Morsiani Bagnara di Romagna. October 9, 2014—Lagotto Lady Kennels, which operates out of Lindstrom, Minnesota, proudly announces that its 15-month-old male Lagotto Romagnolo Dog, Il Granaio dei Malatesta Dalmazio, (IGDM Dalmazio) recently won Best of Breed in the wonderful scenery of Bagnara di Romagna, Italy, at the prestigious 2014 Lagotto Romagnolo Raduno. Kathy Haglof, owner of Lagotto Lady Kennels, has been breeding Lagottos since 2011. She recently pur-chased IGDM Dalmazio from world-class breeder Monica Benelli of Il Granaio Dei Malatestai. Haglof said it didn’t take long to see the unique temperament and special features of IGDM Dalmazio. “It was obvious we needed to send him back to his breeder and handler, Monica Benelli, to show in Europe,” said Haglof. Still, winning an event like the Raduno was surprising. “This is a big time thrill,” said Haglof. “We did not expect IGDM Dalmazio to earn this celebrated award. He’s such a young dog, and there were so many competitors. We are so honored and appreciative of all of Monicas help and expertise to achieve this status.”

Kathy Haglof and her Lagotto Romagnolo Continued… The Lagotto breed is rare and somewhat new to the United States. Haglof said that only a handful of Lagotto-exclusive ken-nels exist throughout North America. In Europe, the Lagotto is a more popular breed, used for Truffle hunting and prized for its loyalty, intelligence, obedience and family-friendly personality. The breed is also considered a great canine companion for those who suffer from allergies. Though relatively new to breeding Lagottos, Haglof has nonethe-less built an internationally known operation. “The Lagotto com-munity is small but growing, “ said Haglof, “We know each other and we help each other, and that’s been immensely beneficial to my operation. I’m living my dream and having the time of my life.” IGDM Dalmazio will continue showing in Europe and to return back to Minnesota sometime next spring.

New Members Accepted: Nancy and Samanth VanBuren Eagan Minnesota Australian Terrier Shown in Conformation/Junior Handling Annie Piper French Bull Dog Nicole Kleinfelter Emily Lawrence

Welcome!

Cheryl Zitto is looking for slightly used and almost new show clothes, male and female, to give to

the Junior Handlers at the Junior Handling Seminar at our 2015 shows. I am also looking for a clothes rack that can either be donated or borrowed for this event. Juniors are our dog show fu-

ture and we all know how expensive this sport is and is becoming.

Thank You in advance

Cheryl Zitto

AKC Delegate’s Report

Although I did not attend the June 2014 meeting, there are several items that have risen since the meeting.

Go to the AKC website to see the list of items that are being discussed for changing the obedi-

ence world. New titles are a possibility. Scheduling a morning and afternoon session and using the words “followed by” rather than a designated time. The possibility of two shows in one day. Many items were brought to the committee and additional responses are requested.

The National Owner Handler Series mandate that it must be held at each all-breed show in order

to have a special attraction (puppy groups, bred-by groups) have been altered to it must occur on one of the two show dates allowed for by the club. For example, at our Summer Solstice Cluster, one day from each club could be NOHS groups and the other puppy or bred-by. An additional fac-tor that is causing problems is that the NOHS group judges need to be licensed judges with at least one breed in each of the groups they are to judge. The names need to be submitted when the panel is due and needs to be published.

Ron Menaker is chairing a committee to investigate location sites for the AKC headquarters as the

New York and Raleigh leases will be due in a few years. Suggestions and comments are being solicited. Most comments are being centered on the business feasibility of the location and the “dog friendly” attitude held by state legislatures of a specific community.

AKC is soliciting information from clubs that have assisted in purchasing, equipping or training of

police dogs.

Please feel free to contact me with any information that you would like to have shared at the upcoming September delegate meeting. Wayne Harmon at [email protected]

What is Animal Welfare and why is it important?

The difference between Animal Rights & Animal Welfare By: Patti Strand 06/10/2014

Some people use the terms animal welfare and animal rights interchangeably, suggesting that they rep-resent the same concerns, principles and practices. But the differences between the two are significant and irreconcilable. Animal Welfare What is Animal Welfare? In its simplest form, animal welfare refers to the relationships people have with animals and the duty they have to assure that the animals under their care are treated humanely and responsibly. Despite its current popularity, interest in animal welfare is not a modern phenomenon. Concern for animal care and wellbeing has existed since domestication, which occurred at least 10,000 years ago in Neo-lithic times. Our appreciation and respect for animals led to their domestication, animal agriculture and animal husbandry, the branch of agriculture that deals with the care and breeding of animals. Many histo-rians consider the development of agriculture to be the most important event in all of human history. The animal welfare ethic that developed in the Neolithic era is one that obligated people to consider their animals’ welfare in order to achieve their own purposes. It set in place a mutually beneficial arrangement between people and animals that goes like this: “If we take care of the animals, the animals will take care of us.” In this ancient but enduring pact, self-interest demanded that people take good care of their ani-mals. Amazingly, this very fundamental animal welfare ethic survives today, especially in settings where hands-on animal care continues. Today we call this special relationship the human-animal bond. Dr. Bernard Rollin, an animal science professor at Colorado State University, argues however, that 20th century technology broke this ancient contract when it allowed us to put animals into environments and uses that didn't impair their productivity but harmed their well-being. That defines the challenge today, the need to provide acceptable levels of animal welfare in a nation that is no longer rural and agricultural, but which in the span of 2 paradigm-shifting centuries has become ur-banized and technological. In modern American society only 2% of an ever-increasing population lives on farms and only 1% practices farming as an occupation. This contrasts sharply with the mid 1800’s when 90% of Americans were farmers. If these trends continue, farming will become more concentrated in the future, a situation that makes animal welfare an even more important subject. Click here to read the full article.
