Green Team Abuzz with Activity

There’s a lot to report from Reiche’s Green Team. Spring always means preparing our schoolyard’s orchard, planting beds and sowing the school’s food garden, but with the continuation of the K-1 garden education program, a composting pilot program in third grade classrooms, the ramps coming down, the design and construction of a new garden shed, compost system, and seating area on the Clark Street side of the school, there’s been even more activity than usual. Thank you to those who participated in May’s Clean-up Day and who signed up for our planting blitz with students on June 9th! Also, thanks to Reiche PTO, Ecomaine, Portland Trails, Donor’s Choose, Charlotte Maloney Landscape Design, and the City of Portland for their donated expertise, generous grant funding, and valuable partnership over the last year. Contact [email protected] if you'd like to work with us on the Green Team, or to sign your family up to be summer garden stewards for a week over the summer. Highlights from a few of the Green Team’s recent activities: Bin There, Done That! Compost Comes (Back) to Reiche The Urban Homesteading 101 class has been learning new skills in the garden. Eight students have nearly completed the compost bins outside the Clark Street entry. The bins will be used for classroom food waste and when the "We Compost It" bins are not in the brickwork. Donor's Choose donations, a grant from EcoMaine, and hard working Reiche kids made it all possible. Landscaping the New Clark St. Entrance and Seating Area: United Way Day of Caring The Reiche Green Team always looks forward to the United Way Day of Caring. Seven or eight adults from businesses around town come to help with garden projects. Together with Green Team members, parent volunteers, and a group from TD Bank, our work party on May 18th was 15 members strong! This year our project was to the initial landscape at the new Clark St. entrance. Despite the 90-degree heat, the crew dug in (pardon the pun), and got everything planted and watered ahead of schedule! There was time left to weed, rake, trim some perennials and prune shrubs. All of the new the plants are Maine natives and endorsed by Heather McCargo of Wild Seed Project and city arborist Jeff Tarling, who is a Green Team member passionate about native plants! The design includes sweet ferns, bayberry bushes, witch hazel and black chokeberries. Over the next week or so, the Green Team will be planting Virginia Creeper, a beautiful vine to climb up the side of our new shed, and another vine, ground nut, for one of the brick walls. To come: a long stone seating wall (with granite blocks from one of the city’s original jails) and a big Oak Tree to shade the Clark Street entrance in the afternoon! --Charlotte Maloney, Landscape Architect The Reiche Fruit Orchard: Year-round Care from Mrs. Graves’ Class Did you know that we have seven fruit trees in the Reiche Orchard? There are six apple trees of different varieties and one peach tree. These were planted by classes from kindergarten through the fifth grade in 2013. The oldest tree is called an “espalier”. It is located at the corner of the school on the Clark Street side next to the playground. It is a single tree that has been grafted with four different apple varieties. It was a gift to the school by the City Arborist, Jeff Tarling. Mrs. Graves’ class has helped care for the trees each year. In the early spring, we prune the trees to keep them growing true and strong. Later in the spring, we weed around each tree; the weeds compete for energy the roots need to thrive. We also paint the tree trunks with diluted white latex paint to prevent sun scald which can prevent growth. The paint also shows us any invasion by “Apple Tree Borer” insects, which can kill trees. We put wood chips around each tree to helps hold moisture for the roots. In the fall, the class works on preparing the trees for the winter season. We do this by making sure all the weeds are removed. Next, we place plastic guards around each of the trees. The guards protect the trees during the winter from mice and voles. Once snow comes, these little critters like to burrow under the snow to the base of the tree. If the trunk is not protected they eat the bark, and this will kill the tree. Bark is so important for the protection and growth of the tree. Thanks to this work done by Mrs. Graves’ class year after year, soon all of our trees will be producing delicious fruit. –Waite Maclin, Reiche neighbor, and retired commercial apple grower Thanks for another great year and see you in the garden! — Reiche Green Team (Joel Ellis, Hazel Holmes, Waite Maclin, Charlotte Maloney, Ali Mediate, and Wynne Wirth)

News from the 3rd grade Spanish class: The students created a story about a hungry teacher. They acted and read the story, and created illustration for each part of the story. Now, the students are creating their own version of the story about character that is hungry. Ask your child about their hungry teacher! We will end the year playing games and listening to songs in Spanish.

News from 4th grade Spanish class: The students have been learning a new vocabulary. They learned to act the words, and to connect them in short sentences. They will watch a video, and they will describe what they see. The man, the cat and the fly (the three characters in the video), will keep the students talking! The will play a Game Show to reinforce the learning of the new vocabulary. On the last week of school, we will play more games, and we will listen to Spanish songs. News from 5th grade Spanish class: The students are writing stories. They learned new words and expressions and how to gesture them. With short and funny videos, the students had opportunities to watch, listen and talk using new and known vocabulary. They can talk in Spanish about a “family’s” opinion towards the use of paper vs ipad, or they can tell you a few things about Messi vs. Kobe Bryant. Now the students are creating funny stories using all the vocabulary they have been learning. We will end the year with games and songs in Spanish

School Lunch Recipe Drive Parents, Send Us Your Recipes So We Can Share Them With the PPS Food Director! The Food Director chooses all the distributors who sell Portland Public Schools the ingredients that PPS uses to create breakfasts and lunches every day. As we've spoken with her about ideas for increasing children's nutritional intake, she's said that she would be open to receiving input from parents about what vegetables and proteins their kids eat, and in what form. To that end, we're having a Recipe Drive! Send back a quick, off-the-top-of-your-head email including a few of your kids' favorite veggies and proteins, and/or some simple ways that you prepare them so your kids will eat them!

Second Grade News What an exciting spring second graders have had! We have been busy learning about sea creatures and working with Side X Side artists! First we were able to see many native sea creatures and touch some! We got to hold a sea star, crabs, limpets, and periwinkles. We saw baby shrimp, a pregnant crab, many types of seaweed, and even a baby lobster! What a great way to begin our unit of study! We began researching our sea creature and the artist Cat came in to teach us how to make line drawings. We can't wait to share our beautiful drawings with you! Next we went to Nance Parker's Art Studio. We learned how to make paper mache sea creatures. We had so much fun working with newspaper, paper mache and paints. Then Meg, an improvisational actor, came in and taught us how to be confident and project our voices when speaking to a group of people. The students will have an opportunity to present their knowledge of their sea creature on video. We would like you all to come to our celebration on Friday, June 9 at 9:00 to 9:45. We hope you can make it! The sea creatures will be on display in the library, if you can't come to the celebration.
