Introduction:• We should follow Jesus’ example of

singing spiritual songs.– This was foretold in the Psalms. Ps. 22:22;

Heb. 2:11-12– It was seen after Jesus’ last supper with the

disciples before His death on the cross. Mt. 26:30

• Our singing can be an important indication of our spiritual well being. 1 Tim. 4:6-7– It shows our faith and joy in God and is a

great source of encouragement.

Various Types of Singers• Those who never sing.

– Some Christians are like this.– This directly violates scripture. Eph. 5:19;

Col. 3:16; James 5:13– Christians are commanded to sing.

• Those who sing begrudgingly.– Some may sing but from a sense of “duty” or

obligation.– Obligatory singing, like with giving is not

pleasing to God. 2 Corinthians 9:7

Various Types of Singers• Those who sing half-heartedly.

– Their mouths might sing but their heart is not in it. 1 Corinthians 14:15

– This type of worship is described as hypocritical. Mt. 15:7-8

• Those who sing to impress others.– Like praying, singing to be praised by others

is not pleasing to God. Mt. 6:5; cf. Eph. 6:6

• Those who sing and make melody in their hearts.– To praise the Lord and edify others. Ps. 95:1-

3; Acts 16:25; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16

Importance of Proper Singing• To avoid sinning. Mt. 28:20

– Must make sure that we not make false promises, or refuse to sing, or sing inappropriately.

• To offer acceptable sacrifices.– Singing praises is a spiritual sacrifice to offer

to God. Heb. 13:15– God doesn’t want mediocre sacrifices.

Mal. 1:6-14

• To encourage others.– Singing is meant to encourage others as well

as yourself and to praise God. Eph. 5:19

• To be richly blessed.– Singing is a way you can make melody in

your heart. Eph. 5:19– Singing can be a way of letting the word of

Christ dwell in you richly. Col. 3:16

Steps To Better Singing

• Involve your mind. 1 Cor. 14:15– We should do so with understanding what

we’re singing.

• Involve your heart.– We must sing with grace in our hearts to the

Lord. Col. 3:16– And we are to be making melody in our hearts

to the Lord. Eph. 5:19– We must put our heart into our singing,

otherwise our singing will be hypocritical. Mt. 15:7-8

Steps To Better Singing

• Involve your voice. Ps. 63;5; 71:23– Sing out and enunciate the best you can.

• Expand the sphere of your singing.– Singing like prayer should also be

spontaneous, arising whenever the circumstances call for it. Acts 16:25; Ps. 34:1-3

Sing To the Lord!

• David a man after God’s own heart loved to sing. Ps. 13:6; 57:9; 104:33

• He called on others to sing in public and in private. Ps. 149:1, 5

• We as followers of the Son of David (Jesus), should love to sing praises to God and spiritual songs to one another.

• According to God’s word, How well do you sing? Let us strive to be the best singers we can be for the Lord.

Salvation Awaits!• Don’t delay! Be saved today. Rom. 6:23

• Salvation is found only in Christ. 2 Tim. 2:10; Acts 4:12

• Get into Christ = Get saved from sin! How?– Hear & Believe unto life. Mark 16:16; Acts 16:31– Repentance of sin unto life. Acts 11:18; 2:38– Confession unto salvation Rom. 10:10; Ac. 8:37– Baptism into Christ. Gal. 3:27;Rom.6:3;Ac.22:16– Then, be faithful, keep God’s commands.
