3. Turn the ignition on to accessory power. Don’t crank the engine. Accessory power isthe when you turn the key in the ignition to the notch where the radio is on and theseatbelt chime starts ringing. You must turn on the power within 10 or 15 seconds ofconnecting the code reader or the code reader will display ERROR and after a fewseconds, repeat the cycle of trying to read the car’s status again

4. After you turn the ignition switch to accessory power, the code reader will readwhatever code your car’s computer is sending. In the case of the picture at left, onlythe numerical error code is displayed. The owner would then need to refer to theinstruction manual that came with the code reader in order to determine what thecode represented. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’re assuming that we alreadyknow that the code represents something that isn’t critical and all we want to do isturn off the check engine light.

5. Press the Erase button twice. Check engine light is off. Disconnect code reader andturn off ignition. You just saved yourself at least $50 by doing it yourself!
