    How to Select Welded,

Welded & Drawn, orSeamless Tubing and PipeAt RathGibson, we understand that choosingbetween Welded, Welded & Drawn, orSeamless tubing or pipe can be complex. Aspart of our on-going commitment to customerservice, we have created this document to

help to demystify the selection process.

Quality RequirementsWhen making this selection, the qualityrequirements, such as corrosion, dimensionallimits, and strength, should be the primarycriteria. Frequently, companies select tubingor pipe based on manufacturing process, which may lead to a misrepresentation ofone’s needs and consequently the choiceof a less cost effective or inappropriate

tubing option. The list below presents the most commonqualities that are essential to a wide rangeof applications. The list also suggests whichproduct type may best t the requirement.Table 1 also makes suggestions basedon attributes. Please note that thesesuggestions are based on generalizations;the nal selection should be based on alloyspecics.

    1. OD and Wall Tolerancesa. Telescoping tubesb. ID/OD machining – Hydraulic or pneumatic cylindersc. Bending with ID toolingSuggestions: For these applications, it has been shown that

RathGibson Welded & Drawn tubing and pipe are best suited. For bending applications, RathGibson’s Welded tubing and pipemay be used with special tolerances applied.

    2. Wall Tolerancesa. Orbital weldingSuggestions: RathGibson Welded or Welded & Drawn tubingand pipe are ideal for wall tolerance requirements.

    3. Extreme consequences of a leak possibly after signicantfabricationa. Air cooled exchanger with high ns installedb. Lethal service

Suggestions: Before an accurate selection can be made,RathGibson highly recommends that integrity testing, as wellas additional non-destructive testing (NDT) be performed, regardless of the tubing type utilized.

    4. Aqueous Corrosiona. Generalb. Pittingc. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)d. Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC)Suggestions: In order to make an educated suggestion on thetubing or pipe type that will best resist corrosion, RathGibsonrecommends that additional quality requirements always be

    identied.

    5. High Temperature Wastinga. Oxidizingb. Suldationc. Carburizationd. Metal DustingSuggestions: RathGibson Welded &Drawn or Seamless tubing and pipecan best handle High Temperature

Wasting. The specic application willhelp determine the alloy.

    6. Cleanability — hygienic applicationsSuggestions: RathGibson’s high purityand ultra high purity welded tubingand pipe are specically designedfor industries with hygienicapplications, such as Pharmaceutical,BioPharmaceutical, and Food andBeverage. Seamless tubing and pipecan be specied for use with smalldiameters.

    7. OD Cosmetica. Requiring OD Polishingb. OD compression ttings to seal at

high pressureSuggestions: RathGibson’s Weldedtubing and pipe are offered with specialnishes that meet any cosmetic ODrequirements. Seamless tubing and pipefor small diameters are also available.

    8. ID Cosmetica. Hydraulic are seal ends

Suggestions: Seamless tubing and pipefrom RathGibson will meet your mostdemanding cosmetic ID requirements.RathGibson also offers Welded tubingand pipe that are ID polished that alsot this need.

    Table 1: Attributes Summary

Process Conditions EvaluationThe selection of welded, welded & drawn, or seamless tubing andpipe would not be complete without evaluating process conditions

for the leak risk. Consideration should be given to possiblecorrosion as well as to any potential hazards, as these factors willinuence the selection of tubing type, the amount of non-destructiveexamination (NDE), and the need for corrosion evaluation.
