• There rate is very similar to the E19 rate• The energy charges are simple, the demand charges magnify
the difference between day and night time costs

• Demand charges are additive– (Summer peak period is noon to 6pm, May thru October)
• Summer demand charges include: + $ 18.53/kW during peak period
+ $ 14.71 /kW for the maximum demand
• What the heck is a maximum demand charge?– It’s a facilities penalty charge for high peak demand that occurs during the
previous month….independent of time. It is defined in the rate sheet as follows:
“…the maximum-demand charge per kilowatt applies to the maximum demand at any time during the month.”
$32.24/kW

• In the winter (November through April) there is no peak period, the part peak period covers the day.
• If we assume the building is an office or a building with a similar cooling load profile the peak is likely to occur between 2pm and 5pm.
• Thus, at this time the demand savings might be derived from reducing the size of maximum demand and the maximum part peak demand ……but this is a significant charge:
$14.99/kW

PG&E’s E-20S Rate, Summary
• The demand charges are significantly large and make day time energy costs expensive.
• Focusing only on energy efficiency ignores a large portion of the bill (demand charges)
• There are potentially large savings when shifting load in a daytime peaking building.
• Electricity in the summer is approximately 72% cheaper at night
• Electricity in the winter is approximately 50% cheaper at night
