Every MSU international student and every medical student is automatically enrolled in and charged for MSU’s Aetna health insurance plan.
If you already have a comparable health insurance policy from another source, then you might be able to “waive” or “remove” the MSU health insurance requirement and charge.
If your insurance policy is equivalent to the MSU Aetna policy, then you can request a “waiver” or “dispensation” of the Aetna policy and charge.

What is a “Summary of Benefits”?
The “summary of benefits” is usually listed at the beginning of your health insurance policy and lists the basic items covered by
your policy.

What is “proof of insurance”?
You may never have received an actual “health insurance card” but somehow, you need to show proof that you are actually
enrolled in the alternate health insurance policy.
The “proof” must include your name and the start and end dates of the insurance coverage.
Different ways to show “proof of insurance” include:
Actual identification card
from insurance agency
Print out purchase receipt from web site or copy of receipt
from agency
Print out or copy of policy

What is the “ISHI”?
ISHI stands for “International Student Health Insurance”
Michigan State University requires every international student and every medical
student to have health insurance coverage.
Because of this requirement, each international or medical
student is automatically enrolled in MSU’s Aetna health insurance policy as soon as they enroll in
classes.
