How to register for a course at the language centre

Since Winter Semester 2012-13 the Language Centre has been using OPAL as its course management software. This means you need to register for courses online. You can do this from any computer with an Internet connection provided that:

you are already registered as a student of Chemnitz University of Technology, and

you have a university login and password for our online system. If this is not the case, you need to contact the computer centre (“Rechenzentrum”) for such a login and password. When you have this, follow the instructions below. First go to the main website for the language centre (see screenshot below) Then click on the link OPAL in the left-hand column: Then click on “Zur Kursverwaltung via OPAL gelangen Sie hier”.

You may then see the following page, leading to the login (red arrow, below). Most importantly, you can change the language of the system using the dropdown menu in the top right-hand corner next to it is an arrow icon which you need to click after selecting English (green arrow, below):

Unfortunately, the language change works only for a limited number of pages! We’re working on it!

You’ll then access the following page, which at least explains the basics in English:

Next, log in page by clicking on the link. Enter your normal university login (Benutzername) and password (Passwort) in the spaces in the grey box (above). The first time you register, the system will ask you if it can send data to the Bildungsportal

Sachsen You have the options Ja immer (always send data), Ja, nur einmal (send data just this

time) or Daten nicht senden (do not send data). You have to agree to send data in order to access

the system. The system is specifically designed for higher education in the German state of

Saxony and the proprietors have guaranteed data security.

Use this dropdown menu to

change from German to English

Make sure that “TU Chemnitz” is showing here;

if not, select it from the dropdown menu,

then click “Zum Login”

From here on, the site is in German. Please choose your courses as instructed below:

Please click on Lehr-und Lernangebote der TU Chemnitz (red arrow, above) and then on

Here I have chosen German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache)

The German instructions say “click on “Kurs starten” to register for the course. If there is more than one group for your level, choose the day and time which best fits your timetable. The link in blue leads to the whole course programme with further information regarding materials, course content, examinations, etc. The note in red gives information regarding the starting date of registration – this may vary from course to course. You will not be able to register before this date, but you are encouraged to register soon afterwards to be sure of a place. Some courses fill up very quickly! If your chosen course is full, put your name on the waiting list (Warteliste). The note at the bottom of the page gives important information on data protection: evaluation and assessment data on this website are available exclusively to you, the student, and your learning-group leaders (i.e. language centre personnel, principally your teachers, the programme supervisors and our head of department).
