Be in the “Know”!What is labyrinthitis?Labyrinthitis (say: “lab-uh-rinth-
eye-tus”) is a condition that affects apart of the inner ear called thelabyrinth. Normally, the labyrinthhelps you keep your balance. When itgets swollen, the labyrinth doesn’t workproperly so your brain doesn’t get theright balance signals. Labyrinthitis canmake you feel like you are falling orspinning, even though you aren’t.
What is Meniere's disease?Meniere's (say: "men-ears") disease
is a problem with your inner ear. Noone knows exactly what causes it, butit may be related to a build up of fluid in the inner ear. Al-though it can be troublesome, Meniere's disease is not con-tagious, and it isn't fatal.Although Meniere’s disease is a chronic (ongoing) prob-
lem, people who have Meniere's disease don't have symp-toms all the time. When symptoms occur, it's called an"attack." Attacks may happen often, or only sometimes. At-tacks may last from 20 minutes to 2 hours or longer. Me-
niere's disease usually occurs in onlyone ear, although some people whohave the disease have problems inboth ears.
What is tinnitus?Tinnitus is a problem that causes
you to hear a noise in one ear or bothears. People commonly think of it asringing in the ear, but it also can beroaring, clicking, buzzing or othersounds. Some people who have tinni-tus hear a more complex noise thatchanges over time. You may hear thenoise constantly, or it may come andgo.
In most cases, people who have tinnitus hear noise intheir head when no outside sound is there. This type of tin-nitus is called “subjective tinnitus.” It can happen becausecertain nerves are not functioning normally or becausethere is a problem with part of your ear. In rare cases, tin-nitus is caused by an actual sound that occurs inside ornear the ear, such as from nearby blood vessels. This typeof tinnitus is called “objective tinnitus.”

Essential foods for heart health(BPT) - With so much talk of what food you should avoid and
what to cut out of your diet, it is refreshing to hear that some foodsare so good for your health that you should be eating more of them.Focusing on adding in more healthy foods can be an easier way toimprove a diet and less stressful as well.
Pile up your plate with these heart-healthy foods:• Fish. Light fish like salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty
acids which are essential for healthy heart functioning.• Walnuts and almonds. These crunchy bites offer omega-3 fatty
acids, vitamin E as well as mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Thesecan be used as substitutes for croutons on salads or as a healthysnack when you’re craving that salty crunch.
• Black beans or kidney beans. The B-complex vitamins, niacinand soluble fiber found in these beans are great at protecting theheart and blood vessels. Beans also are a great low-fat proteinsource, which are a great substitute for heavy red meats.
• Oatmeal. Oats offer fiber, folate and B-vitamins. Other wholegrains are also great additions to the diet.
• Berries and leafy vegetables. Fruits and veggies offer such awide array of important vitamins and minerals. Slowly adding inmore servings of berries and dark green leafy vegetables will im-prove health that doesn’t stop at your heart.
Before you try banning items from your diet for the fifth week in arow, try a different approach. Use healthy foods to satisfy your hungerwithout starving yourself from your cravings. Your heart will bestronger and so will your determination to stick to a healthy diet.

Here are some tips for maintaining and improving your oral health:
• Brush twice a day with a tooth-brush with soft bristles. You may alsobenefit from using an electric tooth-brush.
• Clean between your teeth once aday with floss or another interdentalcleaner.
• If you wear full or partial dentures, remember to clean them on a dailybasis. Take your dentures out of yourmouth for at least four hours everyday. It’s best to remove them at night.
• Drink tap water. Since most con-tains fluoride, it helps prevent toothdecay no matter how old you are.
• Quit smoking. Besides putting youat greater risk for lung and other cancers, smoking increases prob-lems with gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss.
• Visit your dentist. Visit your dentist regularly for a completedental check-up.

Heart Disease: Walking for a Healthy HeartWalking is a form of aerobic exercise and is one of the easiest
ways to increase your physical activity and improve your health.Physical activity increases your heart rate, strengthens your heart, and increases blood circulation through your body, bringing moreoxygen and nutrients to yourorgans. Exercise also increasesyour lungs' ability to take inoxygen, lowers blood pressure, helps to reduce body fat, andimproves blood sugar andcholesterol levels.
Have a checkup before be-ginning an exercise program. If you have heart problems, your doctor may want to dotests to find out how much ac-tivity your heart can safelyhandle.
Start out slowly at first, witha warm-up in the beginning, afaster pace in the middle, and a cool down at the end.
To stay motivated, walk with friends, coworkers, or pets. Setgoals you can reach.
Use a pedometer to count your steps. Wear it all day and try totake at least 2,000 more steps a day than you normally do, andgradually increase your steps over time.
Try to do at least 2½ hours of moderate exercise a week. One wayto do this is to be active 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week.

(BPT) - Worldwide there are an estimated 1.5 million ad-vanced cancer patients who experience the disease spreadingto their bones. If you are a patient with cancer, or care for some-one who is, here are a few facts you should know.Bone metastases, or the spread of cancer to the bone, can be
a serious complication that often goes unaddressed and affectsa substantial portion of patients with cancer from solid tumors, including:More than two-thirds of advanced breast can-
cer patients. Up to 90 percent of advancedprostate cancer patients. Approximately 36 per-cent of advanced lung cancer patients. The Im-portance of Bone HealthIf left untreated, bone metastases can weaken
bones and even cause them to break. Therefore,it’s important for patients with advanced cancerto understand their bone health and speak withtheir doctors about the steps they can take tobetter protect themselves.“Patients and their loved ones may not under-
