Data Interpretation, considered by many as the toughest section to crack as far as GRE Quants is concerned, teases the candidate’s ability to come unscathed from having to deal with a myriad of information represented in a pictorial manner i.e. bars, charts, pies and lines ,etc.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to not attempt this section first. Having said that, you have to work on other questions in such a manner that you have ample to work on these at the end. Cracking this section is all about your ability to spot the data necessary to answer the questions.

Firstly, survey the representation to the best of your ability and note down the necessary information. Identify the bigger picture before moving on to the questions as it will help you interpret the information provided with a lot of clarity. CLARITY is the golden word here. Once you achieve it, this section should be a piece of cake, contrary to public opinion.

Note down the information provided if it seems elementary. Though it may take a few seconds longer, it will definitely improve your odds on figuring out the right answer. It is better to penny wise pound foolish than the other way around.

If the representation is confusing, look for patterns.• Is there any correlation?• If there is, is it direct or indirect?• Are there any outliers, any maximum or minimum values?Deciphering the information between the variables will give a clearer picture.Further, feel free to approximate the values. To illustrate, it may ask you to find the expenditure for June as a percentage of the yearly expenditure. Yearly expenditure as $19,000 and the June expenditure as $39,90. For questions like these you do not need to use the calculator – just round them off to 20,000 and 4,000 respectively and quickly find the percentage. While approximating, make sure that you maintain a level of consistency in how you among the values.

Practice as much as you can. The more you practice, the better your chances of figuring out the right answer in a very short span of time. Remember, Time is Precious! Make sure

you don’t learn it the hard way on the day of your examination.
