If youre running a hybrid environment, you know the
public cloud isnt one-size-fits-all.
Youll hit roadblocks if you aim to simply lift and shift data to cloud services
but its not always clear how to transition better.
A successful move to hybrid IT depends on three factors:
availability, performance and latency.
1. Availability: One benefit to on-prem data center infrastructure
is controlling its availability.
When a cloud provider houses your applications, you take a passenger seat.
Cloud servers need maintenance, too and sometimes, that happens at the exact moment you need to
access a virtual machine.
Does this app require the high availability of
an on-prem environment?
Before moving apps to the cloud, consider:
If it does, youll need to consider rewriting the app for the cloud or keeping it on-premises
to avoid your end users taking a hit.
2. Performance: Theres no guarantee your cloud provider will mirror
the benchmarks you use to gauge performance on-premises.
How much compute do your apps use?
Will they deliver the same results running on cloud infrastructure?
Whats the apps performance SLA, and can the cloud meet it?
If the answers to these questions are surprising, you might find
yourself raising your cloud budget to maintain a performance status quo.
3. Latency: If you move an app to cloud services, it might affect users
experience interacting with it.
Cloud hubs might be located thousands of miles away from your data center.
If your data uses the internet to travel to the cloud, its effectively taking a public subway ride delays and all.

To avoid pushing latency issues on your users, adopt an edge computing approach to keep
apps running in your data center while moving their related storage to the cloud.

Remember: Many apps can run in the cloud. Its just a question of how much
time and how many resources youll invest to get it there.
Balancing on-premises infrastructure, enterprise data centers and regional cloud
hubs is a challenge for every team
but keep your priorities straight, and youll reach the right combination of cloud and on-prem infrastructure in no time.
Learn how edge computing can accelerate hybrid IT for your team.
