Recognizing there are unmet environmental service worker’s education and training needs around infection prevention and control: NOT STATUS QUO

Recognizing that without a properly cleaned environment transmission of microorganisms does occur

Recognizing that a properly cleaned patient environment directly contributes positively patient safety and patient outcomes

Hold 6 one day education days over a 6 week period

Education days held in 3 communities

Leadership support covering time and food/travel

Focus on the basics: transmission, routine practices, PPE, hand hygiene and cleaning routines

One day/month –OOS ES management, –overview of ES P&P and hands-on (applying theory to practice)

On-the-job: buddying with senior ES X 2 days; then, one day of “supervised” cleaning procedures

If moved to a second area, then 2 more days. OR etc. has further days

Regardless of cleaning product used auditing must occur to ensure proper cleaning. Suggestion: high touch surfaces

Audit options are varied. KTHR has chosen to use the following

KTHR audit approaches include:

1. Visual inspections (all sites)

2. environmental “tracers” (Glo-Germ) that can be assessed when exposed to U/V light (one trial site)
