F EW PEOPLE know the seven principles of financial success. Fewerstill arc willing to apply them

even if they learn them. People assumethere is always a shortcut to financialsecurity and prosperity. They want to

take the easy road to quick gain, onlyto land up deeply in debt, frustrated and-more often than supposed-on theverge of suicide!

The BURDEN of Debt

Deficit spending is fashionable today. It fundamentally began in 1933 whenthe people were promised a NEW DEAL.They were told that going into debt ona national scale was a temporary measure to prime the financial pump-toget prosperity rolling again.

Instead, it took a war to bring artificial prosperity. But those seven yearswere enough to teach the people thehabit of staying in debt, the habit ofbuying things on time and paying later-if still employed. It has become anational fixation. It is even spreadingto other lands and nations. Credit isextended to practically everyone onpractically everything. Debt is considered normal by most people.

Some claim our public and privatedebt with mounting interest the causeof our apparent prosperity. But is it?

Why, if being in debt is normal, ateso many suffering [rom i h« terriblemental strain of being in debt? Why,in such seeming financial prosperity,

are so many burdened about their jobs, about security, about paying off theirmonthly installments, about losing theirhomes, even about bankruptcy?

It is time we faced these questions!

Must the Poor Stay Poor?

It is not uncommon to hear the statement: "We're just poor folks and proudof it."

But why should anyone be proud ofpoverty. Poverty is a shame. God speaksof poverty as a curse-a penalty resulting from broken laws.

Many of us, of course, cannot helpbeing poor. It may be roo late in lifeto change matters. Or we may have inherited unusual financial burdens. Godknows your circumstances. God haschosen the poor of this world to whomHe reveals His truth. Most poor peopleare more willing to listen to God thanare the wealthy. Poverty breeds a closerconsciousness of God and the need forGod. But that does not mean that God'speople have to stay poor!

God prospered Abraham. He prospered Isaac and Jacob. They were alltithe payers. Material prosperity as aright of birth-the Birthright-becameJoseph's. Our English-speaking worldinherits that Birthright today, as well asthe Blessing. Certainly God makes plainthat He wants His people to prosper.John the Apostle was inspired to write"Beloved, I wish above all things thaithou mayest prosper and be in health,

even as thy soul prospereth" (IIIJohn 2).

Notice that above all things in thismaterial world, God intends us to prosper and be in health-even as we areprospering spiritually. Physical prosperity and health go hand in hand withspiritual prosperity.

The reason this nation-or any nation, for that matter-is suffering fromso much worry about debt and healthis that no nation on earth today isspiritually prospering. Since all of usought to be spiritually prospering, let'snotice the rules, the laws that governour physical prosperity.

Though health is a MAJOR consideration in our financial well-being, thisis not the place to bring up health laws.We have an article on Seven Laws ofHealth by Mr. Roderick C. Meredith.

Now to examine the principles thatgovern our financial prosperity.

Case Histories

Before we plunge into the laws offinancial success, we ought to noticethe personal experiences of individualswho have made tragic mistakes in theirlife, people who have plunged so deeply into deht that they may remain indebt for life or be forced into bankruptcy. Some of these cases arc notonly frighteningly tragic, but frighteningly common.

spasmodic.He found competltlon keener and

jobs fewer in the larger city. He wasforced to sell his car in order to live.

Without sufficient transportation, hewas unable to take advantage of manyof the job opportunities offered to him.Several months went by before herealized he was fighting a losing battle.

What should Mr. A. have done?Mr. A. should have first, before he

left his home community, made a tripto Los Angeles and investigated working conditions, housing conditions, andliving conditions. He would have knownwhat to expect and could have preparedfor it months or even years before hemade this move. He would have beenwise to have saved for emergencies. And he would have been wise had heanalyzed, before selling the car, whichpossession of his was of least importance to his future earnings. Had hedone this, he could have refinancedand kept the car, giving him the transportation needed to take advantage ofthe job opportunities which he had.

A Farmer Goes to Town

Mr. W., in his middle fifties, is aman who has been farming all his life.He was a successful farmer on a smallscale. Mr. W. has a wife and threesons. His eldesl son was perhaps 2(;years of age when he entered college.Although successful, Mr. W. was notable to finance his son's education.

Approximately one year after the eldest son left for college, Mr. W. foundit necessary to give up his farm andmove to the city.

This was a complete change of environment, which Mr. W. was not ableto cope with. He had no experience inworking or coping with the husrle andbustle of city life. He was untrainedand unskilled. Naturally adverse conditions resulted, and he soon ran outof money-his savings now were completely exhausted.

He sold his possessions one after theother until there were none left. Theyounger boys were not of working age,and they soon faced starvation. Someone had to come to his rescue.

What should Mr. W. have done?If Mr. W. had used foresight, if he

had his finger more on the pulse of hisbusiness ami knew exactly where hestood, and if he had begun to preparefor the crisis staring him in the facebefore he left his farm, he would haveprepared bimsel] before itu-as too late.

This preparation could consist oftither night training in school, training by correspondence course, or onthe job training during the off season

A Business Venture That Failed

Here is another example:Mr. B. started a small business with

out sufficient background or experienceill rhe type of husinr-ss in which heentered. After making his initial investment, he no longer had sufficientfunds to hire a supervisor who didIra ve t he lJaLkgwulld and experiencenecessary to handle the situation. Hetried to struggle on alone, and beganto borrow money.

He worked long, hard hours for thefirst year or so and was just barely ableto keep his head above water. When herealized he was getting nowhere, heavydiscouragement set in, and he graduallybecame slack.

The business was soon lost and allof the original investment was absorbed. He came out broke, tired and penniless.

What should Mr. B. have done?Mr. B. should have properly trained

himself for this type of business, or heshould have entered into a business inwhich he was skilled.

Now take this case:Mr. A. was a skilled cement worker.

He, too, had always made ahove average wages. He came from a city in thesoutheastern part of the United Stateswhere building and construction was ayear around trade.

Mr. A. had never believed in stlvingfor emergencies. He was convincedthat, should emergencies arise, he wouldbe able to borrow money sufficient forthe needs. But he had not counted onbeing laid off due to work stoppage.

Having moved into the Los Angdnurea, he soon came to the realizationihar cement work and construction were

before he had to lag behind also inthe house payments.

By the time he had been in the houseone year, he was billed for taxes andinsurance. Naturally this was more thanhe expected. He now was faced withthe problem of losing everything hehad.

What should Mr. M. have done?Mr. M. should have counted the cost

before he purchased his house. Had heanalyzed the situation, he would haveknown before he went too far, just whathe was getting into. He could havesaved for one additional year beforepurchasing the house, ami he couldhave made arrangements to purchasethe furniture a little at a time duringthat period, preferably for cash. Hewould not have had the interest on thefurniture, and many of the little itemsfor the house he could have picked upin advance throughout that year andthen prepare to move into the house.

(;od, has hp,'n eenenllis in provid ing mewith several common examples at indebtedness.

Take the case of Mr. M.Would you have made the same mis

rakes that he did?Mr. M. has a very good job and earns

above average salary. He accumulatedseveral hundred dollars for the purposeof purchasing a little house for himselfand his family. He made the mistake, however, of purchasing the house be[ore he had sufficient funds to properlyfurnish it.

Once he scraped togethet all that hepossibly could to make the downpayment, he realized that he would havero overspend in order to furnish theplace. He was offered very good termsand time payments that he felt he couldmeet. Having obtained the house andthe furniture, and having signed allthe necessary contract papers and terms,he and his family moved into the littlehouse.

It was not long after he moved intothe house, however, that he began torealize there were all sorts of littleneeds for the house-garden tools forthe garden, and small items that tooka few dollars from his wages everyweek. These few dollars here and theresoon mounted up. At the end of themonth he found that he did not havesufficient to make payments on the furniture. These payments began to getfarcher and farther behind. He neglected to discuss his problem with thefurniture company. It was not long

BAPTISMAL TOURS ...Progress Report

T'be uation-unde baptismal tours have completed their seuentb week. Here is a concise report of their progress so far and the fruits God

is adding to His Church.

by A. J. Portune

By JUNE 1 of this year over 1,200 requests for baptism had reachedheadquarters here in Pasadena,

California. For several weeks the menselected to go on tour had spent longhours pinpointing cities and towns ondetailed road maps of the U.S. As thetime neared for departure, exact itineraries and schedules had been workedour by the teams.

Three groups daily were scheduled tobe contacted by each tour-morning,early afternoon and evening. The nexteleven weeks would be jam-packedweeks of hard work and long drivinghours.

On June 7 and 8 the three mainteams left from Pasadena-each withthe names of over 350 persons on theschedule.

Southern Tour

Mr. Ronald Kelly and Mr. Carl McNair turned southward to cover thesouthern parr of the United States fromCalifornia to Florida and return. In thefirst two weeks their mission carriedthem through Arizona, New Mexicoand rain-soaked Texas. Reporting fromPecos, Texas, here is a commenr fromtheir first weekly report:

"Greetings from the rain-soaked regions of New Mexico and Texas. Wehave had just that-PLENTY of good wetwater pouring down on us. We haveheard reports of two or three tornadoesand a great deal of damaging hail, burnone has come near us thus far. As youcan see we always need the prayers ofeveryone for protection, even from badweather.

"God has certainly been with us allthe way. Through this region it has beenvery difficult to find places suitable forbaptism. But, in every case, we havehad a place provided."

In the next few weeks the tour passedthrough Mississippi, Alabama, Florida,Georgia and North Carolina. In theirreport from Sanford, Florida, here isanother interesting excerpt:

"We were discussing a serious probleu. with ,1 wan ,llle! hi" wife. The mal'was nor particularly interested and did

not appreciate our telling him whathe would have to give up. He wasn'ta large man, bur he stood up, staredthrough cold steel-grey eyes and said,'You men may be right. But if you arenot, there will be a PRICE PAID. I aman expert with a bull whip, and I usedto be in show business with a whip.'As he stared at us we did not knowwhat might happen. It was possible thatwithin a few moments we might feelthat whiplash across our backs. But theprayers of God's people have been heardand he suddenly wheeled around, gotin his truck and drove off, We felt muchbetter all of a sudden."

I wonder if we realize how muchour prayers mean to these men! It is insituations such as the one just describedthat these men must pur their faith andconfidence in God to work our thecircumstances. When we are earnestlyand diligently praying for the safety ofGod's servants then God will heed andgive our men favor and protection.

Long Hours Produce Fruit

As the weeks passed and the thousands of miles rolled by, the long hoursof counseling and tedious driving beganto bear fruit. With each weekly reportthe statistics came in-more met, morebaptized.

But cold statistics don't tell the story!Only in the changed lives and in theoverwhelming joy of the newly begotten children of God is the real storytold. When we realize that each newlife-begotten of God-is to become aneternal king and priest, to rule andreign with Jesus Christ and to becomea very son of God, then we realize thetrue significance of the fruit beingborn.

Now, after eleven weeks, Mr. RonKelly and Mr. Carl McNair have traveled over 10,000 miles, Out of 254scheduled to meet them, they have metand counseled with 208. Ninety-onehave been baptized!

Central Tour

Mr. Bill McDowell and Mr. j amc..Wells (first English student to attend

Ambassador College), leaving in theearl}' morning hours of June 7, begantheir tour that would carry them acrossthe central belt of the United States andreturn. Their first few weeks took themthrough Nevada, Utah and into Wyoming. The following week, leavingWyoming and Nebraska behind, Iowa,Illinois and Indiana greeted them withviolent weather and heavy rains. Hereis an excerpt from their weekly reportfrom Paoli, Indiana:

"Greetings from the mucky middlepart in the United States; we've beenup to our ears in rainy, muddy conditions for the past two weeks. We'vewalked down muddy roads we couldn'tdrive down, waded across creeks thathad overflowed their banks and crossedthe road (before we dared cross in thecar) and baptized in creeks swollenwith muddy water and slime. One creekwas so shallow we had to lay the personon her back in the mud, and the waterwas just deep enough to flow over hercompletely."

WLS Broadcasts Missed

Now, in their seventh week, the tourhas passed through Illinois, Indiana,Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. While in the Illinois area manycommented about the program beingstopped on WLS. Many felt this was atremendous loss to their lives-not being able to hear The WORLD TOMORROWprogram any longer. (Some apparentlyweren't reading the radio log for otherstations. )

Our prayers are needed that anotherpowerful station will open there soon.

Meet Pentecostal Minister

Here is another interesting excerptfrom the baptismal tour report of July9, from Hagerstown, Maryland:

"We also met a Pentecostal ministerwhose wife wanted to be baptized. Itmakes one really thankful for the uaiuing and experience at Ambassador College, because he did his best to try to

take ooer the meeting. I now see moreand more why Mr. Armstrong finds that'preachy tone' so distasteful. I finally had[0 'convict' him a little; then he went

back to the car and left us alone. Itwas surprising to see how much morewe knew about the Bible than he didthough he had been a minister for sometime. One thing [or certain! THEY HAVENO ANSWER! We're so thankful God'sHoly Spirit is with us to give us thehelp and answers right on the tips ofour tongues when it is needed in timeslike that."

\'Qc can certainly be thankful thatGod is with these men supplying theirevery need. They certainly need wisdom, understanding and courage. Here'sanother situation experienced by thesemen as contained in their reports fromRichlands, Virginia:

"This week we have had some harIOWi1Z!!, experiences! It started with persecution. I left James to wait at thehome of a couple who wanted baptismwhile I went to another home. When Ireturned, James had been ATTACKEDAND WOUNDED--by a banty roosterwhich had 'snuck up' on him from theblind side! I guess James is not usedto our u.s. brand of wild and indignantbanty roosters."

Thus far in their tour, Mr. Bill McDowell and Mr. James Wells have met206 out of 258 that were originallyscheduled. One hundred twelve havebeen baptized thus far. In the remaining four weeks, they have the heaviestpart of their schedule as they entermore heavily populated areas.

Northern Tour

June S was the departure date forthe northern tour. Mr. Roger Fosterrecently ordained minister-and Mr.Carn Catherwood (one of our Canadianstudents) turned immediately to theNorth, passing through Oregon, Washington and then into the provinces ofBritish Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada.

In the first two weeks of their tour6,000 miles were driven in meetingonly 61 persons-the population beingwidely scattered. Here is an excerptfrom their report from Canada:

"The people in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan-one hundredpercent of them-had very good atritudes. Every single person that camewith the intention of being baptizedwas baptized.

"On the whole we were able to stayon the better roads in Canada, but oneday last week we had to drive 200miles over winding, mountainous, washboard roads of dirt and gravel in one.lay."

Back to the U.S.

Leaving Canada, the tcurn returned tothe United States, passing through

The GOOD NEWS

North and South Dakota, Minnesotaand Wisconsin. After the sparsely populated areas, the number contacted rapidly increased. Reporting from Wisconsin, here are comments tram their mostrecent reports:

"One of the most interesting visitswe had all week was with ~ 72-year-oldman and his wife. He was an exampleof how very active a person can keephis mind even past 70, if one will useit properly. In spite of this man's agehe still had one of the best understandings of the Bible of all the people wehave met. Both he and his wife werebaptized.

"On Sunday, July 17, we baptized ayoung fellow who was suffering frommyasthenia gravis, a general weaknesswhich was especially bad in his faceand throat. In May of 1959, the doctorsdid a permanent tracheotomy on hiswindpipe. Today there remains a holethrough his neck into his windpipe. Hehad to put tape over the hole so hewould not drown when he was baptized. We were able to talk to him, buthe could only write or nod his head sowe would know what he wanted to say.His attitude was really oxcollcnt,"

Here is a man who needs our prayers!Messrs. Foster and Catherwood have

met 177 thus far out of 209 scheduled. They have baptized serenty-eight. Thehigh percentages being baptized out ofthose met in Canada gives them aslightly higher average than the othertwo tours.

Two-thirds Complete

At this point in the tours two-thirdsof the people have been met-with approximately 100-150 yet to be visitedby each tour. Our tour office, here inPasadena, has been sending out newletters to the teams each week. Theseadded visits must be "sandwiched" intotheir already crowded schedules. For allthree tours the heaviest treas are yetto be covered.

By now the gruelling pace is beginning to tell on these men! Long hoursof driving, sleepless nights and irregular meals take their toll. Mr. RonaldKelly recently wrote of severe headaches causing him considerable painand discomfort.

Let's not let down in our prayers forthese men! Ler's remember they are inconstant danger every da)'. They need tobe alert and filled with zeal and withGod's Holy Spirit. They are dependingon YOU! We should pray for themcterv dCI)'!

California Tour Complete

Mr. Leroy Neff, ordained minister, and Mr. Bill Winner have just returned

August, 1960

from a three-week tour into northernCalifornia and southern Oregon. Onthis tour 55 were met out of 70 scheduled. Only 19 were baptized'

Mr. Neff feels that the low percentage of those being baptized can be attributed to the comparatively shortlength of time The WORLD TOMORROWprogram has been on Radio KGO, SanFrancisco. However, a great many ofthose who were baptized asked howsoon a Church might be established inSacramento or in the San FranciscoOakland Bay area. There are certainlyenough baptized members in this areato start quite a large Church. We needto ask God to send more laborers intothe harvest to shepherd the growingflock.

Final "Pick-up" Tour

For many who were too late in writing, and for others that could not beincluded in one of the three main tours, there will be a final "pick-up" tour tobe conducted by Mr. Richard Pinelliand Mr. Clarence Huse.

These two men have been assistingMr. Carlton Smith in the New YorkChurch during the summer-visitingthe brethren of this rapidly growingarea. They will have left New York byAugust 15 to return to Pasadena beforethe start of college, On this return tripthey will meet some 60 persons in their"pick-up" tour. They were able to visit20 on their way to New York in theearly part of the summer. Already Godhas added over 300 newly baptizedmembers to His Church-through thesetours! More will be added in the nextfew weeks.

Let's all of us rejoice, along with allthe angels of God who leap for joy atone sinner come to repentance. Let'sall thank God for more brothers andsisters, mothers and fathers with whomwe can meet and fellowship at the coming Feast of Tabernacles. And, let'snot let down in our prayers to theCreator God for the safety of His servants in His service on these tours.

Into What Were You BAPTIZED?Here are vital principles new members and old alike desperately

need to understand!

SO NOW you've been baptized!

But JNTO WHAT?Today, most denominational lead

ers are truly elated over rising churchattendance, increased Bible sales, agradual leaning toward religion to supply the answers in a perplexing, franric, dizzying, explosive world! People,ir seems, are trying to "make their peacewith God,"

Buying God Off

To many, this final "peace making"is a mere ceremony-a long-delayed andvery reluctant surrender of an old andcherished way of life! It is a last-minute and desperate attempt, now thatold age is creeping up, and the doubtsof the hereafter are beginning LO lingermore and more, to "get right" withtheir Creator-to assuage His wrath, toappease His anger, to "buy God off!"

Realizing this factor of human nature, brethren, you need to take realWARNING!

Perhaps, without realizing it, someof YOU scattered brethren have beentrying to "buy God off!"

The Common Conception

Perhaps the reasoning of some hasgone somewhat like this: "I've got toGET RIGHT with God! Mr. Armstronghas about as much truth as anyone I'veheard-he's closest to the way I believe-I think I'll just write and ask hisrepresentatives to come by, and maybeI can get BAPTIZED!"

Some have reasoned, from their owncarnal minds, that if they can just GETBAPTIZED, can somehow call a trucewith God, can escape His wrath, all willwork out right, somehow!

Have )'ou felt this way? Many people in this world are re

ligious independents!" They want toworship God ALONE, they want to dothings THEIR way, the way that seemsright to THEM! They're suspicious ofchurches, they scoff and ridicule if regular church attendance is mentioned, believing they don't need a local churchto attend!

They feel they have now been baptized, and REGARDLESS of what anyonesays about it, they know they have"made their peace with God,"

But is this conception TRUE!Is God calling a group of INDEPEND

LNTS today? Is God operating throughscattered, disorganized, disloyal, un-

by Garner Ted Armstrong

faithful JNDEPENDENTS? Or is Godworking through His CHURCH?

Were You BaptizedINTO A CHURCH?

Into WHAT were you baptized--doyou know?

Perhaps you can't remember the exact words that were spoken by the baptizing team that visited your areaperhaps you weren't even baptized byone of our own ordained ministers ortheir assistants,

However, if you were, the actualwords spoken went something like this:

"And now, (then your name), as aresult of your repentance of your sins, and yuur acceptance of Jesus Christ asyour personal Saviour, your Master,High Priest and coming King, I nowbaptize you INTO THE NAME of theFather, the Son and the Holy Spirit, INTHE NAME, and by the authority ofJesus Christ, for the remission of sins,Amen."

Notice it! Even though the wordingmay vary a little with each individual, the meaning will be there! Notice, itwas INTO THE NAME OF THE FATHER,SON AND HOLY SPIRIT that you werebaptized-not into any Church! Youwere "baptized into Jesus Christ" (Rom.6: 3), You were not baptized into aChurch.

Notice what Peter said, on that Dayof PeI1leCOSl, A.D. 31, "Repent, andbe baptized everyone of you, in thename of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and YOU SHALL receivethe gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts2: 38).

How WERE people put into thetrue Church? "Then they that gladlyreceived His word were baptized, andthe same day there were added untothem about THREE THOUSAND souls. . . And the Lord added to the churchdaily such as should be saved" (Acts2 :41-47).

HOW are You ADDEDto the Church?

Does this mean that since Peter saidNOTHING about "joining a Church ofyuur choice" or about being baptizedINTO a Church, YOU ARE NOT A MEM·BER OF A CHURCH?

Most certainly NOT!You WERE NOT BAPTIZED INTO A

CHURCH by WA'l'HK!But you WERE, IF you have truly

REPENTED of your sins, and met God'sprior conditions, BAPTIZED INTO THF.CHURCH, nevertheless!

Does this sound a little confusing? Itisn't-it's simple-so simple a littlechild can understand!

God says, through Paul, in Romans8:6-9 "For to be carnally minded isdeath, but to be spiritually minded islife and peace, because the carnal mindis ENMITY against God, for it is notsubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be!" The MIND, then, the veryItature of man must be CHANGED! Water baptism accomplishes NONE of this,Water baptism is merely the symbolfor getting rid of your gUllty pastfiguratively washing your sins away.

But read on, "But ye are not IN theflesh, but in the spirit, JF so hf' that theSpirit of God dwell in you. Now if anyman have not the Spirit of Christ, heis none of His!"

Do you see? Unless we have theSpirit of Christ, the very mind, nature, the attitude, of Jesus Christ (Phil. 2: 5)we ARE NONE OF HJS!

But Jesus is HEAD OF THE CHURCH!"God gave Him to be the HEAD overall things to the Church, which is HISBODY ... " (Eph. 1:22-23). (See alsoEph. 5:23 and CoL 1: 18.)

To become one of His-we become aMEMBER OF HIS BODY-the Church!

Baptized into The Church

By the receiving of God's Holy Spirit!Peter promised, as inspired by God's

Spirit, " .. , and ye shall receive theGIFT of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2: 38) .God's Spirit is given to them that OBEYHis commands (Acts 5: 32 ) .

Now notice this vital scripture: "Forby one Spirit are we all BAPTIZED intoone body"! (I Cor. 12:13.)

There it is! By receiving God's promised Holy Spirit AFTER water baptism,by becoming a very CHILD of God,partaking of HIS DIVJNE NATURE (1Pet. 1:4), we are BAPTIZED INTO THEVERY CHURCH OF GOD!

This is the true "baptism of theSpirit." This is what ADDS us to theChurch, it is what PLUNGES US INTO,IMMERSES us into the very body ofChrist-the Church-s-which does thework of Christ'

What Is MODERN EDUCATION?Here is the Basic Philosophy underlying modern education!IV-here, when, by whom did it originate? Here is the answer from

the English Department at Ambassador.

D o YOU KNOW what modern educators teach? Most people assume they reach your children

the way to a happy abundant life. Mostassume they build the right character inthe EAGER minds of your children. Thatthey teach your children to know God.

But none of these assumptions arerrue!

What MODERN Educators Believe

Leading American educators believein a type of "FREE ACTIVITY" in whichthe child is allowed to develop by doing as he pleases. They teach your children to believe that the child can CREATE his own TRUTH by determiningthrough his own EXPERIENCE-what hewants to accept as truth. The child istaught to evaluate human experiencesolely by its "pragmatic value," that isWHAT USE IS IT TO THE SELF?

In PLAIN ENGLISH-your child isTAUGHT to ask, "WHAT'S in it for ME?'This training turns his thoughts inwardupon the SELF, and upon what the SELFdesires.

Here is one of the root causes ofjuvenile delinquency.

These misguided public educatorsteach your children that there is noliTERNAL truth. They claim that truthis changing and evolving as MAN isgrowing better and better and discovering more knowledge.

The false idea that there is no EternalTRUTH purposely attempts to abolishthe Bible as an authority. God's Lawcannot be a changing standard. God cannot be a changing God.

If God were ever to change, wheredoes that leave us? God has made usmany promises in His Bible. If He isa changing God, we have no hope thatHe will ever keep them; we have nohope of Eternal Salvation. The falsedoctrine of no eternal truth wouldeliminate all hope and trust in theTRUE God and His Word!

Take away the FIXED standard ofright and wrong-take away God's Lawand there is nothing to keep a childfrom turning to the self, to what theself desires.

Bluntly, MODERN EDUCATORS do notknow God. They do not know HisWAYS (Rom. 1: 25 ). But where didthey get their false principles of education?

by Lynn Torrance

Education Before the Flood

The Basic Philosophy underlyingmodern education is as OLD as the FIRSTLIE! In FACT it is the FIRST LIE.

The FANTASTIC philosophy of themodern educators began wnen SATANtaught Adam and Eve that they coulddecide for themselves what was goodand what was Evil, and that they couldbe as God (Gen. 3:4, 5).

He led them to believe that they couldlive forever by replacing their sourceof knowledge and POWER-their CREATOR-with HUMAN REASON!

Let us UNDERSTAND! Satan attemptedto REPLACE God with REASON, andTRUTH with self-will (Rom. 6:16).

TRUTH became to man a matter ofHIS OWN opinion and the need forChrist was obviated. A RELIGION ofeducation was established, with its substitute savior-HUMAN REASON.

God tells us plainly that before the"flood" the "wickedness of man wasgreat in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart wasonly evil continually" (Gen. 6:5) .

This "imagination of the thoughts ofhis heart" was the result of substituting reason for God, and self-will fortruth. What was God's judgment againstthem? "This is the Eternal's word: ACURSE on him who RELIES on man, andLEANS upon mere human aid, turninghis thoughts from the Eternal" (Jcr.17: 5, Moffatt trans.).

Education After the Flood

Ever since the FLOOD, this world'seducators have been deceiving man intobelieving this same atrocious lie-thattruth is left to the determination ofman. This philosophy of Satan was reestablished in ancient Babylon. Fromthere it was carried to the Greeks bythe Egyptians. The Greeks used thisfalse philosophy as the foundation oftheir own Hellenistic Educational Culture.

They turned to the philosophersmen who KNEW NOT God-to find outabout God. These pagan philosopherstaught that there is no ETERNAL truth, that truth is a matter of choice-therebyeliminating the true God from theireducational sysrem.

Could ANYTHING be clearer? Whenmen turn away from God by looking

Il'ithill THEMSELVES for the answers oflife-all they are going to find is themselves-their own human reason, andwhatever answers they want to believein.

Ancient "Modernists"

After the DEATH of the APOSTLES"the mystery of iniquity" began openlyto permeate the true Church. Thosethat remained faithful to God weregradually excommunicated, leaving theforefathers of the Catholic Church incontrol (II Thess. 2: 1-10 ). Now theywere FREE to begin to teach in theChurch that a Christian should have theeducation. and "CULTURE" of theGreek world.

Tertullian, one of the early CatholicFathers, told parents to send their children to Greek schools. He explainedthat they should accept the "good" andreject the evil (Smith, Dictionary ofChristian Antiquities, article "Schools") .The ABSURDITY of such thinking isSHOCKING! It is absolutely impossiblefor the young uneducated child to discern what is the "good" and what isthe evil in the subtitles of Greek philosophy! How many of you profess tohave such a discerning mind? Thendo your children! Of course not!

The "Good" in Greek Philosophy

The early Catholic Church fathersfound much "good" in Greek philosophy.Clement said that Greek philosophycame from God to man (The AnteN icene Fathers, Vol. 2, p. 308). Hewrote, "PHILOSOPHY was given to theGreeks as a schoolmaster to bring theHellenic mind . . . to Christ" and thatit is now a kind of "preparatory training to those who attain the faith throughdemonstration" (p. 305). (By "demonstration" he meant reasoning).

Such teaching is directly CONTRARy to the WORD of God. Godreveals that: ..... the holy scriptures[not human reasoning} are able to makethee wise unto salvation through faithwhich is in Christ Jesus" (II Tim.3: 15).

Where in your Bible can you findthat Greek philosophy is able to makeyou wise unto salvation?

Clement of Alexandria and modernday psychologists have much in common. Clement believed that Adam had

Page 7: How to Get Out of DEBT - Herbert W. Armstrong News 1… · How to Get Out of DEBT Money problems trouble more people than any other single problem, including health. Here's why, and

a perfect ability to dererrnme what was"good" and what was evil. He reasonedthat God expects us to find happinessand Eternal Life through our own efforts (Hagenbach, History of Voctrines, p. 158).

Origin also would have made a good"PROGRESSiVE EJHJCATOR." He taughtthat man was good and that this "inherent goodness" is only to be developedby instruction. He reasoned that ifGod had given mall an evil nature, then God would appear as an unjustjudge of His own creation (History ofDoctrines, Vol. 1, p. 150).

Origin decided to believe that Godcould not have given man an evil human nature which he could not overcome. He thought that a loving Godwould not condemn a man for failingto overcome these strong human tendencies. It pleased Origin to call man"good."

Origin, just like the MODERN DAYEDUCATORS, completely ignored thetruth of God: that for a very great purpose, God decreed that before man can"OVERCOME," he MUST accept JesusChrist as his Savior, he MUST REPENT,and he must be baptized to receivethe POWER of the Holy Spirit-thePOWER that overcomes our filthy, rotten human nature. He COMPLETELY ignored the fact that God gave us thishumanly unconquerable carnal natureas a POSITIVE GUARANTEE that CHARACTER can never be developed by turning to the god of human reason. "Forto be carnally minded is death . . . "(Rom. 8:6).

Now you can understand what happened. The early Catholic Church fathers followed "the way that seernethright to a man." They accepted so much"good" from PAGAN Greek philosophythat they soon had little, if any, truthleft. As an example: They wanted tobelieve that it was "good" to do awaywith God's Holy Days-they sneeringlycalled them "Jewish." As a result theylost the Plan of God, the Plan of Salvation, the PURPOSE for LIFE. They decided that it would be "good" to substitute the worship of Satan's "fooldays," Hallowe'en, Christmas, and Easter-for God's Holy Days. They reasoned that the holidays upon which thepAGANS worshipped SATAN would be"good" if they bur changed their names, and called them Christian-instead ofPAGAN. They also reasoned that to gainsalvation one should study the PAGANGreek philosophers (WHO NEVER asmuch as heard of the TRUE God). Theyaccepted the idea that they had the right(() call whatever they wanted to believe-the "truth of Jesus Christ."

Satan's ministers of today are an ex-

act unage of their self-willed forefathers. Rather than obey God, they studywhat men have said about the Biblenever reading the Bible to see for themselves what God has said.

Teachers of the Middle Ages

The thinkers of the Middle Agesweren't to be outdone by their forefathers. They took special pains to revive the study of the evil philosophy ofthe Pagan Greeks.

You will find these REVEALING statements in the Catholic Encyclopedia(p. 303, Vol. 5): "Men of faith andlearning like Alberrus Magnus andThomas Aquinas taught Christians tomake the Greek philosophy the . .basis of belief." ... "Having used thesubtitles of Greek thought to sharpenthe student's mind, the Church thereupon presented to him her dogmaswithout the least fear of contradiction."

Now we begin to understand whythe Catholic Church leaders did notFEAR that the scholar would REJECTthe MOTHER Church, after having studied Greek philosophy! The teaching ofthe Pagan Greeks was so similar to theteaching of the Catholic Church-thatto ACCEPT one was to ACCEPT the other!

Even to this very day-Satan inspiresthe leaders of many famous well-knowncolleges of religion to require thattheir students study Greek philosophybefore they ever study theology. SATANknows that the student who has had hismind corrupted by PHILOSOPHY cannot UNDERSTAND truth.

What Is Modern Education?

The "Schoolmen" of the Reformation accepted as "good" the belief inthe worth of the individual, as taughtby the Greek philosophers-especiallySocrates and Plato. They accepted andtaught that each man could achieve thebeautiful and happy life through SELFdevelopment-just exactly the oppositeto the TRUTH that Jesus Christ revealed. You are to crttcify the self-not developit!

Modern education, even though itmay claim to be divorced from organized religion, teaches the same atrociouslie that Satan's SLAvES have alwaystaught-that man can decide for himself what is good and what is evil. Theearly Catholic Church fathers called thisphilosophy "Christian," the SCHOLARSof today call it "progressive education;"nevertheless, it is still the same old lieSatan taught Adam and Eve.

The god of modern education is human reason; and its high priest, Satan. Its founding fathers are those of theCatholic Church and the Greek philos-

ophers who taught that man came totruth through REASON.

Modern education is a religion, thesame religion Satan has been teachingman since the days of Adam and Eve(Gen. 3:4, 5), the religion of rebellionagainsr the LAWS of God Aimightythe religion of believing whatever seemsgood to you-just as long as you labelit Christian!

The Churches of this world have utterly failed to find the answer to "ThePlan of Salvation," and "Why we wereborn?" Similarly their GODLESS, confused, arheisric cohorts - the modern educators-have chosen to believethat it is "good" to GUESS that Out ofnothing came great quantities of matter, and that by accident precise LAWS,governing this matter, came into being! They beueve it is logical to guess thatheat, light, and energy just happenedinto existence.

They have decided it is also "good"to guess that the amoeba evolved fromdead, lifeless matter-into all [he formsat life we know today. Upon such apreposterous foundation of GUESSES-modern educators build their beliefthat man is all the god there is.

These great SCHOLARS are so proudof their guesses that they assume a wiseand dignified look and inform the worldthat these great guesses were discoveredthrough painstaking, scientific research.

This nation's FOREMOST educator,Lawrence G. Derrhick, recently said,"Modern EDUCAnON is the ONEGREAT FORCE to lift mankind HIGHER!" And: "MODERN EDUCATION is aseed which can provide UNLIMITEDGROWTH, from which when planted, fertilized, plowed, and nurtured, wereap a MYSTIC yield-a power of understanding resourcefulness, ability, integrity, culture and development-theproduct of which creates markets, MAGNiFiES industry and multiplies the fruitsof freedom in terms of IMPROvEDHEALTH, BETTER GOVERNMENT, HIGHER STANDARDS of LIvING and GREATERUNDERSTANDING of MORAL and SPIRITUAL VALUES."

Prominent educators loudly proclaimtheir glowing tributes to the marvelousbenefits of modern progressive education-when the newspapers of this nation blare out in BANNER HEADLINESthe proof that juvenile crime is mounting at an alarming rate, and is growinginto a FRANKENSTEIN monster thatTHREATENS the very life of this nation,We are being destroyed from within bythis moral breakdown resulting frommodern education.

What can you do to prou:u your children from these diabolical DOCTRINES?

Be a POSITIVE ChristianHavillg trouble with your neighbors? WHY? This will show youthe REASON, and give you a POSITIVE PLAN to guide you inliving the happy, abundant, and exemplary life that God intended.

by Roderick C. Meredith

EN RAGED at the evangelists, the furious bloodthirsty mob broughtthem to the city officials crying,

'These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also" (Acts17:6).

With these words, the angry Jews atThessalonica accused the apostle Pauland his helpers of the very same thingof which many of you have been accused. Does true Christianity turn theworld "upside down," or right side uP?ls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of a peculiarmixture of misgaided religious zeal, unreasoned superstition, and a rebellious, tttitude toward custom, society, andother people in general? Is this the attitude of a good Christian?

Let's face facts! Some of our brethrenhave been accused of such wrong attitudes and conduct. Sometimes the accusation is clearly false, but sometimesit is based on fact!

How should Christians live to gainthe respect of unconverted neighborsand friends? In spite of persecutions, how can we live the joyous, fruitfulkind of lives that we should?

Let's look into God's Word for theanswers, and use sound-minded wisdomin applying the principles containedthere.

Are You a "Light"?

Jesus told His disciples, "Ye are thelight of the world." And later, "Letyour light so shine before men, thatthey may see your good works, andglorify your Father which is in heaven"(Mat. 5:14,16). Jesus taught that weare not to pur our light under a bushel, bur on a candlestick where all can see.Bur how do we let our "light" shine before men?

Notice that Jesus said men wouldsee our good works and glorify God(verse 16). He didn't say that theywould hear our constant prating aboutthe Bible. Our "good works," our kindness and thottghtfulness to others, ourwillingness to Jacrifice, our Christicm ex.nnple in daily living, these things willcause even unconverted men to admireClod respect us. Eventually, they willrealize that it is God who is helping uslive this way. Then they will glorify Him.

But arguing, disputing, and trying to"convince" people they are wrong isnowhere referred to as "good works." Ifa friend or relative isn't interested in

God's truth, they will in no way behelped if you constantly plague themwith what they regard as "your religion."It is certainly not the religion of JesusChrist! That is not the kind of examplethat He set.

Remember that men will glorify Godbecause of your good works," not because of what you say. What type ofgood toorks should you demonstrate 10

this modern day?

Christian Works

In John 14: 11, Jesus said, "Relieveme that I am in the Father, and theFather in me: or else believe me forthe very works' Jake." He was referringto the miracles which He performed, and said in verse 12 that one who trulybelieved on him would perform evengreater works.

Most of Jesus' miraculous works wereacts of kindness to otherJ-healing thesick, feeding the multitudes, casting ourunclean spirits. Paul wrote the Corinthian brethren, "Now ye are the BODYof Christ, and members in particular"(I Cor. 12:27).

Today, Jesus is not here to performgood works in person, bur we of God'strue Church comprise His body throughwhich He can and does perform miraculous works. Many times, unconvertedfriends of our brethren have beenforced to glorify God and His powerwhen they have witnessed a genuine, miraculous healing according to God'spromise.

The Church of God is Christ's instrument to preach the true gospel as awitness to all the world, to feed the[Jock, to heal the sick, cast out demons, and exercise all the other gifts of God'sSpirit. By each of us drawing closer toGod in diligent Bible study, earnestprayer, and fasting, we shall receive theFOWER to carry out our mission in a waythat men cannot help bur notice. In thedays of the apostles, God, "confirmedthe word with Ji!iflJ following" (Mark16:20).1£ we draw as close to God aswe should, if we "hunger and thirstafter righteousness," He will grant usthe power to do the same miraculousworks as the early apostles, and manyothers will learn to glorify God.

But aside from these miraculous worksof the ministry, there are many, manythings that we should all be doing toglorify God in our lives. What are these?

Be a Good Neighbor

One of the 1110st beautiful parables ofJesus that we all learned as a child, butsometimes seem to forget as an adultChristian, is the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). It is thestory of one man, a priest, who thoughthe was too holy or too important to bebothered with helping a poor fellowwho had been set upon by thieves, andwas lying wounded and suffering by theroadside. It also portrays the splendid, unselfish compassion of the Samaritan. He was not too "good" to help even awretched fellow in trouble whom hehad never seen before.

Notice Jesus' instruction: "Go, anddo thou likewise."

Just how good a neighbor are YOU~

This is a vitally IMPORTANT factor indetermining your ability to be a "light"to others and, incidentally, in determining your own happineSJ.

You should realize from the outset

that carnal-minded friends and neighbors are jUJt naturally going to have abad opinion of you-a true Christiantrying to keep all of God's commandsagainst which their carnal mind rebels. They are going to look upon you as"peculiar" or "fanatic" unless you takepositive action to counteract this attitude.

To separate yourself from worldlyfellowship and participation in politicsand pagan customs, you may have todrop out of any lodges, clubs, religiousor political organizations of which youmay be a member. You may be regardedas a "quitter." You will be accused ofnot loving your fellow man-and manyother charges will be laid at your doorstep.

The SOLUTION to this problem is toprove by positive ACTION that thesethings are not true. Go our of your wayto be a really wonderful neighbor. Remember that Jesus said, "It is moreblessed to GIVE than to receive" (Acts20:35).

The chief attributes of God's HolySpirit are loue, joy, peace, long-suffering(Gal. 5:22). Put the love of God towork in your life. Try to be understanding, patient, and always ready to

be of service to others. Cultivate theattitude of joy and peace at all times.Try to make others feel bappy ill yourpresence.

God is more willing to give you ofHis Spirit-His 101e, joy, and peacethan you are to feed your own hungrychildren. ASK GOD to help you showmore love-to give you HtJ IOlJe-andto help you be a better neighbor inevery way.

Then, with GOlI"S help, MAKE yourneighbors like and respect you by your"good works"-your kindness, love, willingness to help in time of need. Thiswill neuer be accomplished by yourwords, but by your ACTIONS.

Be Positive

One of the most striking mistakes ofsome new converts is their failure toshow a positii» attitude toward life. Because they have come to realize thatmuch of this world is wrong, they assume a negative attitude toward life ingeneral. They don't take a real interestin their family, their friends, or theircommunity. Is this the way to be a"light"-the kind of example otherswill admire?

Nu. Instead of being agaimt everything, strive to be for something. Havea positive program of developing yourpersonality, your capabilities, your ability to help and influence other people forgood.

James tells us, "Hath not God chosenrhe poor of this world rich in faith?"(James 2: 5). Many of us arc poor, humble people when God calls us. Somehave not had many educational opport uniries, and are handicapped in theirspeech and writing, their knowledge ofthis world about us, and in many of thesocial graces.

Docs God wish us to remain this way?First of all, we have to confess that

if we held all been highly successful inrhis world, we would have been toO

proud to accept God's truth and be converted. We would have had too muchSELF confidence to recognize our needfor God. But !lOW that should all be(hanged. Now our confidence shouldrest in God, and u-b.tr He can do throughlIS if we yield to His Spirit. Now thatour confidence about any abilities restsin God-not self-wouldn't He wantus to develop these'

Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heavenis perfect" (Mat. 5:48). Weare tostrive to become like God in elJery Wely.'Through God's help, we will finallyachieve this goal when we are finallyhom of God in the resurrection.

Jesus was God in the flesh-setting aperfect exmllple for us to follow. DidJesus usc sloppy speech or dress? DidHe appear "'hackwoodsie" or uncouth to

him wimess, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of hismouth." They were forced to admireJesus' ability in speech even though theylater condemned what he said and triedto throw him off the brow of a hill!(verse 29).

rn reading the gospels, it is easy to

discern that Jesus was a natural leaderof men. He was a person that peoplewould naturally be forced to admireeven though the Jews hated what Hetau, ght so much that they crucified Him.

Are you developing the qualities ofpersonality, of leadership? Are you ableto deal with and influence people ofall classes? The apostle Paul said, "I ammade all things to all men, that I mightby all means save some" (Acts 9: 22) .

You should try to do your work thebest way possible, to keep your homeand yard looking as neat and clean aspossible, to dress as well as possiblewithin your means. You should studyto use really good English, to broadenyour interests and your general knowledge, to develop your personality andabilities in every way. God says to deielop your talents-to be like Him inevery way! If you do these things, yourneighbors will notice the change forgood in your life and will be forced torespect you more.

Show them a POSITIVE life of ouercoming selfishness, of growing in graceand knowledge, of being an example oflove and service to those about you.

With these new interests and abilities, with the joy that comes from actively helping others, your life shouldbe more exciting, more full and abundant, than ever before. And you can goahead in full FAITH that God haspromised to help you grow more likeHim by guiding you, blessing and protecting you, through His Spirit.

Show Common Sense

Many fail to realize that, "God hathnot given us the spirit of fear; but ofPOWER, and of LOVE, and of a SOUNDMIND" (II Timothy 1: 7). Instead ofdemonstrating these qualities in theirlives, they proceed in a hesitant, apologetic, or sometimes a belligerent attirude to try to "talk people into" some oftheir beliefs.

Humanly, we all tend to do thesethings, and it is hard to overcome them. But God has given us the spirit ofPOWER to do so!

From now on, instead of being "downon the world" in all of yom ta Ik and actions, try to show the world by actionthat you have found something better,Show your neighbors that your faithii/arks for good by doing guud LO them.

Through God's Spirit within you, live up to what you believe and set a

shining example before others. They maynot agree with all your doctrine) butthey will respect the results you achievein yon, life.

Make an exciting game out of Iifeout of overcoming yourself and all theobstacles in the world. Accept yourselfas a bundle of possibilities-the soft, pliable clay Out of which God, the Supreme Potter-can fashion a characterand personality worthy of et erna! lifein His kingdom.

Try hard NOT to give others the impression that you are "queer," or "peculiar." Y'onr job is to show them theSpirit of a SOUND MIND in everythingyou do. If people do ask you questionsconcerning your belief - which theywill if you are living it-be preparedby diligent study to give them the answer in a non-argumentative, clear, andcommon-sense way. Show them thatGod's way makes sense-and is basedon a law of love which would preventwar, murder and most of humanity'stroubles, if it were only taught andobeyed. But only tell people what theyask you about, Don't try to force newtruth upon them. Just show them byyour words and ACTIONS that God's wayis based on common sense and a soundmind,

Continually ask God for the love, faith, and wisdom to be a POSITIVEChristian. Put a smile on your face, pullback your shoulders, and hold your headhigh as you step forward to meet theworld with God's LOVE in your hearttoward everyone, with His FAITH andPOWER to show others a positive example of the blessing that comes froma life of love and service, and with theSpirit of a SOUND MIND that you maydemonstrate by your actions that God'sway is best, and could bring happinessto everyone.

Even though you will still be persecuted by many, this positive attitudein Christian living will gain you newrespect in your community. You maythen be a pOJitilie influence for good.More important, this way of living faithand action will give your own life moremeaning, interests, and joy, and will prepare you to better serve as a King andPriest under Christ throughout life eternal. Use it.

But this is not all!NOTICE: "And ye shall teach [the

Commandments} them [to} your chilchen, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thouwalkesr by the way, when thou liestdown, and when thou risest up."

Come Out of Sin

Before you can begin to train yourchildren-you must CAST out of yourmind the LIE that the human natureyour child has is so good that he willdevelop best if you will turn him looseand let nature take its course. Cast outof your mind the lie that you must notforce your child to obey, lest you warphis character (Deut. 21: 18-21 ).

Cast out of your mind the false teaching of PROGRESSIVE EDUCATORS whoteach that you must nor obey the command of the CREATOR God to trainyour children in the WAY that theyshould go. They tell you to rely on..trained reachcrsi-c-who teach yourchildren that they have the RIGHT todecide for themselves that the lies ofChristmas and Easter are truth, andthat the TRUTH of God is a lie.

Instead, teach your children the Commandments of the Almighty God. Teachthem that the LIES they learn in SCHOOLarc LIES. FIND OUT what they are beingtaught.

The Cult of High-Sounding Phrases

Furthermore, STOP worshipping important people who can spout fancysounding phrases.

For example: You parents who havebeen teachers-have heard the modernday philosophy of education expressedthis way by your college instructors:"We believe in a type of FREE ACTIVITYin which the child is allowed to develop by doing. The child is thus allowed to discover his OWN TRUTH andDETERMINE its validity, UNAIDED bythe teacher and independent of all TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY. [By traditionalauthority, they mean to include theLaws of God}. The child is stimulatedto self-activity while 'learning by doing,' in an environment that is 'NOT A

by FREE MORAL EXPERIENCE! Hemeant that character in your childrenis built by sowing wild oats. That isanother way of saying--eharacter isbuilt by BREAKING GOD'S LAW!

Such trash is called philosophy. Areyou guilty in standing in AWE of DECEIVERS who spout such educatedphrases? God says, "You are relying onfalse phrases, to no profit ... " (Jer.7: 8, Moffatt trans.).

Yes, that is exactly the reason manyof you are having trouble with yourchildren-you are relying on MAN, youare relying on human reason, instead ofGod.

Do you YIELD to believing these lies?Be honest! Before you answer, ask yourself, "Did I yield to letting my chilodo what he wanted to do today-againstmy better judgmenr-c-j us'r TO KEEPHIM HAPPY?" "Did my child do everylhing that I told him to do, IMMEDIATELY, the first time I told him?" "Doesmy child ever talk back to me when Itell him to do something?" Examineyourself!

What Can You Do?

MAKb your children do what you tellthem to do, without question, immediately.

Don't let your children talk back toyou. If you want their opinion, ask forit. If you don't, teach them to RESPECTyour AUTHORITY by making them keepstill.

Be diligent in this and your childrenwill have security. They will alwaysknow what you are going to do. Theywill learn to LOVE and RESPECT you. They will be HAPPY. They will learnto love and obey God. "Happy is thatpeople ... whose God is the LORD"(Ps. 144: 15) .

Teach your children to know whatthey should do; how to obey. And ifthey will not obey, punish them untilthey will CHOOSE to obey rather thantake any more punishment. With somecbildren-just a word will suffice, whileother children may require a few swatswith a paddle before they will chooseto obey your commands-rather than toreceive any more swats. But it will work.Ask God for WISDOM (James 1: 5) andHe will freely give.

Finally, it has been suggested thatwe can teach our children to respect usand to obey us by having a morningworship time with the whole family forat least 15 to 20 minutes a morning.(See The Good News, April, 1960,Article-"Worship God-TOGETHER!")

Your Responsibilities as a Member

As a MEMBER of the Church of God,you have certain definite RESPONSIBILITIES to perform. God requires the carrying out of these duties and responsibilities. In it, you willsee how God says regardless of WHOyou are, WHERE you are-whetherhousewife, executive, truck driver, pensioner, widow, or WHAT you are-YOUHAVE A DEFINITE JOB TO PERFORM!

Your Job as a Member

Jesus Christ has COMMiSSIONED Hisbody to perform a gigantic task ofpreaching this Gospel of the Kingdomto all the world as a witness. It is anoverwhelming, frighteningly huge JOB!It takes many, many laborers to accomplish it!

Paul explains how the very smallest, poorest, weakest member of all, the"little toe" of the human body, nevertheless performs a vital, important, necessary PART!

YOUR PERSONAL PART in the Churchof God is manyfold! God requires thatyou pay HIS TITHES, and your own liberal and generous offerings besides, toHis headquarters-for the furtheranceof the Gospel work. He REQUIRES thatyou not only spend much time in Biblestudy, but also especially in constant, earnest, prevailing PRAYER, with FASTING occasionally, for the needs of thework, for other members, for His ministers. uf his farm work. These arc a few of the many exam

ples that come to our attention, Thereis no end to the financial problems thatour people have, or have had, mainlythrough lack of proper understanding, proper foresight, and proper planning.

Some of these cases are practicallybeyond repair. The individuals involvedmust either start life afresh, losingeverything they have; or they must remain in debt for years, slowly climbingour of the financial pit; or they mustupon careful legal counsel and adviceby a competent individual or ministerin the Church-commence bankruptcyproceedings.

No matter if you are beginning to~ct into financial trouble or are deepin financial trouble, the first thing todo is to seek proper financial advice.I personally find that more people arein need of financial advice than adviceon health! Many ministers in the Churchhave found the same thing true of theirareas.

This condition should not be-yet it isbecause we have never been taught theseven principles governing financialprosperity.

The Seven Principles

Many businessmen who know nothingabout the Bible fully understand six ofthe seven principles regulating theirprosperity. That is why they are financial successes. But without that seventhpr incip!c. many a businessman has commitred suicide in the face of sudden, unexpected adversity.

By contrast, not a few converted people know only one rule of financial success and are practically failures in life.Their only hope of deliverance lies beyond the grav<:! This should not be.

Here is rule nzanber one; PUT SPIRITuxr. THINGS FIRST, Jesus explained it:

The GOOD NEWS

"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, andHis righteousness; and all these thingsshall be added unto you" (Mat. 6: 33 ) ,

This is the one principle most prosperous people are unacquainted with. Itis often the only principle that Christians, who seek a knowledge of God,have ever understood.

This principle, if applied, is anabsolute guarantee against starvationand grinding poverty. A knowledge ofthis principle is often the only reasonthat poor people are able to keep uptheir heads in the face of adversity,

Ignorance of this one principle is thevery reason that many wealthy individuals, in the unexpected moment of adversity, commit suicide, Newspapers arefull of such cases-men and women whoknow all the other rules of success, butwho have no mainstay in times of adversity.

This first financial principle assumesyOll follow God's law of tithing whichbrings a promise from God to supplyyour needs. IF YOU SEEK FIRST THEKINGDOM OF GOD-His laws and government, you will naturally obey the lawof tithing.

BUT the degree to iobicb God willprosper you and supply YOllr needs depends on how tborongbly yOll seek rindfollow the other laws of His Kingdom-the other six principles reglllatingYOllr financial life!

The Other Six Rules

Everyone of these other six financialrules of success is found in the bookof Proverbs, though they may be repeated elsewhere. It is not uncommonfor businessmen to have a copy of thebook of Proverbs handy at home or inthe office. These principles are oftenhanded down to succeeding generationsin business operations.

Here they are:Rule number two; DO NOT BE A

QUITTER,Many a failure occurs because an in

dividual gives up when there is stillhope of success. Just a little more effort can often turn apparent defeat intosuccess. Solomon was inspired to write:"If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small" (Prov.24: 10). Does debt seem overwhelming?Don't quit. Keep working. Keep thinking. Keep planning. See your employer.See your creditor. Talk )'0111' problemover with them. Don't sit at home andsay, "It's no use!"

If you have lost your job, hit thepavement. Find work. There is llO

excuse for unemployment. Buy a newspaper. Look in the "Help Wanted" section, or in the "Employment Opportunities" section, Go to an employment

Page 11

agency as a last resort. Too many areatraid to look for a job. They faint atthe thought of being turned down. Solomon said: "If you faint"-give up, quit, feel like a failure-you don't have anybackbone, any fortitude, any strength.

I know a man in the Los Angelesarea who suddenly lost a job throughno fault of his own, His creditors immediately jumped on him. He did notquit. He rustled up two jobs in orderto meet his payments. He went to workat two jobs for many months until hegot out from under his debt load.

Some of you may be in an unemployment area. If so, the husband andfather ought to go elsewhere and findwork-taking his family with him after, not before, he has located and obtaineda suitable job. There is always worksomewhere, It is a matter of not quitting until you find it!

Rule number tbree: BE DILIGENT,not slothful in your work.

Two different places in Proverbs isthis rule repeated: "He thou diligent to

know the state of thy flocks, and lookwell to thy herds [or whatever your occupation may be]: for riches are notfor ever' (Prov, 27:23-24). And again:"1 went by the field of the slothful, andby the vineyard of the man void of understanding: and, 10, it was all grownover with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wallthereof was broken down , , , so shallpoverty come ..... (Prov. 21:3034).

Haven't you seen small businessesthat had the same general appearancesas that farm Solomon saw. And howmany small farms look like this proverbtoday. Too many of God's people areslothful in their occupation. They arelazy and apparently do not know it!And how many workers are just asslothful, lying down on the job, seeking coffee breaks, tea breaks or whatever it may be.

You will never be a financial success unless you are diligent in yourwork. I know several men who receiveemployment practically anywhere simply because they were diligent in theirwork. Even if they were not trained fora particular job, employers know theywould be worth training. Unfortunatelysome use lack of training as an excusefor lack of effort, an excuse to coverslothfulness.

Here is another proverb on this samesubject: "Seesr thou a man diligent inhis business? he shall stand before kings;he shall not stand before mean men"(Prov. 22:29). Paul makes this a NewTestament command in Rom, 12: l l .

Seek Advice

The next rule to remember is this.SEEK ADVICE: do not be self-wise.

Page 12: How to Get Out of DEBT - Herbert W. Armstrong News 1… · How to Get Out of DEBT Money problems trouble more people than any other single problem, including health. Here's why, and

Page 12

Notice how this fourth rule followson the heels of the preceding one."Seesr thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool thanof him . . . The sluggard is wiser inhis own conceit than seven men thatcan render a reason" (Prov.26:12-16).

And again these short proverbs:" . . . Cease from thine own wisdom... Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge" (Prov. 23:4-12).

The wise person profits by others, rather than listening to himself all thetime. It is the know-it-all who reallyknows nothing. You will always meetsome man in your life who knowsmore than you do in some particularfield. Listen to him. Weigh his advice.Don't act hastily on it. It could bewrong. It might not apply to your case. But above all do not take your ownjudgment for granted or be conceitedin your past experience.

Know your limitations and yourstrong points.

Another mistake often made is listening to the man who talks the loudestor seems the most persuasive. Do notjudge your advisors by their floweryphrases. Find the man who has plain"common sense"-which gift is altogether toO rare. Do not seek advice ofthe man who will flatter you. Literallydozens of proverbs in the Bible warnagainst the man who flatters his hearers.

find the man who will tell youthe truth. If a man is willing to tell youthe truth about your financial position, listen to him. He is probably right. Ifhe leads you to see what poor judgment you have used, he is most certainly right! Without advisors and counsellors, businesses, as well as nations, collapse.

Rule number five: HAVE FORESIGHT.Everyone needs to develop thoughtful

regard and make provision for the future. Hind sight is not enough. Noticethe proverb: "A prudent man foreseeththe evil, and hideth himself: but thesimple pass on, and are punished"(Prov.22:3).

Is a lay-off in your factory aroundthe corner? Make provision in adtrance to meet the emergency. See thatanother job will be available. Have alittle handy cash on hand. Above allDO NOT PLUNGE INTO DEBT WITHOUTMAKING ABSOLUTELY SURE YOUR JOBIS SECURE. And do not tie up what youalready own as security unless you arewilling and able to lose it if an unforeseen emergency arises. Some have foolishly tied up their car as security forfurniture. They lost their job, couldnot meet furniture payments, lost possession of the car and NOW BAVE NO

MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO ANDFROM WORK.

It is easy to put all your savings intoa nice home on the assumption that allwill be fine, that no small amount ofsavings will be needed. Remember thisproverb: "Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field;and afterwards build thine house"(Prov. 24:27). Spend your money foreducation, training, tools, job improvement. Then, when you are qualified tohold down a good job, and have hadthe foresight to save some money foremergencies, is the time to enjoy thepleasure of building a home for thefamily. Do not put your pleasures first. This does not mean that a convertedhusband and father should neglect thehome where his wife-especially if sheis unconverted-must spend much ofher time.

Some unwise men have been so illprepared to make a living for theirfamily that they have allowed theirwives to hold down a job to help buyfurniture for their home. This shouldnever be.

Final Two Rules

Although many of us would find thelast two rules of rarer use, a lack oftheir knowledge could spell immediatedisaster jf we become confronted withthe problems which they cover.

Here is rule number six: DO NOTTRY A GET-RICH-QUICK SCHEME. Inthe first place, Solomon warns us; "Labour not to be rich" (Prov.23:4).

God wants us to prosper, but to berich is another matter. We have heardmany schemes of people who intendedto supply a large part of their profitsto pay for all the radio work--or allthe cost of publication, etc. God doesnot finance His work that way. Heworks through many individuals together-His Church-made up of thousands of members.

All get-rich-quick schemes are basically selfish. The way to prosper is towork diligently, plan ahead, investwisely-not follow some wild projectfor which one has no training, no matter how easy it sounds. Money doesnot come easily. It comes throughwork. "He that tilleth his land shallhave plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall havepoverty enough"-and quite often bankruptcy (Prov. 28:19). And notice thenext verses: "A faithful man shall aboundwith blessings: but he that makethhaste to be rich shall not be innocent... He that hasrerh to be rich ... considereth not that poverty shall comeupon him."

Lay aside your earnings little by little, until you have enough to meet your

August, 1960

emergencies. Remember the ant!And the seventh rule: DO NOT MAKE

YOURSELF LIABLE FOR ANOTHER'SDEBTS. "Be not thou one of them . . .that are surenes for debts. It thou hastnothing to pay, why should he takeaway thy bed from under thee?" (Prov.22:26-27).

To be surety for a debt means tomake yourself responsible for another'sdebts. Some people are "easy marks"others always take advantage of them.If you are not financially able to paythe full amount of another's debt, donot sign a paper or promise to coverdefaults of obligations. Many have notonly lost their beds, but also their shirtsby this mistake! And finally noticeProverbs 11: 15: "He that is surety fora stranger shall smart for it; and hethat hateth suretyship is sure."

Brethren, these are living financiallaws. These principles have been governing your life whether or nor youhave known of them. Some of you areneedlessly poor because you havebeen heedless of these laws. Others ofyou are now so deep in debt that youface a lifelong uphill climb.

Some have assumed that if they paidtheir tithes honestly after conversionthat that would undo all their past mistakes. Brethren this is untrue.

Obedience to the law docs not payfor your past mistakes. Christ's bloodpays for past mistakes. God forgivesyou for breaking these laws in the past-but the physical penalty of debt stillremains. Remember that God forgaveDavid for adultery, yet his child-theresult of that one act of adulterydied. There is often a physical or financial penalty to be paid to men andsociety even though God has forgivenyou of your transgression.

Tithing enables you to have God'shelp henceforth. And many of youneed that help dearly to square your pastdebts with men. But tithing is not theonly principle regulating prosperity, there are six other rules.

Unless your creditors cancel yourdebts, you still owe them. They are to

be paid. The world, of course, knowsnothing about releasing a debtor inthe seventh year. See Deuteronomy 15.Unfortunately some of you brethrenare being kept under an unnecessaryfinancial penalty because you are notbeing released from past financial obligation as God's law requires of creditors. However, you are therefore required to continue payment of yomdebts until they are squared away.

If you follow these seven laws andremain faithful in your tithing, puttingfirst the Kingdom of God, you willprosper. Will you rake God at Hisword?
