Where to Take Your Compass Reading

Choosing a Good Compass:

There are many good compasses but the one you choose should indicateevery degree on the compass. There are some that have markings for onlyevery 5 degrees but these are not exact enough for Feng Shui use.

I use both a professional Chinese Luopan Compass and a regular compassto back up my accuracy.

My compass is a Suunto KB-20 Vista Compass. I love it because it isvery accurate and has a built in viewfinder that tells me if I'm holding mycompass straight. The best prices for this compass I've found are online atwww.amazon.com.

There are 2 Basic Terms You Need to Know:

1. Sitting Direction – This is normally the center of the back of the house.

2. Facing Direction - This is normally the center of the front of the house.

Parallel to the Facing direction is where your primary compassreading will be taken but you can also take comparative readings parallelto the Sitting direction of the house and at the sides as well for accuracy.

Do not estimate or use a street map or the North indicator arrow thatis placed on a blueprint to determine the direction your house facesbecause these are oriented at an adjusted "True North."

For Feng Shui purposes we are using "Magnetic North" because FengShui is an earth science and magnetic north shows us the magneticenergies of the land we are standing on.

There may be a few instances where you aren't quite sure about what theSitting and Facing direction for your home is:

• Don't be confused if a front door is not located in the center front ofthe house. Sometimes front doors are positioned at the side of the house butthe Facing direction is still normally the center front of the building.

• An exception to the norm would be if the house were deriving a greatdeal more light and/or fresh air from an exceptional view at the back,such as an ocean view, with the living room also situated at the back. In thisatypical case the back of the property would be considered the Facing direction.

• If you live in an apartment or condo building the position of yourindividual unit may not have the same Sitting and Facing direction asthat of the whole building. In this case you will use your individual unit'sSitting and Facing direction.

Compass Reading Tips:

A. It's always best if possible to take a compass reading outsidebecause it's usually less cluttered with electro-magnetic fields thatcould potentially distort your reading. You may have to stand acrossthe street or in the middle of the street at times to accomplish this.

B. Once you've determined your house's Sitting and Facing direction look around to make sure you are away from any electrical transformers and from metal objects such as cars, or metal fences. Remove your metal jewelry and belt buckles because the presence of metal can skew your compass reading.

C.

With compass in hand, adjust your body so that you are standing parallel to the building on an even flat surface at the Facing direction. Make sure you aren't standing at a slight angle but are rather facing straight ahead, with your back to the house facing the street.

divided into 3 sectors i.e. South 1, South 2, South3.

Match your Compass Reading with its Sitting and Facing Direction

Example:If the "Facing" of your house were at 92 degrees it would be facing the East 2 sector in the Mao (Rabbit) Mountain.

It would be "Sitting" (at the opposite of the "Facing") at 272 degrees in the West 2 sector in the You (Rooster) Mountain.
