HOW TO EDIT

RecordingThisis the ideal set-up for recording with our microphone. Make sure the top

switch is at the pacmansetting. (Sometimes we change that to O to record people

surrounding the mic when freestyling.)

Vocal Quality

First, we need to clean up EVERY vocal file. Thisis the most important

step and the procedure varies a lot. Well discuss the must dos

Heres Track2(verse1)

PressF11. Change it from Mono to Stereo

Now a bass cut. Zoom all the way out, highlight the entire vocal and

Effects > Filters > Graphic Equalizer

Choose the preset Simple Bass Cut and click OK.

The next step is compression. This will even out the volume and make the voice sound

crisp. We do this with a VST plug-in I paid for,sike!

With the entire vocal wave still highlighted

Effects > VST > C3 Multi Band Compressor

The Preset High Bypass is your best friend, but you should always preview

several before making yourselection.

This application will set the overall tone of the voice so choose wisely. Fuckit,

pick high bypass.

There we go. Now your vocal has goodquality (for the most part) go do this to

EVERY VOCAL FILE!!

Unless youre looking at some shit like this! (Vocal from save the game)

After compression,if you find yourself with a waveform that has a loud consistent

buzzin the background, thats bad The microphone most likely wasnot in the pacman

setting when recording ORthe plug for the microphone wasin a bad angle. Itsstupid.

Noise Reduction (ifnecessary)

Highlight the buzz, then

Effects > Noise Reduction > Capture Noise Reduction Profile

Now highlight the whole thing and

Effects > Noise Reduction > Noise Reduction

Preview how it sounds as you slide the Noise Reduction Level to anideal strength.The higher the setting, the more aggressive the removal will be.

Unfortunately,noise reduction comes with a price. The vocal will be stripped as

you remove the static in the background.

Try to avoid using any noise reduction. Rerecording is always an option.

Cropping

Now we need to cut out all the nonsense from the takes. Crap before the

verse, after the verse, crap in between adlibs, and everything else that isnt

intended to be heard.

This can be accomplishedin both Edit and Multi-track view. Youre going

to need to learn both!! The Edit view works well for verses. The Multi-track view

is helpful for adlibs,intros, and any other vocal layer with gaps betweenspeaking.

In edit view of a verse

Highlight the crap.

And press Delete!

Now zoom in and highlight everything up to the first audible word.

Favorites > Fade In

Do this at the end of the vocal as well!! Delete the crap then use the Fade Out!

Do this to every vocal layer except adlibs. If there is talking before a verse that you want

to keep,do the Fade In before the talking.

Now yoursessionshould look like this

The five verse vocals and two chorus vocals are strictly voice now. Woopdi-doo.

Main vocal vs. back-up vocalsWhen recording, the artist should always record multiple layers. (Three

should be the minimum imo.)

Determine which acapella is the best take. This will be the louder main

vocal. The other(s) will be lowered andslightly panned to the left or right.

Back-up vocal developmentAfterdetermining which acapella will be used as back-up...

Mute everything except the layers of vocal and the beat. Also,slide the individual

track volumes back to the original zero setting.

Now zoom into the beginning of the first verse

^The back-up vocal is a tad late anddoesnot sync together with the main vocal

properly. Thisis a common problem which will require you to manipulate the timing and

sound of vocals as often as every 0.5 seconds of the track!

Luckily, you canslide around any waveform while in the multi-track view by

simply right clicking (and holding down) on the mouse.

So letsslide the back-up vocal to the left until its waves overlap the main vocal

Now move on, check to see the timing of the rest of the verse

4 seconds later, we see this

The back-up vocal has a word that wassaidshorter thanin the main vocal. This

shorterduration throws off the rest of the sentence.

Lengthening andshortening wordsisimportant whendeveloping a good back-up

vocal. We need them to be asidentical to the main vocal as possible.

Highlight anddelete a tiny portion at the center of the short waveform ONLY! Do

NOT make any changes to the main vocal. (Zoom inifnecessary)

This allows the waveform to be separatedinto two individual tracks. The back-up

vocal isnow two independent waves. One ends at 7.115 seconds and the other begins at

7.115 seconds.

We now have the ability to slide the back-up vocal without affecting its placement

prior to 7.115 seconds.

Now that the word begins and ends where it should, we need to fix the gap.

Click on the back-up vocal. Place your mouse at the end or beginning of the gap and the

pointershould turninto this. Now click anddrag left or right until the two back-up

vocal tracks over lap.

Now move your mouse to the top of the track until your pointer turnsinto a hand with a

plussign. Clicknear where the two vocals meet. A white square should appear.

White squares at the top of tracks are another form of volume control.

Click the white square at the top right corner of the track anddrag it to the bottom.

Now do the same to the other part of the back-up vocal.

Now that one short wordis two short words that fade into each other!
