Run your own Facebook page

A few years ago, I'd have suggested running your own blog. Whilst you can still do that, sites like Facebook have made it easy to create pages and - probably more important - easy to get people to visit those pages.

Creating a page on Facebook is quick to do. There are full instructions on their site and they act very much like your own timeline does. The main difference is that they are separate, standalone, pages within Facebook and can get found in searches. If you're feeling flush and want to fast track your page, you can run highly targeted adverts within Facebook to get more likes and more people reading your content.

Once you've got the page set up, you can promote whatever you like on it. It's best to use a mix of things that are in tune with the theme of your page and aren't constantly advertising things. You'll work out your own mix of editorial, advertising and advertorial over time.

Advertorials are actually a very nice way of mixing real content with advertising that pays you. They're used in newspapers and magazines all the time and are so easy to mistake for regular editorial content that they are required to put a reminder on every advertorial page that it really is an advert. There are currently no similar restrictions on the web although the FTC do require that you draw people's attention to the fact that you may get paid commission.

Over time, you'll build up likes on Facebook and your posts will show up in people's feeds. Since Facebook is primarily a medium that you skim, keep the main information that you want to convey in the first few lines of each post together with something intriguing that encourages people click the "more" link. Pictures and videos also help to draw people's attention to your posts and the more clicks you get from inside people's newsfeeds, the more Facebook will reward you by showing your posts more often.

Put videos on YouTube

Videos are easy to make and don't have to be television or Hollywood quality. In fact, it's often better that you come across as just an ordinary person.

You can make videos using your mobile phone: the quality is more than good enough, even on the cheapest devices. It's then a fairly simple exercise to upload the video from your phone and post it on YouTube. There are apps that will help you with the process and make sure that you do it correctly.

Once your video is uploaded, you can write a title (headline) for it, add in some tags and write a description that complements what you've said in the video. You can include links in the description part - these can lead anywhere you choose but I'd suggest that they point to your Facebook page or website and then that you use that to point people to products that pay you commission. It's slightly longer winded than pointing people directly to a product but it keeps things looking more natural which will help you in the longer run.

YouTube also offer a share of advertising revenues from the ads that show up before your video starts playing or whilst it's in progress. You need to verify your YouTube account and follow the instructions that they give you. Sometimes you may need to build up a following on YouTube before they make the advertising revenue share option available to you but it's worth waiting for as it's one of the most passive ways that you can earn money from videos.

Sell things online

Gone are the days when you needed to clear your front yard and have a garage sale. Now you can put your spare items on sites like eBay and Amazon and let them help you advertise the items.

If you want to sell brand new items on those sites, there are people who make a living exploiting the difference between the prices on the two sites. Although it's against Amazon's terms and conditions, there are people who subscribe to their Prime service and take advantage of the free postage included to send items direct to buyers from eBay. Obviously that option is something for your own conscience to decide but it's certainly being done by some eBay sellers.

Other people are taking advantage of the differential between prices in different countries: for example, they buy from Amazon's USA site and sell the item on Amazon's UK site or vice versa if the price differential is in the opposite direction. This has the advantage that you don't need to carry stock - you just act as the middleman between buyers and sellers.

Another option with eBay is to buy items from thrift and charity shops and re-sell them. If you choose this option, it helps to be knowledgeable about your subject area so that you know what's likely to sell and how much margin you are likely to get between the price you pay and the price you are likely to get. There is slightly more risk in this approach as you have to buy the stock initially and you may not sell it or may not get the price you anticipated. This approach is closer to a regular retailer as they have to cope with items that don't sell and either mark them down or write them off.

Freelance writing

The internet thrives on written content and, in turn, there's a thriving market for people who are able to put their words into text files and other documents. There are a number of sites that act to introduce writers to people who want content written for them. These sites handle all the behind the scenes technicalities, allowing you to write and get paid.

One of the most popular of these sites is iWriter. They have a review and rating system similar to eBay and they make sure that you get paid for your work providing it's of an acceptable quality to the person requesting it. You get to choose the topics you want to write on and then you simply accept the article and start writing. There's no bidding process or any other uncertainty. Once your article is completed and accepted, the money gets transferred into your account on the site.

When you first start on freelance writing sites, the price you get paid per article is relatively low but as you get more reviews and higher ratings you can earn some very good sums for your writing.

Recommend products in return for a commission

Retail shops get paid every time someone buys an item from them - it's called their profit margin. But there are opportunities for all of us to take a small profit by recommending items to friends and people we've met online.

You could do this work in the same way as selling on Amazon and eBay. Or you could join a company that rewards you for introducing customers.

If you've ever been to a Tupperware party or bought any Avon products then you've already experienced this kind of selling. Sometimes it's done via parties held in people's houses, other times it's simple word of mouth once you've started using a product and can't help yourself talking about it to other people.

You need to do some due diligence if you choose this route for your part time money from home. Whilst most companies that operate this way are reliable, you need to check their track record. It pays to spend a few minutes research checking that your chosen company has been established for a number of years and has a history of paying out their commissions.

One such company can be found here. They have a wide range of products in areas such as personal health and wellbeing plus things such as cleaning products and items aimed at helping you to get your weight back under control. They also offer lots of support to help you grow from being someone who has never run their own business to someone who is confidently earning a nice part time income from home whilst setting their own hours.
