MEDIASocial Media• People “Like” projections: Facebook it, Tweet it, Slashdot it, email
blast it, blog about it, put it on the front page of website
Mainstream Media:• Always make HD footage & high-resolution photos available• Have a Youtube or Vimeo video within 3-4 hrs• It gets dark before the 10:00 news. So think about your news cycle
THE LAWQ: Are projection actions against the law?
A: In New York we have 4 things to be worried about:
1. Tenant Quiet Enjoyment Rights.Do not project into people’s windows. Don’t disturb residents
2. TrespassingYou can be charged with trespassing if you are projecting from
private or city-owned property
3. Obstructing Traffic Don’t cause cars to stop and stall. Keep this in mind when
projecting near highways
4. Signage LawsAdvertising signs are permitted in most commercial and manufacturing zoning districts. Most aren't permitted in residential districts
FOOD FOR THOUGHT• Because activists have brought projections into
the mainstream, advertisers are using them too
• All you're doing is shining light. And there are no specifically explicit laws against that.
• Legal issues usually arise when lasers are involved or activists are trespassing.
• This is not a legal guide. Please consult a lawyer in your state for legal advice.
SCOUT TARGETYour Enemy: • Ambient light from street lights and decorative lights • Windows, light goes right through them• Dynamic surfaces with too much detail
Your Friend:• Flat white surfaces (tile, stone, etc.)• Detail free walls
• Remember to look for spaces to project fromGreat projections have been done from hotel rooms, apartments, and of course from street level
• Remember to scout at night time• Remember to look for alternative targets nearby
CHOOSE PROJECTOR
Projector Brightness:• 1500 Lumens = about ¼ block or 2 lanes of traffic• Distance = Larger image & less brightness • Minimum brightness for good actions: 3,000-4,000 lumens.
DESIGN CONTENTFit Images to TargetSmall to small, big to big, thin to thin, vertical to vertical, etc.
Photos: High contrast and high resolution.
Video: Brightness is main factor. Set media player to loop.
Text: White background for black text and vice versa.
Ugly: Don’t show computer desktop or a program’s logo.
Cool Applications for Projecting Images• Graffiti Research Lab Projection App: Allows quick image resizing/ cycling• NotePad SX: Allows full screen text editor
Computer to Projector • Laptop or mini DVD player
Many newer projectors have inputs for the iPhone and other smart phones. Projecting from your phone will significantly lighten your load.
• VGA/DVI cableDon’t forget adapters
• Digital Projector
Power Projector• Option 1: Just plug it in. Never plug directly into a
wall outlet, use a power strip.
• Option 2: Rent a portable generator.
• Option 3: Use a car battery and AC/DC power inverter (An 800 watt inverter is good for 4,500 lumen projector)
