How To Delegate

1
If you have attended a leadership training program, you will have heard it said that leaders need to shift focus from attending to every day “emergencies” and free up time for them to lead more effectively. What this means is that you need to reduce the number of tasks you handle by delegating them to someone else. Having to let go of tasks can be difficult because there are so many thoughts and fears that crop up – whom to delegate to, will they be able to do it right away or do they need leadership training to prepare, will you lose control over the team…the list is a long one. However, this process is an easier one if you go about it in a systematic way, by asking yourself the right questions and using the answers you get to make the decision. Here are a few of those questions you should ask about each aspect of the work you do. Is this a task that only I am supposed to do or is it okay to let someone else do it? Is this a task that only I can do or can anybody else handle it? Is this task taking up too much of valuable time that I actually need to use to communicate, coach and develop my team or help them with leadership training? Am I doing this because I like doing it and do not want to give it up? Am I sticking on with this task because it feels comfortable and I’m used to doing it? Do I do this job because I can do it so well and I get praised for it and I do not want to give up that good feeling? Am I hanging on to this task although I do not want to do it because I think no one else will want to? Is the fear of breaking tradition making me hang on to a task that can be delegated to a junior member of the team? Is it possible for someone else to do this task? Will they need leadership training to be able to do it? Once you are through with answering these questions, you may find that something you thought impossible was nothing but a wrong impression you had nurtured over time. When you delegate responsibilities to employees, you are in a way making them a part of a hands-on leadership training exercise that will help them develop and grow. www.executivecoachingindia.com Coaching & Mentoring Coach Training Leadership Training Soft Skills Training Team Building HR and Business Programs Workshop Facilitation Psychometrics Authored By Akash Chander, Principal Coach © The Orange Academy 2012 The Orange Academy provides coaching & mentoring services; and leadership training & development services.
