How I Manage My
Time
Time Management For Authors
I wrote 210,232 x 1st draft words between 11th May 2016 and September 16th 2016
I will have written 3 x 90k word thrillers in a 6 month period
I will have written 9 x fiction books and 7 x non-fiction books between April 2014 and
end October 2016
I also have a ‘day job’ and a family … we all have the same ‘life stuff’ going on, it’s simply
a matter of organisation!
Time Management For Authors
I set Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4targets on a white board
and move those to a weekly planner
I use a weekly planning template to transfer priorities from my
quarterly planning board
Time Management For Authors
I colour code activities for ‘at-a-glance’ clarity – it allows me to see the
shape of a week.
I prioritise writing to make sure that I get my words & editing done

Where can you find blocks of time in your day?
Time Management For Authors
1 hour of TV time
Get up 1 hour
earlier
Go to bed an hour laterDo ‘homework’ with your kids
Time Management For Authors
Know your writing timings …
I can write 1500 words in 1 hour
I can write 2000 words in 90 minutes
I write in blocks of 1 hour + 1 hour + 1.5 hours = 5k words per day
I write when my wife is out of the house (10am-2pm)
I now know exactly how many hours/days/months it will take to write a book

The 80/20 Rule is one of the most helpful of all concepts of time and life management. It is also called the Pareto Principle after its founder, the Italian
economist Vilfredo Pareto, who first wrote about it in 1895. [Source: BrianTracy.com]
