Fun with Facebook Audiences

Let me show you how to create and save a custom audience in

Facebook.

This will make it easier for you to target people

in your boosts and in your ads on the

fly….The right people.

First things first. You will need to head on over to your Ads Manager and click on “Tools” and now click on “Audiences”

From here you will want to click on “Create Audience”

(That’s right I am targeting you ReMax of Southern California)

There are 3 ways to play…

.

1. Custom Audience

Customer list: Upload your email list and target those folks. Pretty cool for branding purposes. Great for touching your audience on different platforms.

Website Traffic: Install a pixel on your website or a specific page and target those folks. Otherwise known as a retargeting ad. Very powerful type of advertising.

App Activity: If you have an app or a game you can target your users.

2. Lookalike Audience

Already have a great target audience but you want more people like that? Use this option to create a look alike audience you can target and convert into YOUR audience. (And no you cannot do look alike for pages you do not have admin rights too).

3. Saved Audience

This is the one I will walk you through as it is the most helpful in terms of running targeted boosted and regular ads on the fly. Plus I can show you all the groovy ways you can target your ideal customers.

Be warned this stuff is SO FREAKING COOL for marketers but kind of freaky for Facebook users if you think about it…But hey, I am a marketer so I think it is just FREAKING COOL.

Lets get started…

Step 1: Name your audience something you will remember so when you go to select the audience for an ad you know what you are targeting. Make it easy on yourself.

Step 2: you need to put in some kind of location. I mean you can’t possibly want to target the WORLD. At least I would not recommend that. Let’s get HYPER local.

Have several cities or zip codes you want to target? Use the add bulk locations. Cut and paste and go!

Now the fun begins… Step 3: There are a ridiculous amount of ways you can target people by demographic, behaviors and interest. For example you can see I am targeting people who are likely to move.

Here is an important point I want to make. If you add more targeting options in this first box you are saying you want to target this OR that not AND that. SO if you want to target This AND That you will want to further your targeting… Next slide to see this for yourself.

This OR That vs. This AND That Targeting

Example: This OR That Targeting people who are likely to move OR Renters

Example: This AND That Targeting people who are likely to move and they are Renters

You can also exclude people from your audience. Here I am targeting people who are likely to move but excluding people interested in Cats because I am allergic, so there!

The things you can target are VAST so I would suggest you spend a little time in this feature and see what you can see. But to get you started here are a couple of the big ones:

Demographics:

Interest:

Behaviors:

If you are a non profit you should look into this one under Behaviors…

You can also target people who like your business page and their friends. And no, you cannot target people who like pages you are not an admin of…

You can also exclude your Facebook Business Page fans.

Once you are satisfied save your audience. Now when you go to do ads or boost a post on your page you can use this audience…
