When changing your oil, having a warm engine is preferable. A warm engine means warm oil which will run out smoother, easier and quicker. However, you don’t want the temperature to be too hot, as it could potentially burn you if it makes contact with your skin.

Step 2 – Make sure Engine is warm

Step 3 – Use Socket Wrench to remove Drain plug

Make sure that a drain pan is in place, and using a socket wrench loosen the bolt holding the plug in place. After the bolt is loose, you should be able to remove it, using a rag, simply by turning it with your hand. Then continue allowing the oil to drain.

Step 4 – Remove FilterThis is where things can get tricky. Filters are not necessarily located in a standard position on all vehicles. Once you locate the filter assembly, twist counter-clockwise to remove it. Make sure to drain the oil from inside the filter, and set it aside in a rag or paper towels.

Step 5 – Replace FilterOpen a bottle of new oil with your finger and dab the new filter with it in order to moisten the gasket. With your hands, replace the filter with the new one being careful not to cross threads. Turn it until it seals, and then give it one more half turn.

Step 6 – Replace Drain PlugAgain, be careful not to cross threads when replacing this. First, wipe the area surrounding where the plug will go. If your plug uses a gasket, be sure it is replaced and tightened until secure and snug. However, there is no reason to over-tighten it.

Step 9 – Test DriveAfter you’ve checked everything out, take the car for a spin around the block once or twice and make sure everything seems to be working properly. Once back home, wait for fifteen minutes, then check underneath the car again and the oil levels using the dipstick. If everything checks out, you’re good to go!
