Respect is important in any learning community. Online communities are

no exception. Perhaps even more attention should be paid to respect in an online community, because words

that are intentionally typed and shared cannot be undone or unshared.

…teens overwhelmingly chose negative adjectives to describe how people act online. Words that appeared frequently included “rude,” “mean,” “fake,” “crude,” “over-dramatic,” and “disrespectful.”

Technology itself does not make material engaging or assignments interesting. Students thrive when

they are given access to content information in multiple ways and when they can convey their

understanding in a variety of ways.

Among the more positive impacts they see: the best students access a greater depth and breadth of information on topics that interest them; students can take advantage of the availability of educational material in engaging multimedia formats; and many become more self-reliant researchers.

One of the most striking differences between the online classroom and the walls-and-windows

classroom is the ease of collaboration. Students who do their work in a digital community can share,

partner, and build their work with other students easily, and the communication between teacher and

student can also become a collaboration based on student work, student goals, and student strengths.

We’re looking for ways technology can bring people together to make a difference in communities, through developing deeper neighbor-to-neighbor connections, fostering collective dialogue or making it easier for residents and leaders to co-create solutions. These shifts are fundamental to the more meaningful involvement that leads to consensus building and the types of solutions that can transform communities.
